More details are emerging about the Glee Cory Monteith tribute episode titled “The Quarterback” Doesn’t that title alone make you want to cry? Cory, as one of the older and wiser actors in the group, was a quarterback of sorts, just like Finn, the character he played.
E Online reports that Amber Riley (Mercedes), Harry Shum Jr. (Mike), Mark Salling (Puck) and Jayma Mays (Emma) are among the former regular cast members who will appear in the episode, the 3rd of season 5, set to air on October 11.
Mike O’Malley (Burt) and Romy Rosemont (Finn’s mother, Carole) will also appear in what’s being described as a “gut wrenching” episode.
Dianna Agron (Quinn) and Heather Morris (Brittany) aren’t in the script and are not expected to appear.
Cory’s real life girlfriend, Lea Michele will appear, but not until the final act. She is expected to sing. Naya Rivera (Santana) has a “great and memorable part in the episode,” according to sources.
So far, we’ve got ONE song spoiler, “Seasons of Love,” from the Broadway musical, Rent. The episode will open with the news of Finn’s death. The cause will NOT be revealed. Characters will mourn the passing of their friend, but also remember and celebrate him.
It goes without saying that filming the tribute will be hard on the actors who worked with Cory over the past 4 or 5 years. Some have shared their thoughts with reporters at recent red carpet events.
“It’s terrible,” Naya Rivera told Us at the MTV Video Music awards, of the mood on the Glee set.
“It’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to me,” she told E News. It’s the hardest thing to do. It’s been the worst week ever.”
Shooting the episode has been “horrible” but it’s helped the actress mourn and cope with Cory’s death.
It’s incredibly hard,” Matthew Morrison (Will) told E News at Comedy Central’s James Franco roast. “We’ve mourned Cory, but now we’re mourning Finn. So it’s kind of like two people in that one person.”
“It’s incredibly hard and we’re staying strong together and I have to say Lea [Michele] has been the most strongest of all of us,” he added.
“We’re shooting it right now. It’s tough to shoot,” Darren Criss also told E News at the VMAs. “It’s something that needs to happen for the fans. I don’t know; it’s going to be tough. But it will be very poignant and hopefully very moving, and just that: a tribute. Hopefully it will be a good tribute to Cory.”
