David Cook’s ‘Heroes’ Used for Bode Miller Montage

NBC used David Cook’s “Heroes” as a backdrop for a montage featuring Olympic skier, Bode Miller. Check it out above.

  1. Hoo to the Ray! He sounded so stoked in his tweet last night (though he actually missed the broadcast because he was working).

  2. That’s awesome! A Cookie song on national TV again — so cool. “Heroes” is perfect for that montage. Happy for David who deserves this and more.

  3. I can’t even imagine how proud he had to feel watching that. TOML being part of the Olympics was pretty special but this was a song he wrote, that must be quite an honor to have one of your songs used on such a huge platform. Between his tweet about it and Claude Kelly’s (always!) infectious tweets about being in the studio with him..last night rocked!

  4. A new thread for us to haunt for days. LOL The MWK thread can die now. I love how we.never.leave a thread. Sadly I missed this, and I have no excuses. (So glad NBC didn’t choose the magic rainbow)

  5. Bad David Cook fan here, but I can’t remember, will the US ice dancing pair Davis & White be performing to DC’s “Billie Jean” tonight in the free program, or was that from a “demonstration” performance? I hate to be greedy, but I am, and I need to have my bubble burst quickly, so I don’t get disappointed tonight. ;-)

ETA: Never mind, I answered my own question. “Billie Jean” was an “exhibition” skate. I wonder if Davis-White win a medal, if we’ll see it performed after the competition is over? I seem to recall at past Olympics, they had all the medal winners skate in an evening of exhibition peformances.

  6. bootstar, the free skate will be the “Phantom of the Opera” performance (it does include “Music of the Night”…Michael Crawford’s original though, not DC’s). BUT if they medal they will skate in the exhibition show towards the end of the Olympics, and THEN they’ll do “Billie Jean.”

  7. ^ I think if they medal that Billie Jean will be used for the skating exhibition on Saturday. I believe all of the medal winners get to skate an encore performance and it’s a little more liberal and fun.

I got to see that montage last night. I might have gotten a little verklempt. Just a little.

  8. I said before Come Back To Me was released that Heroes should be the single, and I still think that it should have been the one instead of Come Back To Me. I think that song works well in an anthemic kind of way, a switch of tempo from Light On, can appeal to a different demographic, and would have done better than Come Back To Me. Anyway, it’s all ancient history now, too late to do anything, on to the next album.

  9. Great exposure for Heroes :) This being the 2nd time that one of David’s songs gets featured in a major network Olympic Coverage shows how meaningful David Cook’s music really is. :D We’ll probably have to thank RCA too as they probably had a hand in this.

“Not gonna come down, down off of these clouds,
All these heroes come and go, You’re still standing!”

  10. That’s wonderful for Cook – I just love him! Wonderful gold for Bode Miller too:)

  11. Hooray for Cookie! Finally a reason to stay up til midnight watching Olympics coverage for events that happened hours prior to NBC airing them. I love when Cookie’s music collides with his passion for sports. He’s still livin’ the dream. So fun to be a fan. Is it summer yet?

  12. Oh, boy, too bad we can’t phone in our votes for Davis & White. The Canadian couple (Virtue & Moer) and they are my absolute favorites (apart from their use of BJ), and I would also love if our local heroes, Belbin & Agosto, medaled too.

Speaking of the Olympics and ice dancing, there’s a great story in the New York Times today about NBC’s “kiss-and-cry area.” I just LOLed at this quote from Evan Lysacek’s coach, Frank Caroll. Evan and DC could be BFFs!

The raw emotion of the kiss-and-cry scene has become so compelling that it commands a level of stagecraft rarely seen off the field of play. Last week, viewers had a front seat for Evan Lysacek’s sob session after the men’s short program, in which he skated cleanly to set up his gold medal performance two days later.

“I kept wanting to say, ‘Stop it, just stop it,’ ” his coach, Frank Carroll, said. “I’m very stoic in a way, very disciplined, and I think, when the ski jumpers, when they win, they don’t start to cry. Let’s put it this way: I don’t like figure skaters to cry.”

After Skating, a Unique Olympic Event: Crying

If you’ve watched much Olympic coverage over the years, you’ll know where the American Idol producers found their “inspiration” for all the sob stories they do on contestants.

  13. That’s so cool. I was just saying to someone the other day, they should use Heroes in the Olympics. This makes my day.

  14. Congratulations to Cookie on Heroes. I am so proud they used a song of his that he had written. I think that Davis and White will still skate an exibition even if they don’t win and then we should hear “Billie Jean”. Keeping fingers crossed….

  15. Sorry about the misspelling. I put the post up super-fast because I was beginning to get some flak on twitter.

  16. Sorry about the misspelling. I put the post up super-fast because I was beginning to get some flak on twitter.

Flak on Twitter? Oh lord. LOL

IIRC, Cherry Lane Publishing is responsible for licensing David’s music to other outlets. Watching twitter explode with fans racing to be the first to post the vid after David requested it was beyond amusing. That boy has a special grip on his fandom for sure. So exited about the tweets by Claude kelly and Matt Squire. Can’t wait for new music. Woot, Woot

Thanks MJ for posting Cook news despite a few inpatient twitternuts. Every fandom has ’em, right?

  18. Sorry about the misspelling. I put the post up super-fast because I was beginning to get some flak on twitter.

No apologies necessary, MJ. You rock! I knew you’d get it up eventually, but twitter is the devil, so I’m sure you were feeling the pressure!

  19. Flak on Twitter? Oh lord. LOL

That’s more polite than how I’d say it. Thanks for getting it up, MJ.

IIRC, Cherry Lane Publishing is responsible for licensing David’s music to other outlets.

I believe this is correct, although I don’t think he had the CL deal when they licensed Heroes to the ACC/SEC tourneys. Still, the Olympics is a different breed, and it’s certainly better to have an organization like CL on board.

  20. Congratulations David Cook! That is awesome. He sounded so excited on Twitter, too.

    Congrats to Bode Miller, too.

What a great montage NBC did, too. Very nicely done.

So ToML used in 2008 Olympics, and now Heroes in 2010 Olympics. Perfect progression, too.

  21. David Cook + sports = wonderful
It is so much fun to sing along to “Heroes” live at a Cookie concert. Here’s hoping we see ice dancing to “Billie Jean” on Saturday.

    Oh! You’re right. :)

Thanks MJ for posting Cook news despite a few inpatient twitternuts. Every fandom has ‘em, right?

    Yeah, thanks mj. :)

  23. Heroes is such the perfect sports song. And I dare say it has now out montaged even the Magic Rainbow, having been used for the NCAA Basketball tourney, NCAA Football championship bowl season, the MBA All Star Game, an Olympic Gymnastics/Skating exhibition, and now the freakin’ Olympics. It was so ideal for Bode’s redemption story too. Couldn’t have been more perfect.

  24. I’m gonna also post to say thanks, MJ. Don’t judge us all by a few impatient people please.

Those Claude Kelly tweets are great.

  25. This is probably old news – I don’t scour the blogs like I used to – but I heard Jason Castro’s song, Let’s Fall in Love Again on television as the background music for an Overstock.com commercial. That was a nice surprise!

  26. I love how excited David was – he’s so cute

He was, wasn’t he – asking for the video, and then posting this:

“SO cool! It’s moments like that that help vindicate the agonizing over lyrics and chord structure and melodies, etc. etc….”

His Twitter probably blew up with people telling him about the montage, congratulations….and urls. ;)

Just waiting to see how excited people get to tell him about Davis & White and the Exhibition Skate to “Billie Jean” – thinking positive – they are in position to medal, and they have an excellent program.

  27. Thanks for the thread MJ!

Dave loves sports and sports love Dave, lol. So cool for him to have a song used in the Olympics again, he really has a great voice for that sort of thing. And even better that this time it’s a song he co-wrote and that clearly means a lot to him (doesn’t he open almost every show with it?). I kind of love that it was for bad boy Bode Miller of all people.

  28. (doesn’t he open almost every show with it?).

Progression, it did open almost every show, although sometimes they played it second – and after learning that David wrote it for his family and friends, I always felt it was very special to him.
But “Heroes” claim to fame, in a manner of speaking, is that after 154 Shows in 44 states, the Philippines, and Canada, with 150 Unique set lists and 33 Total unique songs played, “Heroes” is the only song that was played at every. single. show.

  29. I almost deleted last evening’s Olympic recording from my dvr when Bob Costas signed off, but decided to stick around to watch the tribute to Bode Miller, and what a thrill it was to hear the opening strains of Heroes! It was so unexpected, just like when they used ToML for the Phelps montage in ’08. I admit, I got a little verklempt both times, lol.

We Cook fans are so lucky. Good things just keep happening for our boy, and it’s so much fun to be along for the ride! *big grin*

  30. They played “Heroes” at the beginning of the Race for Hope last year – gave me chills!

  31. Thanks for posting MJ.

See, people consider this the ultimate Idol news source, which is why they’re so overanxious to see every little tidbit about a fave posted <<flattery! (working?)

And tho I hope they will knock it off, equally hope it will not cause a begrudging of Cook news. Twitterspammers: this is why we can't have nice things!

  32. They played “Heroes” at the beginning of the Race for Hope last year – gave me chills!

I’ve always appreciated this song for what it is, but I never really liked it all that much, but everytime I hear it set to a montage, I get chills! WTF? EM:HE, College basketball, Olympics, even with the song all hacked up… it gets me. It’s just the perfect montage song. I’m not disappointed it was never a single, but I’m ecstatic that it’s gotten pretty decent exposure on TV, which is perfect for it, I think.

Okay, love to chat about DC’s hair, adorkableness, etc. etc., but I got work to do today :(. Gotta jet! Thanks for the thread MJ!

  33. This thread is only so short cause we had so much to say in the Flytrap thread. And because his hair’s looking so good.

Yeah. I left that Flytrap thread at around the 100+ mark and couldn’t believe it got over 200 comments posted. *shakes head*

Anyway, Heroes is definitely very earwormy. I stayed up last night to watch this on DVR (even though I already saw the tubey version) and was grinning from ear to ear for our boy (and Bode too, of course). So cool. It doesn’t appear to have caused any kind of bump, which makes sense because it’s not a radio single and wasn’t identified during the montage. Nonetheless, if royalties are supposed to be calculated based on the size of the audience, that’s pretty huge. Nice.

  34. Obviously a big Idol fan at NBC who’s partial to Cook and Elliott Yamin is picking the music for the Olympics. Who’s next? Daughtry, S8 guys. Now I’ll have to wait for the closing credits tonight.

  35. Very cool surprise for David. Really is a good song for sporting event stuff.

  36. It seems Cook just woke up and finally getting his day started:

@thedavidcook At it again today. workout finished, now I’m off to write some mo’! then… maybe hang with @montyanderson… maybe.

  37. MJ, in the hot pink part of your heading for your site looks like DC singing, isn’t that wishful thinking, lol. Thanks for the thread.

  38. Congrats Cookie! That’s 2 for 2 for the Olympics. Can he make it a hat trick with the next games?

Too bad they don’t show the artist’s name & song title at the end of the montage the way ESPN usually does.

  39. Thanks ladymadonna! Just noticed u listed out all the various uses of Heroes, cuz I was kinda wondering about that yesterday :)

  40. MJ, in the hot pink part of your heading for your site looks like DC singing, isn’t that wishful thinking, lol

Hee, I thought the same thing!

  41. Yay for David and Bode! Very nice~

I love that the sports world (or at least some high ranking TV sports editor :-))loves David Cook. Hee…

  42. This is very cool. I wonder how many artists have had their current music played during consecutive Olympics? Not many, I’m sure. Did he really ask the fans to find him a YouTube of it ?
    That’s adorable !

  43. I FINALLY feel well enough to get on the computer and FINALLY got to watch the video – love it. He should be very proud :) . And “Heroes” really is such a great montage song.

  44. I loved this. It was really well done the song fit the montage perfectly. Thanks for posting it MJ.

  45. The Flytrap post is up to 200+ comments? Whoa, I glanced in when it was around 50 and thought it was done. I shouldn’t have underestimated you guys. I have some catchup reading to do. : )

I posted on the Miller montage in headlines last night, but I’ll put in my 2¢ on Davis & White & Billie Jean, not least because I was actually posting about figure skating on another site when I checked twitter and boom! Montage! And then I checked here and the television and my fandoms collided and it was all very frantic there for a while. LOL

Unless Davis & White have changed their exo program, there’s no doubt we’ll get to see Billie Jean Saturday night. I can’t see D&W finishing lower than 3rd (and hopefully they’ll do a lot better than that, because they are awesome) and the Exhibition for the Olympics usually features the top 3/sometimes top 5 skaters in each discipline. So whee!

Trina:I can’t even imagine how proud he had to feel watching that. TOML being part of the Olympics was pretty special but this was a song he wrote, that must be quite an honor to have one of your songs used on such a huge platform.

Wasn’t that great? That pride came through so clearly in his tweet — I hadn’t thought of it from the angle of being a song HE wrote, but you’re right, that has to be huge.

Between his tweet about it and Claude Kelly’s (always!) infectious tweets about being in the studio with him..last night rocked!

You know, I was very unsure about the Claude Kelly collab, and the kind of music we might get still has me scratching my head, but I have become completely charmed by Mr. Kelly. Even if it’s a little bit PR (and a little bit rock and roll), he’s always SO positive about David — I vote we keep him. Heh.

  46. Saturday Night. “Billie Jean” and David Cook to be heard at the Olympics. With an extremely large viewing audience. Just sayin’.

And Big Congrats to Davis & White, on their Silver Olympic Medal. And thanks for their great taste in music. ;)

  47. Thank You for that photo link, wellhesback, those are some great photos and I love black and white photograghy.
Yes, congrats to Davis and White for silver and giving us a chance to see them skate to BJ on Saturday, and also to Virtue and Moir for their victory! How excited were they and that crowd during the Canadian National Anthem ?

  48. Psst- anyone still here ? This really belongs in the Flytrap thread, but ’tis gone to rest, so I thought I would link it here as it is David Cook. I apologize if someone already did link it but I don’t want to go back through 200+ comments! This vid of Til I’m Blue is very Dave-centric and has a great close-up of him rocking out the end of the song. I think I always over-stay my welcome here !
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYeuBZW0bgg

  49. Any Cook fans DVR the overnight Olympic coverage? At around 2AM they played Free for the gold medal ice dancers. I’d love to see it.

  50. jpfan, I’m not sure which coverage you are refering to. 2a.m. for me (pst) was a replay of last nights competition. I looked on the Youtube, but didn’t see anything else. Perhaps you are thinking of Sat. night exhibition show? That will be two-fold cool because
    1) maybe MJ will post the performance in her headlines on Sun as she did last time, and
    2) we will have another cook-related thread to mention bits from the Morango show !

  51. And Big Congrats to Davis & White, on their Silver Olympic Medal. And thanks for their great taste in music.

Haha, no kidding! I will have to tune in to watch them Saturday. Billie Jean sounds amazing over those loudspeakers ;) .

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYeuBZW0bgg

Thanks for that – whew. I like ;)

  52. Is it just me or could Joey Clement and Charlie White be brothers?

Okay, it’s just me then. But then I tend to see doppelgangers everywhere, although even the DH commented out of nowhere that Latvian speed skater Haralds Silovs bears a close resemblance to DC. His tights are aren’t green, but wow. :-)

  53. BootStar, it’s not just you, I thought the same thing about Charlie & Joey….Looking forward to Billie Jean on Saturday.

  54. Is it just me or could Joey Clement and Charlie White be brothers?

There is a similarity there. Charlie just needs to grow that hair out a bit more…

  55. I love the use of DC music, but Bar-ba-sol is more of a skiing number, particularly the way Bode Miller skis.

  56. DLPF, I definitely agree that Bar-ba-sol’s beat would go well with all the action in the montage. However, the lyrics to Heroes is very fitting especially in Bode’s case and his turn-around since the last Olympics.

Tierbee, hope you’re feeling all better.

Also looking forward to the cellcast this Saturday. That along with Billie Jean and it’s gonna be a great weekend!

  57. Also looking forward to the cellcast this Saturday. That along with Billie Jean and it’s gonna be a great weekend!

It’s a bounty of Cookie – I like. Even if I can’t do the cellcast, there should be YouTubes. I’m going through withdrawal again…

  58. Tierbee, hope you’re feeling all better.

And thank you :) . I think we’re all finally on the mend!

  59. Is it just me or could Joey Clement and Charlie White be brothers?

That’s funny, I was thinking Charlie White looked like Christopher Atkins !

  60. Thank you! I got to go to NYC for 5 days w/hubby and no kids… and got back and everyone started getting sick the next day. Doesn’t it just figure?!

BTW, if anyone is still lingering here, did ya’ll see Cookie’s tweet?

    thedavidcook

Was at @19News building today. Got to talk to @AllisonIraheta on the horn for a second. So stoked to hear “Scars” on Thur. LOVE THAT SONG

  61. and Claude Kelly tweeted that he and Dave were working again today. How would we survive lulls between shows without Twitter, and group hugs.

  62. I love that he’s on Twitter – it has definitely lessened my separation anxiety ;)
