Michael Jackson’s Mother Retains Custody of His Children

Custody of Michael Jackson’s three children has been settled.   Michael Jackson’s mother Katherine will retain custody, and Debbie Rowe will retain visitation rights to Jackson’s two elder children, who she bore: From the LA Times:

The mother of Michael Jackson will retain custody of his children, and the biological mother of the two elder children will visit and maintain her legal parental rights under an agreement reached by both sides,   The Times has learned.

Katherine Jackson, 79, the late pop icon’s mother, and Debbie Rowe, 50, who bore Jackson’s two older children, also agreed to mutually hire a child psychologist to advise them on how, when and where Rowe’s visits should take place, a knowledgeable source said.

The agreement will go before a Los Angeles judge Monday, and both sides expect the judge to approve it, the source said. Rowe did not ask for custody. ‘Debbie is really happy’ about the arrangement, said the source, refusing to be identified because the agreement has yet to be announced.

  1. This sounds like a fairly mature settlement, although I’m not quite sure of the implications of Rowe maintaining her legal parental rights. Strange situation all-around.

  2. I’d rather have seen one of Michael’s siblings get custody, because I don’t know how a 79-year old grandmother can possibly make decisions for these young children.

  3. Glad they ironed things out. This is the best possible outcome at this time. The Jackson have a large close extended family and everyone who has seen the kids say they are doing well all things considered.

because I don’t know how a 79-year old grandmother can possibly make decisions for these young children.

While I understand the concern. Things like this happen all the time. Young parents dies, leaving elderly grandparents to raise their kids. Katherine is not senile, just old, and fully capable of making decisions. I am sure they are making plans for the future if Katherine is incapacitated or dies before the children are adults.

  4. Correct me if I am wrong (the attorneys we have out there) but unless someone contests the validity of the will granting custody to Katherine the court isn’t go to become involved in the arrangements unless an “interested” party steps up and says that Katherine is an unfit custodian.

If Debbie has backed herself out of the process (money, again?) then the family can decide amongst themselves who will raise the children in the event of the passing of Katherine. With so much attention being focused on these innocent kids I am hoping (and it seems so) that the “sisters” have reached agreements among themselves on what may happen at that time.

I do have to say that from all accounts the younger generation of the Jacksons – Prince, Paris, and Blanket’s cousins- are all doing really well and are leading seemingly “normal” lives. Many are college graduations, some are in the entertainment field, but I haven’t heard or read that ANY have stepped out of bounds or have conducted themselves innapropriately. I think that says a lot about the family that will surround MJ’s children.

  5. As long as Joe is not in the picture… and wasn’t he talking about he and Katherine raising the kids together? But hopefully he won’t be involved.

Yeah, I’m not too sure about the implications of that as well. But I would guess if Joe wanted to make Michael’s kids into the next Jackson 5 (Jackson 3 I’ve heard discussed), Debbie would have the legal rights to put the cabosh on that.

I think this agreement sounds like a very mature way of handling a difficult situation. I would expect this agreement includes some provisions on who gets the children in case of Katherine’s death.

  8. How is news about Michael Jackson’s kids related to American Idol?

Same way SYTYCD is connected, which is to say, not very.

But his death had an effect on nearly everyone in some way, his sales and chart rankings are affecting the entire industry right now including former Idols, and we heard from the Idols about how MJ influenced them and how the news of his death came to them.

Everything is connected in some way. Just ask Kevin Bacon.

Not to mention, this blog belongs to “MJ” so there’s a connection right there. :-)

Hope this helps answer your question. LOL

  9. “I’d rather have seen one of Michael’s siblings get custody, because I don’t know how a 79-year old grandmother can possibly make decisions for these young children.”

My thoughts exactly. A 79 year old woman is going to take on three kids, two of which are about to enter those infamous rebellious teenaged years. This is without mentioning Katherine’s rumored health problems. It’s not an easy task and I hope Janet is actively involved in their lives.

I think the kids will be fine though. My concern is such a heavy load being put on an elderly woman.

  10. Correct me if I am wrong (the attorneys we have out there) but unless someone contests the validity of the will granting custody to Katherine the court isn’t go to become involved in the arrangements unless an ‘interested’ party steps up and says that Katherine is an unfit custodian.

Thats correct. I always thought the media blew this situation out of proportion by always reporting that a custody battle was “brewing”. I never thought Debbie Rowe was going to contest Michael’s will, and since she hasn’t been in those kids lives, I think this is the best outcome for all involved. Maybe through time she will get to know her kids now that they are almost teenagers.

  11. How is news about Michael Jackson’s kids related to American Idol?

Season 8 had a Michael Jackson week.

David Cook, Season 7 winner, may have won due to his performance of an MJ song, Billie Jean.

Michael Jackson was the King of Pop. Kids on AI sing pop songs.

    There’s more but I’ll stop there. : )

  12. This is the best decision to be made for the children. I am sure Janet, Rebbie, and LaToya will be there as well as a variety of the brothers who have children around the same ages. Katherine will have plenty of help in that department.

As far as financial decisions? I just don’t know.

What’s this, that Joe says Michael has a biological child in his 20s?

  13. I’m very impressed that they came to such a mature agreement. I was nervous about Debbie’s intentions, but I’m really happy to see she stepped up to the plate and did what was best for her kids. Better yet, a money exchange alledgedly wasn’t discussed. I think they both did the best they could with what each had to offer. So long as Joe is kept FAR away, I’m happy.

I agree that Rebbie and Janet especially will have a very big role in raising the kids. (I’m not so sure I trust LaToya). Katherine won’t be on her own. It’s so sad all around. Still hard to believe he’s gone…. They seem like beautiful, well adjusted kids. Though losing their father is, of course, a tremendous tragedy for them, I think they’ll do fine given how he raised them.

  14. Katherine says ‘Michael’s kids love ‘Grandpa Joe.’ Perhaps there are things that we here just don’t know.

I think that comment is just more spin from the Jackson’s. They like to pretend everything is A-OK in the family unit when it never has been.

I have yet to see a comment from Joe in a video or in print that genuinely expresses his sadness that his son has passed. It just further confirms for me that Michael was nothing more than a meal ticket for him. The fact that Michael detested his father, still froze at the sight of him and didn’t want him near his children tells me that Michael had valid reasons to leave him out of the will and treat him like he didn’t exist. I’ll be very disappointed if Katherine doesn’t abide by her son’s wishes. I think this was Debbie’s concern as well.

What’s this, that Joe says Michael has a biological child in his 20s?

I don’t believe this latest rumor to be true…for so many reasons. Knowing what we know about Michael, I can’t see him having a one-night stand with a fan. Also knowing how much Michael loved kids, why hide his biological child? Besides the obvious…the kid doesn’t resemble pre-surgery Michael at all. We’re going to see all sorts of cling ons come out of the wood work over the nextwhile. People who were too ashamed to be at Michael’s side during his down time are now scurrying to talk about their “close” relationship with him now that he’s passed.
