Paula Abdul – Still Working Out the Details of Her Return to Idol

With Kara DioGuardi’s   new Idol contract just about a done deal, she’s all set to to join the judges’ panel for American Idol Season 9.

But, where does that leave Paula Abdul?   The judges’ round auditions begin in less than two weeks and still no word of a new contract for Paula.

She’s been quiet lately, but she emerged today, via twitter, to let her fans know that she and her team are still trying to hammer out a deal:

@PaulaAbdul: Hi everyone. I’ve been quiet as we are trying to work out details of how I can return to #Idol.

Will Paula return to Idol? I think she will. She’ll compromise on her salary demands while still getting a nice raise. The 4-judge panel will return…

UPDATE: More Paula tweets:

  • Your support & encouragement means so much to me. I hope you understand I can only return to #Idol if the deal is fair.
  • Whatever happens with #Idol, I love you guys and am so happy we have this way to stay in touch.
  • I will give you updates on how things are going, to the extent I can. I know your attention is very powerful & can help a lot.

  1. I like Paula…scripted comments and all (hope she pays the Fox intern a ton for these).

Of course she’ll sign…she has just been doing the contract dance with the show’s producers and has been out drumming up support via twitter and the internet and a few gossip sites.

I look at so many long running TV shows that have changed up their ensemble cast almost every year and are still surviving and thriving…in fact the original Law and Order doesn’t have a single character left from the premier episode and its been going on for what, almost 20 years. TV fans are pretty fickle…and for most it is the show not the “characters” that keep it going.

So she either signs for what they are offering or she dances off into the sunset. Tough choice.

  2. Well I want Paula to return and I think if Ryan and Simon are getting raises, she should get one too, though perhaps not quite as large as her initial offer. So I hope she does come back.

But boo on the 4 judge format staying. I really wish they hadn’t asked Kara back, she’s mostly useless to me as a judge, and plus there is always the threat she could write another coronation song. Though I will say as a judge that Kara is still better than Randy.

If we’re stuck with the four judge format, they really have to find a way of putting their egos aside and not making it all about them again. Because that was some straight up BS this year. We missed out on having more songs by the likes of Alllison, Adam and Kris because of ish like that messing up the show’s timing. Well that and Ken sucking as a producer.

  3. I guess Randy is just quietly going to be back this year. No negotiation talks for him huh?

As many have said AI needs Paula and Paula needs AI, so I think she’ll have to compromise. :(

I think Kara helped Paula step up her game last year. This can continue as long as Simon leaves Paula alone.

  4. Seems that news of Kara’s return has made Paula think twice about her indispensability to the show. Nothing like a little reality check.

That’ll teach me to question MJ’s prognostications! :blush_tb:

  5. Paula just followed up with this tweet: PaulaAbdul Your support & encouragement means so much to me. I hope you understand I can only return to #Idol if the deal is fair.

I am disappointed Kara will be back although I would have preferred her to Randy. If they don’t work out the timing issues, I’ll be relying on mj rather than watching it when it is on anyway.

Tess, I get your point about the characters, but these aren’t fictional characters in a scripted drama. (Well….you know what I mean!) Paula does offer a lot of herself to the kids and the fact that everyone of them that I have seen a response from wants her on the show says a lot to me. She provides support for them in ways we can’t appreciate, imo. I hope she’s back. It definitely wouldn’t be the same show without her.

  6. Yeah, I’ve had a feeling all along this has been a negotiation dance. Well, more power to her, if the others whose contracts were up got a fat raise, she deserves at least a fraction thereof. Funny, she’s coming off her most lucid year and somehow it was working against her?

Since they are obviously sticking to the four-judge format, I wish they’d put a “No Romper Room” clause in their contracts. The first person who starts acting like an adolescent on nationally televised live TV and pulls focus from the contestant needs to be fined $10,000 for each incident.

And they definitely need to implement the Toastmaster’s red-yellow-green timing light for their critiques, since they can’t be trusted to discipline themselves.

  7. I think Paula will be back. With Kara’s recent negotiation, I think it may give Paula the hint that staying will only benefit her in the long run because the Idol production doesn’t really care as much if she stays since Kara has already signed. They aren’t “desperate” for a female judge.

  8. And I sit alone in the universe of they could replace everyone but Ryan and that is the secret to increasing their dwindling ratings. The show would be exciting again if they had new judges. It’s too easy to pick who this set of judges is going to force down our throats at the beginning of the season — honestly, it takes all of the fun and excitement out of the show for me.

I now watch AI on DVR and fast forward through the judges comments. I don’t even watch the results show anymore — just pop over to MJ’s to see who has been voted off.

  9. I wish they would take what they are willing to pay Kara and give it to Paula. Kara can go home and work on her song writing abilities. The mix that works is Simon, Randy and Paula. They have kept the show going this long and having the fourth judge seemed to throw everything out of balance.

  10. The show would be exciting again if they had new judges.

I’m glad I’m not the Lone Ranger here. I think that new current blood would give the show a great pick me up. I think the judges are way over rated and really bring nothing to the show. I too, just set the TV on mute and wait for their rants to be done with…I don’t think they are informative, or witty. There are a lot of Music professionals with “great” personalities that would really add some new spice and pep to the show. And the first one I would like to see go is Simon…I think he has forgotten that he is not the “god” of the music business and that he is not all seeing or all enlightening.

  11. She has to read her script from a card. I am all for get rid of her and find someone who can read the card better.

  12. I feel y’all, but let’s be real: there’s no way AI would survive without Simon. Have you watched any other talent shows recently? They all try to have one British judge and not one of them could even get a job as Simon’s personal servant if they wanted.
Beyonce’s wrong; Simon CAN get to thinkin’ he’s irreplaceable.

  13. I hope Paula finds other persuits. The four judge panel was horrible. They all start the season speaking their minds, and they all end the season speaking Simon’s mind. One judge and 3 parrotts is just annoying.

  14. I think that new current blood would give the show a great pick me up.

I agree to an extent, but isn’t part of the show’s appeal the familiarity of it all? Most people don’t like change, they like consistency. Yes, they tune it to see the contestants, but they also tune in because they want to know “what is mean Simon going to say this week?” and “how is ditzy Paula going to embarrass herself this week?”, and “is this the week that Randy adds a few new words to his vocabulary?”

They’ve created their own dysfunctional TV family, reality or scripted, and that’s a big part of the appeal of the show. Paula will be back. They’d be stupid to let her go.

  15. I’m not sure whether or not I want Paula to come back. I think it depends on whether they can put her on the opposite side of the panel as Simon or not; their sitting next to e/o & playing around annoys me to no end. But I think it’s important for the contestants to have a source of encouragement on the show, however mushy that sounds. I think one of the “problems” I have with the judges is that their TV personalities are all so extreme that I think there can be no reasonable opinion deduced from their rants.

I agree with Tess that I’d rather not have time wasted during the performance nights with the judges rambling on. If they were limited to 15 seconds, or gave their opinions on results night for the contestant’s benefit (as opposed to manipulating the voters) my opinion might be different. But I feel that if they insist having judges express their thoughts on the performances the way the did this past season, it would be far more interesting if they could at least have various guest or new judges at times. People we’ve heard of before, and all that. :B And while I don’t think it’s likely that Simon will go, I’d be fine with it, although I think AI may lose some casual viewers who treat his opinions as law.

  16. They won’t let Paula go, so hopefully she negotiates a killer deal.

  18. If I had to lose anyone, it would be Randy. He is completely irrelevant at this point.

Whether they have three, four, 10, or one judge (Simon), they need to work on time management, b/c S8 was ridiculous. You do NOT cut off a singer’s performance (ironically, Adam’s MW, the one he got the standing ovation for, and the only time only Simon was the only one to speak–well, no, he didn’t speak, he stood up ;-)), you do not go to a tag team format, and you do not rush crits b/c you spent too much time bantering. If SYTYCD has figured this out, Idol can, too.

I still hope Paula returns to Idol.

  19. If I had to lose anyone, it would be Randy. He is completely irrelevant at this point.

Completely agree. I think he is still under contract for a few more seasons though.

  20. Stupid question here: Haven’t all four judges been appearing at the auditions this summer? And if they have been, doesn’t that presuppose renewal? (It would be pretty awkward to have several interminable episodes of auditions with Paula and/or Kara, only to be followed by Paula-less/Kara-less episodes.)

  21. Stupid question here: Haven’t all four judges been appearing at the auditions this summer?

Not yet. That’s scheduled to start in a few weeks. There are several layers of auditions. The once that get most of the press are the cattle call auditions that get thousands of people converging on a stadium. People who make it through those auditions get to audition in front of various producers. Finally, about 100 people or so from each city get to audition in front of the Judges and get filmed for TV. Those get filmed in the late summer/early fall.

It is kind of expensive to make it through the auditions if you don’t live in the audition city because you have to keep coming back for auditions.

I like Paula well enough, but I like singing more. So I only want three judges next year and she was the last to sign, so bye-bye. AI is always looking to have some controversy, let this be the controversy. Paula can move over to SYTYCD and out-crazy Mary.

  22. Ok… tired of the Paula drama.. this little Clash song comes to mind when I think about Paula’s situation.

    Always tease tease tease
You’re happy when I’m on my knees
One day is fine, next day is black
So if you want me off your back
Well come on and let me know
Should I stay or should I go?

Should I stay or should I go now?
Should I stay or should I go now?
If I go there will be trouble
An’ if I stay it will be double
So come on and let me know!

I too like Paula, but I’m kinda done with all this.

  23. “There are several layers of auditions. The once that get most of the press are the cattle call auditions that get thousands of people converging on a stadium. Wow! I knew there were layers, but I didn’t know there was such a lag time. Apart from the expense of returning, this arrangement means there are people who’ve been selected to return because they are laughable who have weeks and weeks to entertain delusions of grandeur.

  24. And then be shut down and humiliated on national TV.

But really, the layers of auditions explain why so many of the contestants get angry at the judges. They just found that they were strung along for so long– maybe even having their family filmed, and having paid travel expenses– only to be set up as a joke. The contestants who just smile respectfully and say “thank you” after being shut down have really commendable self control.

  25. The show would be exciting again if they had new judges.

Well Simon is signed and it looks like Kara will be back. To be honest, I don’t see Randy leaving the show. But there is where they need new life!

  26. I don`t hate Kara but I groan when she constructively goes on and on and she keeps trying to out play Paula on Simons on Rise to the Bait game.
Agree with others, Randy just is not that great. He is as just about as articulate as a wind up talking Randy Dawg Doll. ( I`ve just Lost some of my
punctuation keys….sorry.) Drives me up the wall and down again as I listen to
the same standard phrases He must have a copy of somewhere!! (for me, for you) (I dooon know Dawg, just not feeeelin it) ….(Dawg in the House!!) and
(Da…bomb man!!!) These guys are scripted…..Wow love the writers dawg!!!!!!!!!!!
Simon is, well, Simon…..capricious, often precise and spot on. On a bad day just simply demeaning. But, we love him when he deigns to be charming , kind
    or gives even faint praise!
But Paula….Flawed, kind, occasionally visiting Alice and the cat in wander in, wander out land, and always joyfully dancing. Yet, she manages ( esp since she has competition) to give honest descriptive constructive critiques levened with a Paula brand encourgement. She treats them like people she actually cares about rather than just aim and destroy!!!!! So, OK I really. really do like her and she no longer embarrasses me. I am now invested!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think TPTB still belong to that old boys club. (Dang, we gave them the vote)
(D`ya think they really believe they are worth the coin of a MAN….silly chickens!!
Yeah, I do believe 4 judges are 1 too many. But we must figure out who may
have to go not who might deserve to go. So I hope she retains her self respect and holds out for the fair deal. Go Paula there are so many other great things you can do. I believe, I am only one of many who would cheer you on whatever you decide!!!!! Keep movin and groovin!!!

  27. Paula is the Lady of AI. Kara is still rough edges. Paula will deliver the agenda–as in “Danny, we’ll see you in the finale”. (Would we believe someone new or Kara if they say that this year? And it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t work out, it matters that she says what TPTB want her to say and to say it convincingly.) Paula gets press. Paula will let Simon play off of her and be the goof. Simon has said he wants to do the show with Paula and Randy–he knows not to upset the formula.

Paula will be on the show. She needs to take the $10-15 million and run!

  28. The only reason why he got the standing O was cuz they had no time LOL.

They need to take some of this money and actually give it to top 3 or something, or they can easily afford a 5-10 mill prize pool for top 10.

Paula doesnt need to come back-and yes if she does needs to be on end by randy-who yes is very useless.

Also if these asshats are gonna cry for more money, then act like you give a crap. If obvious they dont even put any thought into the songs they pick, cept simon last 2 yrs anyways. Paula should be banned from choosing song. I mean i dont want to hear these clowns yap about song choice when they cant even get 1 right.
