Maddie Poppe performed “O Holy Night” on Friday’s (Dec 17) The Kelly Clarkson Show.
“My next guest and I have a couple of things in common,” said Kelly, as she introduced Maddie. “We both ended up winning American Idol.” She joked, “Sixteen years apart. But what are numbers! Age is just a silly number!”
Indeed, Kelly Clarkson is the OG Idol winner, taking the first crown in 2002. While Maddie won the show in 2018. She was a first of sorts. She launched the rebooted version of American Idol on ABC.
Speaking of which, Kelly has had American Idol winners as guests on her afternoon talk show, including Carrie Underwood, Scotty McCreery and Jordin Sparks. But Maddie is the first winner from the ABC era to grace The Kelly Clarkson Show stage.
And it makes sense that Maddie would be the first. Maddie and Kelly have met before, of course. In June 2018, fresh off of her win, Maddie joined The Voice winner and Team Kelly member Brynn Cartelli, to present Kelly with an Icon Award at the Radio Disney Awards.
“By turning a singing competition win into global superstardom, this woman paved the way for us and we couldn’t be more excited to be here to present her with the RDMA Icon Award,” Maddie said before she and Brynn handed Kelly the trophy
The SECOND thing Kelly and Maddie have in common? They both have released Christmas albums. Kelly released When Christmas Comes Around in October. And last year, Maddie dropped the EP Christmas From Home. Currently, Maddie is in the midst of a nationwide acoustic Christmas tour, singing holiday songs and fan-favorite originals. She will be on the road spreading holiday cheer through December 31. Check out her schedule HERE.
