American Idol season 9 alum Todrick Hall, who came in as runner-up on The Masked Singer season 6 finale (Read our Recap) chatted with TMZ about how he came to love being The Bull. The costume helped him develop a strategy that fooled everyone on the panel. Well, not everyone! Judge Nicole Scherzinger knew Bull’s identity right away. And one of the first clues? Todrick’s favorite cologne.
Todrick negotiated to keep his Bull costume
Also, while celebrities have to give back their costumes at the end of the season, Todrick had ownership of the costume written into his contract before he even stepped on to the Masked Singer stage.
When TMZ said they heard from other contestants that they could not keep their costumes, Todrick replied dryly, “You heard that from other contestants, you didn’t hear that from Todrick…”
“I am a crazy person about the costumes that I wear,” Todrick explained. “In every Broadway show I get it written into my contract that I’ll do the show if I get to keep the costumes.” He added, ” I have just been that Queen my whole life. I just have to keep everything.”
He didn’t love the Bull costume at first, but then he used it to his advantage
When the show first offered Todrick the Bull costume. he didn’t love it. “I would have rather have gone as something really really…a Popsicle or an ice cream cone with glitter on top of it or something.”
But then, he realized he could use the masculine presenting outfit to his advantage.
“I realized that it changed my stature so much, and made me look a lot bigger than I actually am, and made me look taller.” He continued, “And I love the juxtaposition of it being this really powerful bull that you think you know what type of singer he’s going to be And then I come out singing Britney Spears and doing splits and falling off a scaffolding and strutting around on the stage.”
He believes it kept fans and the panel off-balance. “I just think it threw people for a little bit of a loop. I’m really happy that I went with something that was completely out of my wheelhouse.”
Todrick’s cologne gave him away
However, Todrick didn’t fool judge Nicole Scherzinger for a minute. Oddly, her first clue that her good friend Todrick was the Bull had to do with how he smelled!
After the show ended , in a text conversation, Nicole smelled cologne as Bull performed and she wondered, “Why do I know that?” But then as soon as Bull began singing, she knew the identity of Bull, for sure.
