Kelly Clarkson debuts live version of “Mine” on her talk show

Tuesday’s Kellyoke on The Kelly Clarkson Show was a rare original song. The American Idol OG winner performed one of her new singles “Mine” for the first time live.

The songs from her upcoming album Chemistry details her 7 year marriage. Kelly separated from her husband, Brandon Blackstock in 2020. In the aftermath, the two battled over money and property before the divorce became final in 2021.

The lyrics go, “I hope one day someone will take your heart and hold it tight / Make you feel like you’re invincible deep inside / And right when you think that you’ll try again, they cross a line / And steal your shine like you did mine.”

Afterwards, Kelly Clarkson tells her studio audience that the lyrics in that song “are pretty self evident,” adding, “I was feeling all the feelings when I wrote that one.” The singer explains that she had “never really done anything like that on a chorus and never changed tempo on a song. It was just a different vibe for me overall, so I was very excited about it.”

“Obviously I was also just very angry and sad,” she remarked on how she felt at the time she wrote the song. “But anyway, I did, I let it out and I feel great now. It’s just fun I get to sing it.” She continued, “But it’s taken forever to get these songs done and out there and ready for me to sing them.”

She promises, “It’s not all angry and sad. It’s like a whole arc of an entire relationship, because you can’t just diminish something to just one feeling. “

“It was very helpful to pull myself out of the gutter that I was living in”

Additionally, Kelly posted a live video to her youtube channel where she shared more about Chemistry.

“It was a very personal record,” Kelly says. “It was very good for me to be able to experience the whole relationship on this album, because to diminish something to just bad would be a disservice.”

“‘Mine,’ particularly, was important for me to have songs like that,” Kelly says. “It was very helpful to pull myself out of the gutter that I was living in, ’cause, you know, your whole world changes and you’re like, ‘I didn’t see that coming.'”

She continues, “It’s very important to remember the good as well and not just sit in the crappy.”

The singer also released another single from the set “Me,” a song she wrote with her labelmate Gayle. Kelly shares that Gayle wrote the first verse and chorus before a label person sent the song to Kelly. “I literally got the song, the idea, and then I finished it that night.”

“I was very worried about it because I didn’t know if I’d want to talk about it all the time, ’cause I don’t enjoy that,” Kelly says about being so frank regarding her personal life. “But I think that it’s very important to still be the same artist I’ve been my whole career, which is very open and honest.”

She continues, “Also, look, several songs didn’t make the cut because they were maybe too honest, so I filtered myself. I put out the songs. These 14 songs I feel like are relatable for anyone. It’s not so pointed just at, like, me and what I’m going through.”
