American Idol 2022 winner Noah Thompson insists that he’s not really a songwriter. But that’s not stopping him from trying. Despite not penning his Idol winners single “One Day Tonight,” he is sitting down with his guitar and giving the singer-songwriter thing a go.

His latest effort is titled “On the Outside,” and he played a bit of it for fans on Instagram.

“I don’t consider myself a good songwriter, but we’ll see what y’all think!”

“Here’s something that I’ve been working on,” Noah starts off the video. “I don’t consider myself a good songwriter, but we’ll see what y’all think!” And in a message alongside the song the country singer asks, “Should I finish it?”

The lyrics go: “It’s easy come/it’s easy go/It’s the pain you feel in your soul/It’s when you’re locked up in your mind/Find ways to pass the time/Only heaven knows where this thing goes.”

“But you don’t make it so easy/And I can’t make you stay/But my heart’s only beating away/If I’ve had one too many/Start to drink and drive/Hope you know I’m all good/All good on the outside”

As a novice, Noah writes with a point of view that he could refine if he takes songwriting seriously. Songwriting sessions with professionals in Nashville could help him deliver well crafted songs and in the meantime, his skills will improve. Gotta give him credit for trying, and putting himself out there.

Jimmie Allen and Chayce Beckham introduced Noah to CMA Fest audiences

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Noah made his CMA Fest debut in Nashville, singing “One Day Tonight” on stage during Jimmie Allen’s set. Later, he joined Chayce Beckham, last year’s winner, to sing his winners single, “23.” Both Jimmie and Chayce signed deals wit BBR Records. Noah has likely signed with the label as well, in partnership with 19 Recordings (Chayce is also signed to 19).

“I’m looking forward to getting out and playing shows and meeting people and writing some songs,” he said, adding, “That’s what I’m working on right now. I’m not saying I’m a good songwriter or anything, but you got to start somewhere.”

Noah is “not trying to be a pop country artist”

In an interview with his local Louisa, Kentucky paper last month, the Herald-Dispatch, Noah shared that when it comes to learning the music business, “It all takes time,” adding, “This all has been a huge learning process for me.”

As far as the kind of music he wants to make, he noted his influences included Lawrence County Kentucky native Tyler Childers.

“I’m not trying to be a pop country artist.” he said. “I don’t want to be a pop country artist. That’s not me. That’s why I didn’t wear certain clothes [on American Idol]. I still wear my boots, my blue jeans and my flannel–that’s just me. I want to be a soulful, rock-country type deal.”
