Entertainment Tonight has announced Clive Davis’s song choices for the Top 3:
Elliott Yamin: “Open Arms” by Journey
Taylor Hicks: “Dancing in the Dark” by Bruce Springsteen
Katharine McPhee: “I Believe I Can Fly” by R. Kelly
“Dancing in the Dark” will mark the first time a Bruce Springsteen song has ever been performed on Idol.* According to the ET article, Clive Davis personally contacted Bruce to obtain his permission to use the song.
*Well, that’s not quite true. “Because the Night”, a song Bruce co-wrote with Patti Smith, was performed earlier in the season.
R. Kelly wrote and performed “I Believe I Can Fly”. Interestingly, his name never comes up in the ET article. Kelly has been involved in a variety of scandals with underage girls.
