The Voice 24 Recap: Knockouts Part 2 Live Blog Results with Videos

The Voice season 24 Knockout continue in Part 2, featuring Mega Mentor Wynonna Judd who will assist the coaches–Reba McEntire, John Legend, Gwen Stefani and Niall Horan with their three-way Knockouts. Each coach gets a steal and a save (and maybe more!) Carson Daly returns as host.

Unfortunately, Niall Horan’s tour schedule clashed with the Knockouts rehearsal schedule, so season 25 “double chair” coaches Dan + Shay took his place. Niall will watch his team members perform and will choose the winners.

BY THE WAY DO NOT SPOIL KNOCKOUT AND PLAYOFF RESULTS IN COMMENTS. IT WILL BE TEMPTING. DO NOT DO IT.

The Voice left off Monday night with Mara Justine choosing between Gwen Stefani and Niall Horan. Both tried to steal her after Team John Legend eliminated her. And Mara chooses Team Niall Horan!

Next, Niall Horan drops surprising news. His concert schedule conflicts with The Voice Knockouts rehearsals. so Season 25 “Double Chair” coaching team Dan + Shay will work with his team alongside Wynonna Judd.

Team Niall Horan – Nini Iris, AZÁN, Olivia Minogue

Team members swear they are happy to be mentored by Dan + Shay rather than their life-long favorite, Niall Horan!

AZÁN – Caught up in the Rapture by Anita Baker

Niall and Reba stole AZÁN after John eliminated her in the Battles. She chose Niall. Her parents divorced when she was a kid and she didn’t know about true love until she met her husband. The duo warn her not to close her eyes too much. Wynonna calls her “sexy,” but is looking for more intimacy.

AZÁN has jazz influences all through her style and captures the slinky vibe of this Anita Baker classic. It’s not a showy vocal, but it’s smooth, silky and tasteful. Very nice. She makes perfect vocal choices.

Nini Iris – Karma Police by Radiohead

Nini describes herself as a “dark pop” artist. She writes moody, melancholy songs. After hitting a big ending note, the mentors are surprised. However, Wynonna and the duo want more enunciation.

Nini cuts a compelling figure on stage. Amid the dark angst, she displays assured vocals. She builds the song to an emotional crescendo. She set aside the super high note she performed in rehearsal. I wonder why?

Olivia Minogue – Bring Me to Life by Evanescence

Olivia chose a song in a genre she hasn’t performed before. The duo warn her not to get ahead of the beat. Wynonna wants her to let loose more.

This song needs HUGE powerhouse vocals to work, and Olivia isn’t quite up to the task. The first verse is a little awkward. She’s better at belting, but the iconic original is hard to forget. Amy Lee is a vocal beast.

RESULTS

Gwen believes AZÁN can do anything with her voice. But she picks Nini. Reba loved how Nini paced her performance. John calls AZÁN’s performance “intelligent.” He appreciates Nini’s “open round” notes. He’d pick AZÁN. Niall calls AZÁN “unbelievable” and Nini’s raspy vocals bold. He feels Olivia has grown. Torn, Niall jokes that he should pick a bunch of bad singers to prop up his favorites so he doesn’t have to make hard decisions. The coaches kinda do that at times, actually. Cannon fodder is a thing! Niall picks Nini, AZÁN and Olivia are Eliminated

Team Gwen Stefani – Tanner Massey, RUDI, Chechi Sarai

“I’m a Judd not a judge,” Wynonna declares. NBC previewed this Knockout earlier today.

Tanner Massey – In My Blood by Shawn Mendes

Tanner is a new member of Team Gwen. The teen singer travelled back and forth to Los Angeles as a kid, pursuing an acting and performing career, which meant he didn’t meet kids his own age. Wynonna shares about losing her mother to suicide last year. She also relates to the song. “This hillbilly got it,” she says about connecting to the song.

Tanner switches to a rap verse before he ramps up the emotion. He could work on his vocals. He’s had pitch issues since his Blind Audition. But his pure tone is so raw and open. He’s a vulnerable singer. He opens up on stage. Pitchyness can be fixed in the studio, right?

Chechi Sarai – Never Can Say Goodbye by Jackson 5

Chechi can do a lot with her voice, including an effortless whistle tone. Friends and family have told her that she’s both nostalgic and modern. Wynonna understands insecurity. She feels that the young singer is trying too hard. She should let her talent “shine.”

Whoa. Chechi falters here. She’s got pitch problems too, But she sounds warbly and nervous throughout, although she does improve as the performance builds momentum. Maybe the song choice did her in, because she’s been much much better in the past. Here, for the first time, the whistle tone comes off as a party trick.

RUDI – Smokin’ Out the Window by Silk Sonic

Gwen believes RUDI is a threat to everyone. Wynonna calls her “gangsta.” Gwen advises she add more attitude and animation. After rehearsals, Gwen has completely different opinion about the singers. She doesn’t say it, but Tanner seemed to catch her off guard.

Unlike Chechi, RUDI struts on to the stage with all the confidence in the world. She’d get away with pitch problems if she had them. But she does not! Strong vocals and great stage presence equals a winning performance.

RESULTS

John calls Chechi gifted and her voice “insane,” and RUDI’s stage demeanor “authentic and cool.” He compliments Tanner’s emotional connection. He was John’s favorite. Reba loved the way RUDI played the audience. She calls Tanner “cute as a button.” She didn’t even mind that his enunciation wasn’t always good, because she felt it. Niall notes that in Chechi’s performance, “the connection between the head voice, the whistle tone, the lower bits” sound great individually, but are problematic when they “run into each other.” He adds, “the song choice didn’t help.” Niall somewhat regrets letting Tanner go in the Battles, but feels he’s grown in the meantime. “I still love you Niall!” Tanner responds. Niall would choose Tanner.

Gwen calls Chechi “unique” and notes RUDI’s “crazy vocal ability.” And although RUDI is one of the strongest vocalists on Team Gwen, new member Tanner impresses with his ability to “channel emotion and lyric.” In the end, Gwen chooses Tanner, but then SAVES RUDI But then John and Reba try to steal her. Chechi is eliminated. Tanner is very very very SHOCKED. Gwen reminds RUDI that she IS HER COACH. She’ll DIE if she leaves! John would work to put her in the best position to win and show who she is. RUDI STAYS with Gwen. She mentions their “connection.”
