The Kelly Clarkson Show may pull up its Los Angeles roots and move to the New York City metro area.
Variety reports that the daytime talk show, hosted by American Idol OG winner Kelly Clarkson, would move East for its fifth season beginning in the fall 2023. Renewed for a fifth and sixth season, The Kelly Clarkson Show has filmed in Los Angeles on the Universal lot since its launch in 2019.
A NBCU spokesperson confirmed to Variety that NBCUniversal is in negotiations to move the show to the east coast, but nothing is finalized. Sources close to the show say Kelly asked NBCU to explore the move out of Los Angeles.
The Jennifer Hudson Show Renewed for Season 2
All staffers and crew will all be given the opportunity to move with the show, a source says, as production hopes to maintain consistency and keep as many people on board as possible who have been with the show since the beginning.
The past two seasons of The Kelly Clarkson Show have kicked off the show’s premiere week out of New York City. Production could move to Manhattan or possibly elsewhere in the tri-state area. Also, a source suggests, the tax incentive on the east coast could be better than if production stayed in California.
Kelly is not a big fan of Los Angeles
In an interview with Variety last year, Kelly said if she did not have to be in Los Angeles, she would live elsewhere, “It’s nothing against L.A. It’s just hard for me to be in a place that has one season. I love rain, and I love storms. I’m just from a different place. It’s important to love your life – I love work and I love everybody I work with and I love my friends, but geographically speaking, that wouldn’t be my first choice.”
Would Kelly continue as a The Voice Coach if her talk show moves East?
Kelly is returning to The Voice this spring for season 23 alongside Blake Shelton, Chance the Rapper and Niall Horan. But what would a move to New York City mean for her future involvement as coach on the show? In interviews, Kelly shared how The Voice and The Kelly Clarkson Show filmed on the same lot. All she had to do was walk practically next door to film one show or the other.
NBC could work out a schedule that would allow Kelly to fly back and forth to film both shows. Ryan Seacrest does the NYC to LA shuffle to film both Live with Kelly and Ryan and American Idol at the same time. But with two young children to take care of, the schedule could be burdensome. She skipped the fall season to spend the summer with her children. If she does return to The Voice, it would probably be only one cycle a year.
The singer also has other Irons in the fire. She’s been writing and recording her next album for Atlantic records, and hopes to tour.
