So You Think You Can Dance is returning to FOX! Season 18 set to film in Atlanta
GOOD NEWS! So You Think You Can Dance is coming back to FOX! According to reports, season 18 is filming now in Atlanta Georgia.
According to a new report from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter, Rodney Ho, SYTYCD will be filming outside of Los Angeles for the first time ever. In other words, according to the AJC, the show will be filming more than just a audition stop in Atlanta.
FOX probably got a bunch of tax credits from the Georgia film commission that made bringing the show back cost effective. So You Think You Can Dance took a break during the pandemic, but then returned summer 2022, only to seemingly be cancelled by FOX again.
Another thought: The writers and actors strike has set back production on scripted shows, and FOX may have planned to bring back SYTYCD in case they needed it to fill in the gaps left by sidelined shows. FOX’s mid-season schedule is already out, although a disclaimer states that additional schedule details will be announced.
Season 17 had no live shows, which was a major drawback. But the lack of dance competitions on US TV, other than the celebrity focused Dancing with the Stars is unfortunate. The show’s return to television in any fashion possible is welcome news.
Filming in Atlanta begins December 4
According to the local union, IATSE 479, which represents most of the crew working on production, So You Think You Can Dance will begin filming on December 4th in Pullman Yards in Kirkwood. They plan to shoot throughout December and January, and wrap filming on January 29th.
So far, FOX has not officially announced the celebrity judges or this year’s host. The 17th season, which aired last year, was hosted by Cat Deeley for a 16th time. The judges included So You Think You Can Dance’ vet, the late Stephen “tWitch” Boss, Dance Moms and DWTS alum JoJo Siwa, and Glee actor Matthew Morrison, who was later replaced by Leah Remini. (Morrison was fired after a contestant accused him of inappropriate behavior).
There is also no official airing date set by Fox yet, but SYTYCD has mostly aired in the summer months (Save one season in the fall, that came right after the summer edition. Yes, that’s how popular SYTYCD was back in the day).
