Season 9 Top 12 Girls Behind The Scenes, Plus My AOL Recap

Sorry about last night’s song spoiler failure.  As it turned out, my supersecretspy was asked to be a seat filler for the live show, and he didn’t leave the studio (or get his cell phone back) until after the live show taped.

However, he did send me a few behind the scenes tidbits from last night’s show, posted after the jump.

My spy said Lacey Brown sang beautifully during dress rehearsal, but then it went all wrong during the live show.

Unfortunately for Lacey, I think she’s in danger, as is Ashley Rodriguez, whose lackluster performance and early slot will probably screw her over.  We might be saying bye bye to Paige Miles as well, who I don’t think did enough to overcome going first and her lack of screen time.

  • Check out my recap for AOL Television right HERE.

Who do you think will be leaving tonight?  How did Ellen do on her first live show? Are you as happy the band is back on stage as I am? Tell us what you think!

From my SuperSecretSpy:

– I felt soooooo bad for Lacey. During the dress rehearsal she was amazing. I loved her phrasing and subtle changing of the melody, i got chills. I don’t know what happened during the live show though, she just fell apart. It was like she and the band were working against each other. After the judges comments she was crying backstage and during the commercial Kara went back and gave her a hug and was giving her advice. I really hope she gets another shot.
– I know last year there were lots of reports that Kara was the odd woman out on the judging panel during commercial breaks and stuff. It didn’t seem that way at all tonight. She would get up and leave with Randy and Simon, if anything Ellen was left at the table with nothing to do. Simon and Kara were also chatting and giggling all night so it seems like they are a lot closer now.
– I was not a Katie fan at all before tonight, but seeing her in person really won me over. She kind of reminds of Diana DeGarmo in a good way. She has the big voice and really worked the stage/audience. I was surprised the judges didn’t give her better comments.

  1. Ellen better bring it for boys night out tonight — because she was a serious disappointment last night. By the end of the night she just had that deer in the headlights look and was parroting the rest of the crowd. Fuller must have his greedy little paw on a judge’s “groupthink” button.

And I am probably the only one, but I still wish this section of the competitition was a voice w/piano only section.

  2. I thought the band was atrocious last night and I feel for Lacey. Correct me if I’m wrong but weren’t the top 24 rounds taped season 7? I think that would have been a better route to go because I do think there were genuine sound issues last night that they didn’t have the time to fix because it was live.

  3. I was really looking forward to Lacey and had told several friends she would be one to watch. Unfortunately she did not do well at all. I was so surprised. I’m afraid she’s gone. That really sucks considering Hailey, Ashley, Janell and several others are not as talented as she is. I still don’t know what the hell the judges were thinking putting Hailey thru. I guess her stage charisma is going to make up for her inability to carry a tune. I can’t really complain about how it goes. There was no one even remotely close to making me want to pick up the phone to vote.

  4. I didn’t think Ellen was a disappointment at all. She was right on with her critiques. She was especially good considering it was her first live show…no one misses Paula. I also thought Randy may have done the best job he has ever done. His comments were insightful and concise. I thought Simon was actually the worst of all the judges last night. His repetitive comments are so last year..I am ready for him to move on.

  5. Based on the show last night I’m not quite sure this is a girls year unless they rigg the vote. The show sucked. The girls were extremely pitchy and mostly boring. I can’t see any of them going up against current artists…. even the non-singing live ones.

I hope the boys bring it tonight and sing something other than the Beatles. Maybe pick a song in the current century? :)

  6. I thought the judges for the most part were right on. Simon looks the most interested he ever has for about 5 years now. lol

  7. Correct me if I’m wrong but weren’t the top 24 rounds taped season 7?

    Yes, they were.

  8. I threw Lacey a couple votes cuz I felt so bad for her, and I hoped to see more… we’ll see. Hope she gets another shot.

  9. Simon has started “casting” the top 10. I’m glad the spoilers stating Siohban was singing “It’s Raining Men” was wrong. I don’t think she would have survived that song. Surprisingly, she was my favorite. I loved her version of Wicked Games. I thought her vocals were perfect. I didn’t care for Simon making her appear dark, dull and just downright depressing. I suppose to him she is the polar opposite of Taylor Swift. Siohban>>>>>Taylor Swift. Still love Lily Scott, thought the song choice was a bit odd. She won me over, though. I love Alanis Morrisette. LOVE. Crystal did it justice, but I wanted more from her. Alanis is so intense; Crystal’s version was not. Paige’s song choice was odd as well. It worked for David Cook — electric guitar, rocker voice. I was perplexed the entire time she performed. Her vocals are good, but why that song? The song choices were all over the map, very bizarre. It was like some got the bottom of the barrel of song choices. As a viewer, I need to trust that when the song choices are presented, it is done fairly. I definitely believe it needs to be addressed. Simon clearly doesn’t believe it’s an issue, but I do. They should all have a shot at a decent song without having to draw straws and someone ending up with “BEAT IT”.

Ellen seemed a bit out of sorts. I want her to be brave and just say what she thinks, and not be intimidated by the fact that she is not a professional singer or musician or in the music industry. I agreed with a lot of what she was saying. Can Ellen deal with the machinations of reality tv? Simon will always have an agenda. Will Ellen lose confidence if he overrides her opinion of a contestant, no matter how spot-on that opinion might be, to suit his agenda/contestant pick? I want Ellen to just be herself and step it up — at times, she looked distraught. I want her to be the Ellen I saw Hollywood week. I have every hope, she will come through for the viewers and the show.

  10. I’m about to start listening to the mp3s from last night so that I’ll be able to tell more about them. For some reason, I usually end up liking performances more the next day.

    Random note:
Katie Stevens’ outfit last night reminded me of Glee’s “Sectionals” outfits. lol

  11. I wasn’t disappointed in Ellen in the least. I was surprised by sensing moments of pure nervousness with her. But hey, it was her first live show! She didn’t talk over anybody and I thought she gave great critiques for the most part. They were too nice with Haeley, that just didn’t work. The first 4 performances I don’t think the judges were even listening, I think they were sticking to a predetermined agenda.

That makes me really really sad for Lacey. BANDZILLA, I knew it had to be something with the sound plus her nerves really showed. I want to HUG HER RIGHT NOW. How far is it to LA?? Thank you Kara for having a heart. I hope Lacey lasts another week (or 5). I voted for her and Katelyn as much as I could for about an hour.
gangreen29, I agree. They should tape the semi-finals and go live for the Thur. results.

  12. Random note:
Katie Stevens’ outfit last night reminded me of Glee’s “Sectionals” outfits. lol

    I immediately thought that too!

  13. I thought Ellen was quite strong and being herself, because that is really her job BE ELLEN. She put Simon in the position of parroting her on the “old fashioned” comment. Moreover, Ellen was the only one who stepped up and gave Siobhan a fair assessment. Not as good as the Stevie Wonder song is more of a FAIL than a cogent evaluation of a performance and both Simon & Randy said that multiple times.

  14. I thought Ellen was great! I enjoyed all she had to say and agreed with her for the most part. As usual, I agree with most of what Simon said too.

I have to wonder if some of the bad sound isn’t because of the mix for TV. I remember that problem a few times last season, like when Adam sang Cryin’ and all we could hear was the backing singer. There are some performances that the judges loved and said sounded great last night, but I thought were next to horrible.

  15. Well, I guess that’s why there’s chocolate and vanilla, LOL. I thought last night’s show was the best Girls Top 12 I’ve ever seen. I liked that it was actually live. There were some disappointments, but I didn’t find anybody horrible unlike past years (Amy Davis, anybody?)

Haely isn’t my favorite, but I enjoyed her performance (although my kids HATED her). She has a lot of potential if she can learn to control her voice. The recap video they played at the end was terribly off-key (was that from the dress rehearsal?), but I didn’t think her live performance was “pitchy” so much as quirky. She changed the melody in a way that was clearly off-putting for many, but I thought she was solidly middle-of-the-pack last night.

Lacey was the big disappointment for me, but now I feel bad that I didn’t pick up the phone and throw her a few votes. I liked her and was rooting for her, but she wasn’t good last night, at all. Funny how everybody was worried about Didi’s nerves, but Lacey and Ashley were the ones who came unglued from my vantage point.

I’d like to see more of Paige and Michelle before I form opinions on them, but based on that awful recap clip they played of Paige (where she’s barely singing) and her lead-off placement (better known as the kiss of death), I don’t have high hopes for her. Too bad.

Crystal, Siobhan and Lilly were my favorites, and I voted for each a few times before the final group of women’s figure skaters competed, but that was it. I thought Kaitlyn was pretty good too. She actually surprised me. Janell still does nothing for me. I’d send her and Ashley home tomorrow night. The rest I’d like to see more of before I write anybody else completely off.

  16. I loved the judging last night….and I am so glad that Ellen is one of them. I think she represents the people…at least she said what I was thinking. I am voting for Haley and Ashley to leave on our poll here….I really am so bad at predicting but my son and I are competing!;) I hope Lacey is given a second chance….I really think she has great potential! (My fav? Crystal and Siohban so far….but…I was really bored last night.) I hope my love for the show hasn’t faded after Adam made it for me last year!

  17. Of course, as a huge fan of Mamasox, She was my favorite past night. Siobhan is a weird little one, and I really do love it. She was my second last night. I had to watch Lilly’s twice. First time around, I HATED it. For some reason, after rewatching it, she easily became my third favorite of the night. Very nice, I want more. Surprisingly, I really liked Michelle, even though I think Alicia is extremely difficult to top. She was my fourth favorite, and she’s the better of the two R&B “divas”. Liked Didi, but wanted something more from her. She’s fifth. Katelyn was a great surprise, too, she’s sixth. Katie, not so surprising and a bit too old for her, but I’d put her seventh. Paige was good, but a bit messy. That last note was awesome. 8th place goes to her. From here on it gets messy.

I liked Ashley, but the judges were right on. Very copycat, and I hate comparing, but Michelle is the better R&B girl. Janell just did wrong and was outclassed heavily. Once again, I’m comparing…. Didi and Crystal are better. Haeley is cute and bubbly and I appreciate her uniqueness, and I loved her arrangement actually. However, her vocals are WAY off. She needed to wait a few years. Lacey was just plain disastrous. I want her to get another chance, but I don’t think she’ll get it.

In my ideal world, people would sympathize with Lacey and let her go on and Janell and Haeley would be gone. I think Lacey has the biggest chance of leaving, but I also think Haeley has a big chance of leaving, but she does have VFTW backing her….. I kinda don’t mind that, I thought she had an eerie yet strong presence up there. I can’t put my finger on it, but she’s compelling.

  18. Interesting what your spy said about the judging dynamics. That they’d foul around without Ellen, because I think on camera Ellen is taking this VERY serioussly, and the others judges have fallen in step with her. Randy actually gave some good critiques and advice.

  19. Correct me if I’m wrong but weren’t the top 24 rounds taped season 7?

    Yes, they were.

I thought S7 was live. I remember during the pre-lims, David Cook set to sing next, but there was a technical issue with his guitar and AI needed to change the line-up as it was a live show.

  20. I floved, floved, floved Siobhan Magnus!! She’s too adorable in a nerdy kinda way! And her Simon mimicking her dull responses on stage was hilarious!!! But i would like to see her belt out next week and show us she’s a female Adam lambert!! I voted for her tons!

And what is up with that Katie Stevens? She looks like a human version of Minnie Mouse and her constant backing of her friends with paper cut-out faces of her freak me out. Plus, her performance was just meh…i guess after Lambert performed that song last season, she totally doesn’t measure up.

  21. I think Lacey Brown was stupid to answer back to Simon about her song being boring. Simon didn’t say it was slow, he said it was boring, and whether a song is boring to listen to or not is for the listener to decide, not the singer.

And Simon was right, it was boring. Actually I’m rather surprised by the judges, they actually gave useful critiques, even if I don’t always agree with them.

  22. My favorites was Didi, Crystal, & Siobhan

Katie Stevens shouldn’t have sang that song. Actually how bout this…(& I know this is a strong opinion) but I personally think that anything Adam sang last year should NOT be sang this year. Its a bad idea. LOL I mean noone can do it like Adam.

    JMO :)

  23. To me Lacey gave the most honest performance. Yeah, she did have problems, but I felt her perfomance more than any other. I hope she gets another chance. I’d love to see her there next week. Siobhan was my favourite overall.

Didi, Crystal and Katie all disappointed a bit. Which is good, there really isn’t one person standing out so far. Although Katie surprised me with her stage presence. I though she rocked the stage and she showed personality during that perfomance.

  24. I thought S7 was live. I remember during the pre-lims, David Cook set to sing next, but there was a technical issue with his guitar and AI needed to change the line-up as it was a live show.

I think Top 24 and 20 were taped and Top 16 was live in Season 7. (Why do I remember this crap?)

If the girls are really so much better than the boys, then these boys better at least bring the entertainment and be hilariously bad. I want Wham songs and throwing of mic stands.

  25. I agree, HannaB. I think the judges were probably surprised when they watched the performances back. The first four performances were so off, it had to be a sound issue. Also, the judges can’t see the way they’re coming across on television. For example, Siobhon has a real presence on TV, as does Crystal. Katie, on the other hand, might have worked the stage well for the live show, but her facial expressions were too much for the camera. She’s got to learn to dial down the “Queen of Show Choir” stuff.

I liked Ellen. I could tell she was a bit nervous, but I think she definitely gives the television audience perspective, and she was dead on. For Katie, we, at home, don’t want to see a 16 year old singing “I’m feeling good” while giving come-hither looks to the camera. Katelynn has a great voice and is very pretty, but there was something about her performance that reeked of trying too hard. And Crystal did enough to capture viewers’ imaginations so they want to see her again, next week, thus they’ll vote for her. And I liked how she said, “You’re better than that” to Lacey, letting the audience know they should give her another chance. (And I hope they do.)

  26. My thoughts are that KATIE STEVENS will remain in the competition till near the end. BUT- I also think she will be the Katherine Mcphee of this season as in I remember so many folks did not like her on the blogs? Katie is pretty, charming, good voice, and some of the “it” factor with some sex appeal mixed in…AND that spells DANGER to alot of folks and cause for alarm which turns into-“I don’t like her”….anyone agree????????????????

  27. I thought Simon was actually the worst of all the judges last night. His repetitive comments are so last year..I am ready for him to move on.

    My thoughts exactly!!! LOL
I also really really enjoyed Ellen, with a few different words in my head, she could have talked directly out of my head. And Randy, who changed him? He actually sounded intelligent and like he cared. I hope that lasts through out the season.
And rayl I agree with you on Katie, I already am on the fence with her, because of all the over pimping…

  28. My thoughts are that KATIE STEVENS will remain in the competition till near the end. BUT- I also think she will be the Katherine Mcphee of this season as in I remember so many folks did not like her on the blogs? Katie is pretty, charming, good voice, and some of the “it” factor with some sex appeal mixed in…AND that spells DANGER to alot of folks and cause for alarm which turns into-”I don’t like her”….anyone agree????????????????

Er….ok to whatever you are tryint to say cos i didn’t really get that. But i am, right now, really really disliking Katie. I think it’s all the paper cut-out faces of herself that her friends keep holding. *shivers*

  29. Siobhan was my fav cause I like those strong broadway voices…Katie for her style and a bit of the “Mcphee” factor….agree with Simon on all the cloned Adele/Duffy art types but they still had good chops! Did mot like the chick(name?)in white dress and red guitar singing Beatles song-She reminded me of BABY JANE HUDSON(Bette Davis) from movie “What Ever Happened To Baby Jane”…LOL…..

  30. i don’t care if lacy brown sounded like goddess in rehearsal, she bombed big time on tv. her voice was extremely flat and at times warbled like a goat. her and haeley had the worst vocals of the night, by far. paige was lackluster and ashley was boring, so they too are in trouble. i will not be sad to see any of those four go, they add nothing to the competition.

  31. I loved Crystal. I liked Siobhan and Lilly.

I agree with MJ, I’m thinking Ashley and Paige will go…I’m iffy on Paige because I think she did really well, but she went first. If not her, Lacey will probably go, but I’d like to see her get another shot.

I thought Ellen did really well. She wasn’t overly nice, but she still tried to stay positive, and I think she had some good comments overall. Way to go, Ellen…!

Also, yes I am quite pleased that the band is back on stage. Good stuff.

  32. Siobhan was outstanding. Crystal quite good. Like them both a lot. Ashley was the worst –nothing intriguing about her at all. Haeley did not sing well but something about her interests me and I would like to see her at least one more time. Lacey I think is going to go out this round.
The four judges were the best I can remember. Randy is like a different person and Ellen is just so honest. Like her a lot. I thought Simon was relevant and Kara is tolerable in this group. Hope they can keep it up.

  33. Watching Randy last night, I was reminded of the Randy I’ve been seeing during American Idol Rewind’s Season 5. Randy used to actually offer critiques on a much more regular basis. Glad to see him stepping it up again this season.

Kara really bugged me. She seemed determined to emulate the relationship Simon and Paula used to have.I’m sure Ellen will improve as she settles in, although I disagreed with a number of her reactions.

As for the girls – I loved Crystal, Lilly and Siobhan. Katelyn pleasantly surprised me and I’m looking forward to hearing more. I sincerely hope Haeley is one of those sent home tomorrow accompanied by either Ashley or Paige.

  34. Katie is pretty, charming, good voice, and some of the “it” factor with some sex appeal mixed in…AND that spells DANGER to alot of folks and cause for alarm which turns into-”I don’t like her”….anyone agree????????????????

    No!

I don’t know that people disliked Kat for sex appeal and a good voice. I kinda — though not thoroughly, at all — disliked her at times because I thought that most of the time she didn’t even come close to living up to the potential of her beautiful voice and because she seemed like a neurotic, rather fragile, sometimes phony mess of a person who was being madly propelled toward a dream of musical stardom that mostly belonged to her major major stage mother. I didn’t find her dangerous in the least!

And she and Katie seem utterly different to me.

Katie seems like a (very) young kid with a beautiful voice who has virtually no sex appeal at all; she seems pretty nunnish to me, and, to me, so far she sings like the standout in the school choir, and as if the school choir is currently singing on American Idol. Very much a young teenager. And so far I haven’t seen either neurosis or a stage mother! … So she doesn’t seem dangerous to me either.

So I’m puzzled by your seeing this similarity. To whom do you think these two pose a danger? I guess if you mean that they are threats in the competition, then, yeah, Kat clearly was and I’m sure Katie will be. They both have great voices and are pretty (though, to me, in utterly different styles and ways). But so are/were a bunch of other people, in both seasons. And neither one seems like Mata Hari or any other kind of actual dangerous woman to me at all! Kat seemed fragile and Katie seems young, to me.

  35. The four judges were the best I can remember.

I would chalk this up just about entirely to the other three feeling that they have to live up to Ellen’s seriousness about the whole thing. They feel stupid blowing it off with meaningless comments or spending too much time on fourth-grade cutesy-judge-y games (although Kara seemed to be threatening this in her little flirt with Simon) when a friggin A-lister who already has another full-time on-air job on her own very successful tv show takes the whole thing so seriously. May this continue for the entire season.

  36. Slezak’s take on Katie Stevens:

Katie Stevens: B- If this was a game of Jeopardy, and ‘Feeling Good’ was a clue, then I’d have to buzz in and say ”Which song is even more played-out on Idol than ‘Fallin’?” But I could have forgiven Katie for walking the path of Adam Lambert, A.J. Tabaldo, Leslie Hunt, and countless auditioners before her — if she’d been vocally on-point and energetic. Instead, the 17-year-old contestant robotically stalked the stage with all the charisma of a first runner-up at the Miss Schaghticoke Fair pageant. Actually, scratch that. The shimmying dance moves Katie tentatively attempted would’ve knocked her down a slot or two on the leader-board. And sorry, that completely botched low note on the initial ”And I’m feelin’ goooooood” was like a single axel where Mr. Lambert once performed a quad. Hashtag this at Twitter as #ComparisonFail.

  37. Katie is pretty, charming, good voice, and some of the “it” factor with some sex appeal mixed in…AND that spells DANGER to alot of folks and cause for alarm which turns into-”I don’t like her”….anyone agree????????????????

Uh no, it wasn’t that. Try “spoiled daddy’s girl” for starters.

  38. I thought Ellen did a good job – and Randy actually made sense. I feel bad that Kara annoys me so much, and Simon annoys the crap out of me when he complains about “you all sound like Adele and Duffy” when he helped put them through… knowing they sounded like that. Bah.

I didn’t think it was a disaster last night, but certainly it wasn’t great, either. I am still on team Boxersox. I’m sad about Lacey, I really like her voice but that performance just wasn’t good. There are a bunch I want to hear again, so hope they make it through.

  39. and Simon annoys the crap out of me when he complains about “you all sound like Adele and Duffy” when he helped put them through… knowing they sounded like that. Bah.

And when he deliberately sought them out and put them through *because* they sound like that! Megan Joy, anyone? I don’t know what Cowell is thinking when he makes transparently false statements like that.

  40. Loved the recap.

This year I’ll only be reading MJ’s and Slezak reviews. Maybe Cantiello’s. Any other review is just a waste of time. You gotta stick to the experts.

Crystal is officially my favorite. Her performing skills give me chills, and for the lack of more original words, she is truly refreshing. However, I’m not gonna stress over it, my chosen one never wins anyway.

Talking about chosen ones, Katie really gets on my nerves. My real problem with her, is that we are coming into this season after having 17 years old David Archuleta and 16 years old Allison Iraheta rocking our worlds for the past couple of years. Two really, really, talented young singers. The kind of performers that made you think “how the hell can she/he be that young and perform like an old soul?”. So with Katie, yes you have to admit she is talented, but I just cannot be that impressed with young performers anymore.

  41. Yeah, Katie Stevens immediately gave me a Diana Degarmo vibe. And NOT in a good way. That was probably my least favorite season, and her making it to the final over IMO much better talent did not help. DNW plastic young pageant girls. But I don’t find her DANGEROUS. LOL.

  42. Well, if anyone is keeping count – I have to add that I like Ellen. She gave her opinion as a music fan. I thought she spoke from her gut as opposed to Kara who I just CAN. NOT. STAND. It seems as though she’s trying to sell herself as a cool chica wannabe as opposed to the genuinely cool chica that Ellen actually is. IMHO of course.

I haven’t memorized all the contestant names…but why is it that white girls do this stationary, hip to the side, knees bent, stance that irritates the crap outta me? One or two did it last night. Carrie did it, Taylor Swift does it, countless others….just STOP!

  43. I <3 Ellen

    that's so true carolinachrms

Like I said in the other thread,I liked didi,Michelle, and some other people but last night was boooring

Katie is pretty, charming, good voice, and some of the “it” factor with some sex appeal mixed in…

    um.what?

  44. “Uh no, it wasn’t that. Try “spoiled daddy’s girl” for starters.” — Oceana

Are you aquainted with Katie Stevens? I live in the area, I don’t know her at all. But like all things, I’m sure there will be six-degrees of separation if I ask around about her. The Portuguese-American people I have met in the area are extremely hard working and want the best for their children. Many of the kids are 1st or 2nd generation Americans. She appears to be a talented, well-spoken, respectful young woman. I believe her theatre background may be a detriment, needing to tone down the theatrics and pick more current music.

  45. This year I’ll only be reading MJ’s and Slezak reviews. Maybe Cantiello’s. Any other review is just a waste of time. You gotta stick to the experts.

I gotta throw in some love for TWoP’s reviews…Jacob is hilarious, haha.

  46. Gah, too busy working to read and post earlier. But had to respond to all the Siobhan love — I’m just not getting it. I thought the overwrought Stevie Wonder song was painful to listen to AND to watch. She wasn’t the worst last night by far, but I’m not impressed yet. Got to lose the throaty/nasally sound and then maybe I’ll be on board.

Loved Lilly, liked Didi and Crystal. Haeley must leave soon or I’ll die of saccharine overload.

  47. Even with the new blonde hair and super skinny bod, Kat is as sexy as a wet noodle. She’s such a pretty girl, but I find her robotic when she sings. I did kind of like her in some movie she was in. Katie is still in show choir, except Glee does it so much better! If they are going to pimp Katie, I’m not sure what potential sales they see in her.

I can’t say I have a fav of the girls yet this year.

  48. totally agree, seattle_girl. it seems siobhan had a great ‘stevie moment’ which we didn’t really see, and otherwise she seems fine but kind of awkward and generally not that impressive.
