shares a few of his thoughts on the upcoming Season of American Idol with Billboard Magazine:

“Hopefully we can find a girl who can take the crown from the boys who won the last two years, ” Jackson tells Billboard.com, referring to 2009 champ Kris Allen and 2008 winner David Cook. “I’d love to see a girl come up.”

Jackson was also surprised by what he heard in front of the judges table during the audition process. “I think generally what happens is whoever wins that season, you get more and more of that. But this season’s a little different. I would’ve thought you’d have a trillion Adam Lamberts show up, or a trillion Kris Allens. But that’s not what happened. It was very interesting. This is a whole different bunch.”

A girl WILL win idol this year. At least that’s what TPTB will be gunning for–there hasn’t been a girl winner since Season 6’s Jordin Sparks. If Randy didn’t see copycat contestants, it’s because the producers didn’t let them through to the judges. Yo.

As for Simon Cowell leaving Idol, Randy pleads the fifth, “I won’t believe it ’til I see it. I haven’t spoken to him about it. You just never really know; there are a lot of alleged things going on, but who knows, right? We’ll see what happens.”

Now I wonder what’s going to happen to Randy’s poor “assistant” who asked for Grammy voting advice on twitter? Which is worse: Randy asking voting advice from the twitterverse, or allowing his assistant to fill out his Grammy ballot? Hmmmm…..

  1. A girl WILL win idol this year. At least that’s what TPTB will be gunning for–there hasn’t been a girl winner since Season 6’s Jordin Sparks. If Randy didn’t see copycat contestants, it’s because the producers didn’t let them through to the judges. Yo.

THIS MJ you speak the truth!!!

  2. Ummm, Randy, that’s because there aren’t a trillion Adam Lamberts. :)

  3. Major girl pimpage coming up. It may just backfire on them…

Yup!! I was just thinking the same thing. As a judge, I don’t think Randy should give his preferences, especially this early in the game. Its not fair, and everyone is going to know his motive when he disses all the guys.

  4. I’m pretty irritated with their “girl will win”-hoopla, since it’s so clearly contradicting with the ideas of “anyone can win” and “America will decide”. Could you please be a little less blatant?

It’s like this every year. I clearly remember last year they kept telling us how the boys were better and the girls didn’t stand out.
They’ve been pimping guys for two years, time for a girl. Plus, the girls do better on the charts anyway. No surprise they’d want to go back there.

  5. If Simon does decide to announce he is leaving, this season will be very tense and ackward on the judges table

  6. I don’t mind a little extra pimping of the girls. It balances it out more, because there is a certain subset of fans that will never vote for someone without a penis.

  7. I guess the guys should just stay home then. They had their chance to pick good girls last year except for Allison, they thru them all away. I really was hoping we wouldnt see a bunch of Adam or Kris look a likes. Different people for different years makes it interesting.

  8. I am all for women getting back on top on Idol. A huge chunk of the voters are females who mostly want to vote for males because they develop crushes on them, so whoever the best girl is in 2010, she will have to be incredible in order to win over a guy. Too bad Allison didn’t come on Idol this year. She was my favorite last year.

I’m watching the show but I don’t think I can really care about any of the contestants anymore because when they’re on Idol they get to sing some of the best songs ever written to showcase their talent. Many singers have been great on the show, but the ones who get record contracts are forced to sing the garbage 19 forces on them for “marketing” purposes. Most of the songs they end up singing don’t work for me (or them). JMO

  9. I don’t expect things to be terribly different this year. Just more of the same BS. Randy, etc. always make these predictions and then push to be right.

On the Randy tweets, I wouldn’t be so quick to buy the ‘assistant’ story. Either way Randy doesn’t look good, though.

  10. Maybe they should just ban cute guys that play guitars before the full blown female pimpage starts..

  11. They’ve been pimping guys for two years,

That’s because in Season 7, they wanted either David Archuleta or Michael Johns to win, with the possibility of Carly Smithson taking the crown. In Season 8, they wanted either Adam Lambert or Danny Gokey. So, they planted the seeds in the viewers’ minds both years, plus they gave most of these people “back-ups.” Similar types who would — when knocked out — have their votes transferred to the contestants they really wanted.

Who did we end up with? David Cook and Kris Allen. Both guys, who could conceivably be considered one of the many “back-ups” of their respective seasons who were underestimated and took advantage of the situation when the front runners floundered.

time for a girl. Plus, the girls do better on the charts anyway. No surprise they’d want to go back there.

Well, Randy was touting a curly haired girl the season Jordin won, so I don’t doubt that a girl will win. I’m just not sure it will be the person they intend. In Jordin’s case it was who they intended. In Cook’s and Kris’ case, it wasn’t.

  12. Right now I imagine Mishavonna Henson, Kristen McNamara, Felicia Barton, and Jessica Langseth are screaming at there computer’s.

Somewhere in the back of my mind I always wondered if it was that Sabrina Sloane chick he was talking about. The skinny curly haired black girl who was a Shocking! boot in the semis.

  14. Way back when I actually liked this man. But now? Heh. He’s such a tool.

  15. I’ve watched and enjoyed every season of Idol with 5 and 8 being my favorites but I have a bad feeling about this upcoming season and this interview by Randy does nothing to dispel my apprehensions.

The judges were so obnoxious last season with too little time spent on the contestants. The show succeeded in spite of the judges but I am not willing to watch another season if Simon continues to act so bored and neither Randy and Kara do it for me. Ellen really needs to bring something or I don’t think the show can continue to be number one. I don’t want to see The Ellen show…..I am all about the contestants.

The other networks have been reluctant to air a good show against AI but I have a feeling that a really good show could now knock AI off it’s pedestal. Hope I am wrong but we will see.

    I

  16. I’m kinda ready for another female Idol winner.

ETA: And I agree. Randy just strikes me as a tool now. A useless tool. JMO.

I don’t think this is exactly the case. Well at least with Cook, he may not have been an instant favorite but it became pretty clear he was tptb’s chosen one by the time the top 10 rolled around. I truly think S8 is the major exception to tptb rule. They will get their way this year.

  18. Ummm, Randy, that’s because there aren’t a trillion Adam Lamberts. :)

    True. ^^^^^

I’m talking about the beginning of the season before the viewers have seen anyone, as we are now.

You’re right, though. Once we got to top 10 and David performed Billie Jean to much viewer applause and with, I imagine, comparable Itunes downloads, it became clear that “Hello” was no fluke, and they switched horses. Or, at least, they switched from Michael Johns and Carly Smithson to David Cook. Archie and Cook were never back-ups for each other. They became the primary competitors.

  20. hmmmm. So, it’s not going to be “the best season ever”?????? Well crap – I was counting on it!

  21. I think you’re right mj.

It will be FUN to watch this season. Yes a girl to win, why not? but rooting for a girl to win? No, may the more talented and popular win as usual…

I doubt they ever thought that Carly would actually win the competition, though they definitely set her up as a major player (Brooke too). More probable, for TPTB, that they switched their horses from more specifically Johns (who never really panned out as an exciting competitor) to Cook once it became clear that the latter was rapidly on the rise.

  23. a female indie-type singer would be good. female indies tend to do reasonably well in the real world & are relevant nowadays. and they haven’t had one graduate w/ top honors from idol yet. they’ll just need to help her with song choices & arrangements during theme weeks, because the indie types tend to not be the belters or the vocal gymnasts.

  24. Randy: I would’ve thought you’d have a trillion Adam Lamberts show up, or a trillion Kris Allens. But that’s not what happened. It was very interesting. This is a whole different bunch.

Interpretation: There weren’t very many good auditions this season. ;)

Well Kris made it right through to the end without being a belter or a vocal gymnast – so a girl could do the same . Hope they have more girls that play instruments as well [ like Brooke in Season 7] – not just the guys!!

  26. “Um Randy, that’s because there arn’t a trillion Adam Lamberts” – thank god for that! I am looking forward to this season more than usual but of the people we have seen so far that may have made it through to hollywood I havn’t seen any I particularly like, girl or boy.

  27. The powers that be can want a girl to win all they want but the American public will pick in the end. Also since they are reverting back to the top 24 we are assured of 5 girls and 5 boys in the top 10 so Im not sure how they are going to assure that a girl is going to win anyway.
I am actually hoping for there to be a girl that I want to root for. It really hasn’t happened since Carrie and Kelly before her. We could sure use another Kelly Clarkson type on American Idol.

The format only guarantees 6 boys and 6 girls in the Top 12. The Top 10 could still be split 6:4.

  29. Actually the last year they did top 24, season 7, they did boys and girls separately til the top 10 if I’m not mistaken.

  30. Actually the last year they did top 24, season 7, they did boys and girls separately til the top 10 if I’m not mistaken.

Nope. Well, two things. Last year was a Top 36. Year prior was a Top 24, but the Top 16 elimination, leading into the Top 12, was the last time the eliminations were respective to gender. Then it was straight to the B3.

  31. A girl only wins if AI captures lightning in a bottle by finding their own Taylor Swift that tweens and teens embrace by their own choice (most important words: BY THEIR OWN CHOICE).

Well, they could make sure that all the guys who make it to Hollywood are just awful. But it would be risky for the show to have that many weak contestants.

A girl only wins if AI captures lightning in a bottle by finding their own Taylor Swift that tweens and teens embrace by their own choice (most important words: BY THEIR OWN CHOICE).

Except for in this case it has to be a singer that middle aged women embrace by their own choice, which is a different set of challenges. For one thing, tweens and teens find Taylor relatable. But it’s going to be harder for a girl under 28 to be found relatable to middle aged women the way Taylor is to tweens and teens.

  33. I am actually hoping for there to be a girl that I want to root for. It really hasn’t happened since Carrie and Kelly before her. We could sure use another Kelly Clarkson type on American Idol.

Amen to that. Fantasia and Jordin were NOT my choices for winner. Taylor Swift is nice enough, but I admired the gutsy performances of Diana DeGarmo, and the talent of Melinda Doolittle. Middle aged woman can embrace the talents of a teenager. Diana was 16 years old. Look at Allison, she was terrific too.

  34. Well Kelly Clarkson really raised the bar from the get go for females, and Carrie is very good too. Loved Fantastia on idol doing old standards, but her new music..meh!. Jordan..so pretty…great voice…,It factor…Not so much.
I loved Melinda but I get that she would not get the tween or teen votes.
I also love Allison, but, unfortunately I think the voters are predominately
Female and are the reason we are not more liberated than we are.Hee!
I think I just segued into a sideline thought.Ha, OH well! diana DeGarmo didn’t even register for me!
So Indie girl Ashley Mekaila(sp?),she certainly, has some potential esp if she
writes some of her songs. I worry that she might just be sweet with little
personality…….I so hope she proves otherwise, for she is gorgeous, and she can sing !!!!

  35. If people wanted a Kelly Clarkson type, wouldn’t Allison have fit the bill?

  36. Allison’s single is definitely not a Kelly Clarkson type song! Allison has a great voice, but her present material is teen & tween, IMO.
