  1. She’s beautiful and her voice has a lovely tone. I even like the guitar work, but the chick CAN’T sing.

  2. the beginning of the song was bad, but when she got to the chorus it sounded nice and she put some life into that peformance.

here’s a big BUT tho…WHYYY does she look so sloppy? I know she likes doing that poofy thing to her hair but it doesn’t look neat, and her face/make-up doesn’t look fresh and IMO…that dress just doesn’t look good on her. You can be COMFORTABLE and still look cute. you know what i mean?

  3. I really wish she would find a reality TV show to host. It’s worked really well for Kimberly Caldwell.

  4. Megan was my favorite last year but that wasn’t even close to good there. Two words: vocal coach

  5. I think this is one of Megan’s best vocals. It shows her growth from where she started and that this is the type of music she could be good in. By no means was it bad.

  6. OMG! Just when you think it’s safe to go to conventions, they start hiring people like Megan to serenade the crowd in her off beat, laughable, tone-deaf style. I would have ran out of that convention, promising myself to never attend another one.

  7. BEAUTIFUL. I’ve been listening to this non-stop since it was posted on youtube a few days ago. It’s nice to see her so relaxed and really rocking those vocals. From 1:25 onward the vocals are seriously breathtaking :) -they’re not ~perfect, but they’re emotive…and I love it.

I agree! out of all the top 13 I think she had the least amount of experience. I think she also has grown tremendously. Is she in top form. NO but I think with the right training she will do well. Oh and yeah she definitely can go the Kimberley Caldwell route and Host something.

The problem is that we keep saying stuff like this about every performance. If a big chunk of your song isn’t good at *every* performance, then you are not yet ready to be a professional. Go home, get coaching, and practice practice practice, because you do not yet belong on a stage.

Anybody who wasn’t as pretty as she is or who wasn’t known and loved by a bunch of people because she’d been on their tv for a long time would get booed, hissed, and tomato-pelted off the stage for giving only half a decent performance very time.

The double standard here that somehow thinks this stuff is acceptable for Megan when it would never ever work for somebody less pretty and not from AI really is ridiculous. No wonder so many musicians hate the show and everything it stands for. Not fair for her to get this kind of a pass. Yeah, she has potential. And with potential you keep practicing before you give public performances. You keep practicing until, just about every time, your *whole* song is acceptable — not just half of it or two thirds of it.

You hit it on the nose, Lucy.

  11. I was willing to give her a pass until they showed her face on the screen and you could tell that she had no idea what she was doing. If you asked her what this song is about -she wouldn’t even know.

    She needs coaching

  12. Here’s my theory: Megan made it to the top 13 because Simon thought he could make an american Adele out of her, with the added bonus that this Adele would be skinny (Note that I didn’t say that this Adele would be pretty, because I believe Adele is pretty. Clearly, however, Adele is not skinny. No hate please, just the messenger).
I believe this because, recently, Simon was asked what he was listening to and, without hesitation, he said Adele. For Simon to single out someone so decisively, he must really like her. So, it seems, Simon likes that vocal style, which I like to call “educated off-key singing.” (c) Me ha ha.
By educated off-key singing I mean making intelligent choices with the notes that, when put together, sound interesting and good at the same time. Listen, for example, to Adele’s “To Make You Feel My Love” and her key on the “you” of the corus.
Back to Megan, during her audition, Simon was strangely enthusiastic about her, even though, I think, it wasn’t that good. So, I think Simon thought Megan could be an Adele-type singer.
Of course, Megan only has the off-key part down. I hope she learns how to make her uniqueness more pleasant, before she looses her fastball.

I think this is right on the money.

Oh please – most of the singers that come out of Idol are far superior vocally to most of the crap out there these days that passes for pop music. Megan will fit right in. See Britney Spears…pretty girl, awful singer, yet huge mega star at that. All Megan needs to do is add a fancy light show and some backup dancers and voila! She can go on tour.

  15. My guess is that if this was an Idol audition, and Simon was blindfolded, he would say it is, “Hideous, like something in a mediocre high school talent show.”

And I would agree. Sorry Megan, but that was awful.

Off-key, yes, and there’s also something pretentious about how she’s pushing the notes out in an effort to sound like Corinne Bailey Rae or just sensual or something, but it just doesn’t work.

  16. Off-key, yes, and there’s also something pretentious about how she’s pushing the notes out in an effort to sound like Corinne Bailey Rae or just sensual or something, but it just doesn’t work.

It doesn’t work because she doesn’t know what she is doing. She has the tools, but not the training.
If she want’s to stay in the music business, she needs to find a voice coach, she needs to practice what she learns there for about 6 months, and then she needs to go follow Chris Sligh advice on how to make a living in the business.

  17. I wonder at people who say she’s wonderful but needs a vocal coach. Hasn’t she had one throughout Idol and the tour? Like I said earlier, her voice has a nice and interesting tone, but if you’re not a singer (which I think it’s obvious she isn’t), no amount of coaching will give you what you need.

  18. Of course, Megan only has the off-key part down. I hope she learns how to make her uniqueness more pleasant, before she looses her fastball.

Seriously…I think that if Adele or Duffy were to sing badly on purpose, they would sound like Megan.

Not crazy about Britney, but whoever writes her music has an amazing knack for catchy tunes. Womanizer is not a “quality” song, but just from hearing a snippet, I knew it would be a hit. She’s also very good onscreen and has an “attitude” in her music videos that does not come naturally to a lot of other performers (including Carrie, who tries very hard in her recent video). Not sure Megan can follow the Britney mold. For starters, she moves around like she’s thrown out a hip. If Megan makes it in the music industry and ends up winning any kind of award other than a Razzie, I will really think the music industry has regressed.

Anyway, Britney aside, I think you’ve really summed up the problem with the music industry in the U.S. Most Idol singers are very good, but Megan sticks out like a sore thumb. Yet, people still think she has huge potential solely based on the fact that she fits the “All-American” sterotype. On the other hand, you have good singers like Melinda or Syesha or Carly who actually need to be impressive to make even slight progress. I think back to season 7 and there was only one female who got signed right away and that was Kristy Lee and she was arguably the worst of the top ten. I think Adele should thank her stars that she was born in England (and I actually do think Adele is very pretty).

  19. It didn’t look like she connected at all with that song. Her facial expressions just didn’t mirror the lyrics of the song. I don’t think you need training or coaching for that! It was an awkward performance and a wasted opportunity for her.

  20. I like Megan Joy. She seems like a sweet, funny, quirky, simple individual with dreams and aspirations and an offbeat voice and personality.

And this video … less than halfway through I thought I was watching a movie trailer about a washed up ingenue singer working a dive bar for tips after one two many bottles took her career potential away.

But there is hope, there is a stranger in town just passing through – a washed up Clint Eastwood type. In Megan he sees how he’s thrown his own life away. It’s too late for him but he decides he will be her saviour. He gets her cleaned up, gets her act together, reunites her with the son that was taken away or walked away… and the rest is musical history.

  21. Some parts were really good and some parts were atrocious. But if you are a singer and you cannot sing the entire song well , you have to really fix it. Otherwise quit singing publicly.

When she is good, she is unique and love her voice. Is there hope here ? Don’t know. It’s up to her to turn around her performance. I used to really love her unique voice and was looking forward to an improvement on her performance.
    Not happening.
