American Idol Audition: Singing Barber Noah Peters gives Colin Stough a trim while they sing Chris Stapleton’s ‘Broken Halos’

Twenty-four year old Noah Peters is the only barber in his small town, Benton, Tennessee, where he runs his own shop. Noah sings while he works, hence town folk know him as “The Singing Barber.”

His customers request songs by Luke Bryan all the time, according to Noah. In fact, Noah went viral on social media with a rendition of “Shake It For Me Girl,” alongside a young customer. He’s become so well known, folks drop by the barber shop just to hear him sing.

“Ever since I was a child I have dreamed of getting a Golden Ticket on American Idol,” Noah stated in a new preview clip of his audition which will air on the Feb 25 episode. “So getting to bring that back and frame it in my barbershop, it would mean the world to me,” Noah added.

In the audition room, Noah sang “I Won’t Let Go” by Rascal Flatts for Luke and his fellow judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.

Surprise! It’s Colin Stough, who dropped by for a trim

After the performance, Katy wondered if Noah felt a little “naked” without his barber set up. She suggested that he’d sing better if he gave a haircut right now. “I definitely would,” Noah answered. Cue two crew members who bring in a golden barber chair. “Let’s shave Lionel’s head!” Katy shouted. Unsurprisingly, neither singer nor judge was up for that.

Next, host Ryan Seacrest walked in with hair cutting supplies and season 21 standout Colin Stough. “We found somebody who could use a cut right now!” Ryan said. “You need a haircut,” Luke joked. Indeed, Colin’s straight golden locks reached the top of his shoulders. But the country singer didn’t want a massive haircut, “just a little bit off the ends, a little bit off the sides.” He added, “I’ve been trying to use some good conditioner!” Colin, a horse lover, joked that he used to use a horse product “Mane and Tail” on his hair.

“This is crazy!” said an obviously intimated Noah. The hopeful was willing to sing and cut if Colin would vocalize with him. The two crooned “Broken Halos” by Chris Stapleton, with the barber adding a little harmony. “I like him!” Colin declared after hearing Noah’s voice. As far as a haircut is concerned, Noah never really gets down to trimming Colin’s hair outside of a few rudimentary snips. Colin jokingly demanded he finish the haircut, because he had shows to play the following weekend.

“I can now put Colin Stough on my client list”

After Colin left the room, Katy remarked, “When I heard you sing, just a little bit of “Broken Halos,” when you were cutting, you were kind of not thinking about it, and it was oozing out of you.” Katy added, “I really want you to visualize that when you sing, that you’re just back at the shop, just giving a trim.” She warned him not to “overthink.” She believes Noah has “some sweetness” to his voice, in addition to “soul” and “purity.” However, she thinks his voice will need a “blunt edge here and there….some chippity chop.”

“Don’t get psyched out,” advised Lionel. “You have a quality in your voice that’s fantastic.” He stressed that Noah needed to relax. “I know that’s hard to say,” said Lionel. “Trust in who you are and what you sound like. You stay true to your lane, and you’ll be on to something.”

All three judges said yes, and Noah was on his way to the Hollywood round. “I can now put Colin Stough on my client list,” said Noah as he clutched his Golden Ticket.

American Idol airs on ABC on Sundays at 8 pm ET/PT and available for streaming next day on Hulu.
