Kelly Clarkson praised Demi Lovato for opening up about mental health. The American Idol OG winner and The Voice coach confessed her own battles with depression in a recent The Kelly Clarkson Show episode.
Kelly on Demi’s frank discussion of mental health: “I have similar issues”
“I love how open you are about mental health because I have similar issues and I’ve suffered from depression,” Kelly shared in her interview with the pop star are former X Factor USA judge. “I think a lot of people, especially in the creative world, or just from childhood, have been trained to just keep going… especially as a woman.”

Kelly added, “I just love that you’re open about that because not everybody’s as vulnerable at being like that.” Fans appreciate it too, Kelly said, adding that she gets fans at meet and greets thanking her for being so open, and that Demi probably does too. “..and they’re like…I felt like this was just me and…knowing that somebody else is going through it makes you not feel alone and so depressed about it.”
Demi on Kelly: “You were the first Idol that I ever had.”
Demi returned the compliment, revealing that Kelly was her role model growing up. “You were the first Idol that I ever had,” Demi said. “I wouldn’t be the artist or even the person that I am with being so outspoken and vulnerable and fearless if I hadn’t had you to look up to. So I thank you for that.”
Kelly was blushing at this point, but Demi continued. “You are fearless and courageous and real…I love you and…when I was younger, I always thought to myself if I ever make it I want to be like her because she’s real and she’s genuine.”
Kelly stressed that she’s not all those things all the time. It takes daily work to keep a positive attitude and stay mentally healthy. “I think that that’s a daily thing that you work at and a daily thing that I work at.”
