HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Aug 25-31

With Monday being a holiday, we will get the entire HDD report today. Their “weakend” report has Ariana Grande topping the chart. This will be her second chart topper in a year. Her previous album debuted the week of September 2nd (this one was released August 25th) and sold 138K. The predictions for her newest album is 150-170K. Some expected her to sell more this time around since she is all over the singles charts (3 top 10 singles so far), but many of these female pop stars tend to sell a lot of singles and not many albums. Still 150-170K is a very good start.

Way, way, way back in second (so far back we may need to use a spotting scope) is Brad Paisley. What happened to the guy who sells out concerts on his near perma-tours? Interstingly, this will be his 9th top 10 album, but he’s never topped the BB200 chart. Obviously, he’s topped the Country album chart and will do so again this week. His previous album, “Wheelhouse” was released in 2013, sold 100K and ended up in the same spot.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” topped the box-office this weekend (and became the summer’s biggest hit – in a pretty dismal year) and it looks like the Soundtrack is proving it has legs too. The “Awesome Mix” is destined for third on the charts. Kem (R&B) is debuting in fourth, Sam Smith is 5th (looks like he was blocked from hitting the top of the Hot 100 this time around), Whiz Khalifa’s (last week’s number 1) is 6th this week, Now 51 (featuring a track that features X-Factorer Cher Lloyd) is 7th, Avenged Sevenfold (Rock) is 8th, Frozen Soundtrack (ever-present) is 9th and the new One Directioners 5 Seconds to Summer round out the top 10.

1. Ariana Grande (Republic) 150-170k
2. Brad Paisley (Arista Nashville) 48-53k
3. Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix, Vol. 1 (Hollywood) 45-50k
4. KEM (Motown) 45-50k
5. Sam Smith (Capitol) 28-32k
6. Wiz Khalifa (Atlantic) 23-26k
7. Now 51 (NOW) 23-26k
8. Avenged Sevenfold (Hopeless) 23-26k
9. Frozen (Walt Disney) 21-24k
10. 5 Seconds of Summer (Capitol) 19-22k
11. Chase Rice (Dack Janiels/Thirty Tigers/Columbia Nashville) 15-17k
12. Ed Sheeran (Atlantic) 15-17k
13. Iggy Azalea (Grand Hustle/Def Jam) 13-15k
14. G-Unit (G-Unit) 12-14k
15. Steffany Gretzinger (Bethel Music) 12-14k
16. Luke Bryan (Capitol Nashville) 12-14k
17. Beyoncé (Columbia) 12-14k
18. Thousand Foot Krutch (TFK) 11-13k

  1. Kris’ album got a nice boost on iTunes today. It was out of the Top 1500 the last couple of days, but today it is at #693.

  2. I think in the long run it might outsell Caleb’s. I think it’s a pretty good album.

  4. ooh, Kris’ album moved up even more since my post. yay :)

Is Pentatonix’s song La La Latch a cover of the Disclosure/Sam Smith single? Or an original? (lol, I should probably go listen…then I could answer by own question)

  6. I don’t think I-Tunes sales, once out of the top 10, tell us much about how an album is selling, overall, since the ranking is based on how many albums are selling at a particular time in some obscure space continuum. I find I-tunes sales more mind perplexing than an actual barometer of numbers…and without brick and mortar sales to back up an albums numbers they become even more meaningless. And this holds true for everyone, not just Kris.

  7. It would be nice to see Scotty move up a couple more notches so he would be included on the top 25 single countdowns on the weekend. That would give him a lot more spins and some more oomph.

  8. It does say that someone(s) is buying the album or it wouldn’t be on the chart.

  9. I’m surprised KEM sold that much. I kinda forgot he existed.
I’m a little surprised by Ariana Grande but not really. Pop girls tend to debut low but I always thought she had a big rabid fanbase, so I thought she might be an exception. Still that’s not bad, and she’ll do fine in the long run.

  10. These were the HDD predictions. Due to the holiday, HDD hasn’t reported any sales yet. It’s possible these artists will sell above or below those predictions.

  11. Obviously, being in the 500s on iTunes isn’t going to make a lot of money for any artist, but it’s still better than not being on the chart at all. And maybe it’s a sign that he’s getting some word of mouth about the album. Who knows? I’m just happy to see it back on the chart. Hopefully it will stay on there for awhile. :)

  12. I remember being surprised how low Carly Rae Jepsen’s album sales were, given that Call Me Maybe was such a huge hit. Arianna’s sales look like they are going to be much better than CRJ’s, so she will be fine.

  13. Looks like Phillip’s single is beginning to pick up a little momentum on AAA now. Will be interesting to see if it really starts to take off once it gets into the Top 30.

  14. I just looked at his AAA numbers… only 96 spins and you’re on the chart. How many total stations are there? Looking at the AI, there can’t be that many people listening.

  15. AAA is a tiny format, but part of the reason for a low spin count to be on the chart is the widely diverse playlists. AAA is the musichead format and sells albums above its weight class.

That’s why there was talk back in 2010 of “why isn’t Cook pitched to AAA?” It’s a great home format to build a loyal audience for singer/songwriters, but it doesn’t yield really massive sales unless a song goes to the top of the chart and then crosses to a larger format like HAC or CHR. When the “put yo hands in the air” trend was pushed aside by folk rock, Gotye, and later Lorde, those were exported AAA successes.

Interscope also obviously wants the big bucks from crossover on P2, but they did right by him as a musician by positioning him with a home format that’s less fickle than HAC.

  16. There is a 3M AI break in the chart between 27th and 26th. It may take Scotty a bit of time to chug his way up to 25th. A big week of re-currents might help.

25th on the chart has about double the AI as 30th (7.787 to 15.439 – 20th has an AI of 24.771).

Unlike many other charts which just rely on spin-counts, the Country chart depends on a formula consisting of spins, AI and some kind of voodoo (sometimes songs with fewer spins and lower AI end up ahead of songs with more spins and higher AI – reasons unknown).

  17. AAA is the musichead format and sells albums above its weight class.

Agreed. AAA is a monster for selling albums above its weight class.

  18. AAA is a really small format. The #1 song right now has about 2.5 AI. Not kidding. There are about 40 monitored stations on AAA.

  19. There is no Top 25 countdown in country music. There are a few competing countdowns and they do either Top 30 or Top 40. He’s been getting countdown spins for months now.

  20. If it sells more than ~25K overall, then it probably could. And that might happen with Kris’s touring.

  21. The stations have point factors assigned to them. Therefore getting lots of spins on those higher weighted stations helps. Personally I think it is a lot easier for labels to manipulate the charts.
I’ve listed some of the heavier weighted stations with their points below. Each spin is not considered equal lol:
    10.0 KKBQ Houston
    8.7 KPLX Dallas
    8.6 KKGO Los Angeles
    8.2 WKLB Boston
    8.1 WUSN Chicago
    8.0 Westwood 1 Mainstream Country

But ptebwwong can explain it better.

  22. Miley Cyrus put out an album less than a year ago (Oct. 2013) and had first week of sales of 270k. So, I ‘d say Ariana Grande is under-performing.

ETA: KEM has the #1 song on UAC, plus another 2-3 of his songs charting simultaneously.

  24. Yeah, but as girlygirl pointed out Carly Rae Jepsen’s were even lower, and I remember Bruno Mars’ first album opening with 55K or something like that despite having 3 huge singles. So she’s in range. I think in the long run she’ll be fine.

And as far as KEM, well that explains it! LOL. I have probably been hearing his songs then and not realizing that was him.

  25. KA will need either a major promo catalyst or incredible tour sales (large venues, high take rate) to catch up with Johnson’s first-week sales within the next year. It’s not impossible, but he’s not on track for it to happen right now, either.

  26. Opening at #1 with 150 to 170 seems like a good solid number to me. For context does anyone remember what Kelly and Carrie opened with on their last albums? (Not Christmas) I think Carrie was over 200 but I’m not sure. But with this market 150 seems a number that most artists would be happy with.

  27. The PTX song is a “Sam Smith mashup” according to the video. It’s a mashup of “La La La” and “Latch”.

  28. I don’t understand those comparisons. Ariana’s competition isn’t Carrie and Kelly. It’s Miley, Katy Perry, Lorde, Gaga.

  29. I don’t think I said anything about who her competition was. I just asked a question. Was wondering why her numbers were considered low. Do you know what the numbers were for Kelly or Carrie?

  30. All stations have points assigned to them. This is updated for the country genre twice a year. Stations with a higher weight is due to their market share. This means for a single to keep going up the charts it would need the heavily weighted stations.

  31. Carrie’s last album, Blown Away had 1st week sales of 267,000. Kelly’s 1st week sales of her last album was 70,000. This was her Christmas album. If you’re talking about a “regular” album, Stronger opened with 163,000 sold.

  32. Thanks. Yes I was talking about Kelly’s Stronger. Very good numbers for both Kelly and Carrie.

  33. IIRC Carrie’s last album came out in May 2012 and she opened with something in the mid/ high 200ksrange; Kelly’s last pop album came out at the end of Oct 2011 and opened in the high mid 100s (I don’t know why 160Kish sticks in my mind..easy to google)…..Ariana’s numbers are very solid, but I expected them to be higher given that she has been EVERYWHERE since the spring and has 3 songs currently in heavy rotation on the radio….but shes selling boatloads of singles as well so all is good

  34. I said they were under-performing numbers because her competition as pop music queen outsold her current predictions by 100k, just less than a year ago.

Miley and Katy both put out album in Oct. 2013 and they sold 270k and 286k, respectively.

Even with declining album sales, anything under 200k has to be disappointing to the label.

  35. Shouldn’t the market share numbers be captured by audience impression? Why do they need further weighting?

  36. Kris’s third album is the best of the three, and it deserves to sell much better than it has been. Maybe he’ll get a big bump after the Yahoo streaming.

  37. For Mediabase, points are what matters. Points are calculated from station weights which are from a station’s market size. Audience impression (AI) is what matters for Billboard.

  38. The album is moving less than a 1000 copies in the 600 range, but it is a good sign for Kris, since it could point to his recent college shows resulting in people buying the album. He’d need a bigger audience in order to sell more albums.

  39. I think that giving the number of people that Kris had been averaging at his shows, that figure is too high.

  40. Less than 1000? Probably less than 100!

On the singles chart, anything past #200 is selling under 1000 copies. On the album chart, it’s got to be much smaller.

  41. Agree, Ariana’s numbers are solid. But I suspect when the newest declared “pop princess,” Taylor, releases she will be top dog over everyone if she comes anywhere near the 1mil that she had last two albums.

  42. Carly Rae Jepsen didn’t sell 138K first week copies BEFORE launching a legitimate radio hit.

That’s what people are forgetting. We know Ariana has a built-in audience of 138K who were willing to buy the album just because it’s an Ariana Grande album.

She’s now a legitimate pop star but somehow can’t find more than 20-30K new people to buy her record?

  44. No, both Call Me Maybe and the song with Owl City were out before her album dropped in the US.

In any case, do we have a final estimate from HDD yet?

  45. Country monitored adds are 100% in:

4 LUCY HALE Lie A Little Better DMG Nashville/In2une 45
3 TRISHA YEARWOOD PrizeFighter f/Kelly Clarkson RCA Nashville 3
1 GWEN SEBASTIAN Small Town Soul Flying Island 1
1 RAELYNN God Made Girls Valory 94
    1 SCOTTY MCCREERY Feelin’ It 19/Interscope/Mercury 136

Brad Paisley leads with 72 adds.

  46. I doubt it’s quite that few. There are 1500 albums on the iTunes chart. If an album at #600 is selling less than 100, wouldn’t the album at #1500 being selling negative copies? :)

Kris’ album is still moving up iTunes, is at #476 now

  47. With the amount of money Republic Records has been investing in the Ariana Grande project you would think the release would be way over 200K. For their sake they better be able to make money on the tour and merchandising.

  48. if it was less than 100 then many albums would probably be tied for the same position. I know I buy random albums all the time

  49. Miley did a great job of making her campaign all about her album. Different covers, packaging the albums with stickers, lots of guests, performing all of the songs in TV specials. Even though she only released three singles (and two that had any traction) her tour sold out and her album sailed past platinum. She’s an albums artist, Ariana’s a singles artist

  50. I think that Republic is okay. This is a good figure for a relatively new artist, or any artist. Ariana has also shown that she can get airplay, so the album should have legs.

  51. I’m sure that in the bottom part of the chart MANY albums are tied in sales. I believe that iTunes uses an algorithm to rank equally selling albums (and songs) based on momentum.

  52. Oh…I guess the syndicated top hits show I listen to on my local station as I drive home from the casino on Saturday or Sunday morning isn’t, apparently, a major countdown show though I really thought it was. Last week they had Brad Paisley as the guest and highlighted the top 25. Must have been “hearing” things.

  53. If an album at #600 is selling less than 100, wouldn’t the album at #1500 being selling negative copies? :)

No, because there isn’t necessarily a one-sale difference from position to position.

AmyBeth is correct: iTunes’ super-sekrit algorithm includes momentum, so it’s possible for an album to be selling less than a lower-ranked album if it just had a sudden sales surge, while the other album sells steadily. It’s also definitely possible to have ties in actual sales over the period.

Also, some of the albums on the top 1500 may have had no sales over the most recent rolling period, but their last sales are more recent than those of albums not on the chart at all.

It’s one of those things where, if you set it up in the computer, it whizzes along happily, but if you try to do it in your head, your brain will explode.

  54. But is the “time frame” for I-tunes based on every second, or every minute, or once a day…who knows. If someone is “selling” 5 albums a day and that is the 600th best seller that doesn’t say a lot about its selling power. The chart is nice for “comparisons” between albums (over some undetermined time frame) but absolutely nothing else.
