HDD – Album Sales Prediction – Dec 27-Jan 2

Christmas is over. Gone are the Christmas CDs that crowded the chart, but so too are the amazing sales that precede Christmas. With SuBo’s Christmas album gone from the chart, Taylor Swift cruises to an easy victory. With 54% of the market reporting, Taylor has 54K in sales. With the more country-centric vendors reporting the first day, we may not see anybody sell more than 100K this week. And next week will be even worse.

Nicki Minaj continues to have a strong release with “Pink Friday” coming in a distant second. Rihanna always tends to do better with her singles, but is trucking along in the number three spot. Keyshia released her latest album a few days before Christmas and it continues in 4th place into its second week. Eminem rounds out the top 5 with his album which was the highest selling album of 2010. Keri Hilson and Jamie Foxx (Idol mentor for S8 and S9) also released albums Christmas week and it is sitting at number 6 and 7 respectively.

On the Idol front, the sole solo Idol is Crystal Bowersox. In her third week of release, she’s clinging to the chart at 49th. Her debut single will be going for adds next week which could help to support sales into the new year.

As for Idols appearing on other albums, there are four of them. First up is Kelly Clarkson on Jason Aldean’s resilient Album “My Kinda Party” at number 10. It was released on November 2, 2010 making it the third oldest album in the top 10 (only Taylor’s and Eminem’s albums are older). Kelly’s song on that album is one of his current singles (his lead single is at 3 and this duet is at 22), meaning that it is helping to drive these sales.

At number 12 on the chart is the latest NOW album, 36! It features a song by each of Daughtry and Adam Lambert. The final Idol on the chart is Jordin Sparks who has a song on the Big Time Rush album currently at 44.

Numbers after the jump.

For your consideration, here is an interesting interview I read with Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. He talks about being on an Indie Label, how to promote yourself and how the industry has changed. He brings up an interesting discussion about how we are no longer a monoculture and so it’s both harder and easier for bands to get their music out there. Here is the article from EW.

This is the daily numbers thread. The best thread of your life.
