FOX has decided not to order more episodes of freshman Red Band Society beyond the original 13 episode order. Production is set to wrap in mid-December.
The news should come as no surprise, as the teen drama, set in a Children’s hospital, and co-starring X Factor alum Astro was nowhere to be found on the recently released FOX midseason schedule.
The show hasn’t been “officially” cancelled yet. But if you are a fan, I’d begin withdrawing now. It’s highly HIGHLY unlikely the low-rated show will be renewed for a second season.
The show, which also stars Octavia Spencer, will air two more episodes (Episode 9) and Wednesday’s fall finale (Episode 10) December 3, before leaving the schedule.
FOX has not announced where or when the last 3 episodes will air.
Red Band Society had a ton of buzz as it entered the fall season, but it got off to a slow start. Most recently, the show averaged a 0.9 rating in adults 18-49 in the last few weeks. It gained audience in time-shifted and digital viewing, rising more than +100% in 30-day multi-platform ratings and did OK in teens.
FOX continues to struggle in the ratings. It’s $50 million reality bid, Utopia, flopped out of the gate, it’s year-long initial commitment cut short after only a few months. The only new Fox series this fall to get a back nine order was the break0ut drama, Gotham. Freshman comedy Mulaney is riding out it’s initial 13 week order at 7:30 on Sundays.
