Derek Hough posts an encouraging update on his wife Hayley’s progress after a life-threatening brain bleed

Derek Hough posted another update on his wife Hayley Erbert Hough who suffered a sudden brain bleed after performing on their tour in Washington DC earlier this month. The encouraging update is posted alongside a video of Derek holding Hayley’s hand as she walks up the Washington Mall. She’s wearing a helmet post-surgery, but otherwise seems steady on her feet.

“As you all know, the past week has been a challenging journey for us due to a life-threatening event that suddenly came into our lives,” The Dancing with the Stars judge wrote. “It was a time filled with uncertainty and fear, going from living our dreams onstage, to a nightmare in an instant. But today, we are filled with hope and relief as we share with you an update.”

“Hayley is doing well,” Derek writes.

Hayley needs another surgery to close up her skull

Derek continued, “Her recovery process has been nothing short of a miracle,” adding, “She still has a ways to go with another surgery, hopefully in a few weeks, to insert a skull implant to replace the piece that was removed during the craniectomy. It will restore the skull to its natural shape and protect the brain from injury.”

“Thank you for the incredible support and medical care she has received,” Derek wrote. A hospital in Washington D.C. where the health event occurred has been treating her. “It’s been a profound reminder of how fragile life can be and how quickly things can change. But, it has also shown us the incredible strength and resilience that lies within us and the power of having a supportive community around us.”

“We cannot express enough gratitude to each of you for your unwavering support, messages, prayers and undeniable loving energy we have both felt during this time.”

As Derek said, life can change in a blink of an eye. “While this isn’t the holiday season either of us envisioned, it’s one that we’re incredibly grateful to have. We look forward to cherishing these moments with a deeper appreciation for life and the people in it.” He signed the message, “We love you all. With heartfelt thanks, Hayley and Derek.”

Hayley underwent a craniectomy after a life threatening brain bleed

The two professional ballroom dancers were in the midst of their Symphony of Dance tour. After a performance in Washington D.C. on Dec 6, Hayley became ill and had to be rushed to the hospital where she was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma and subsequently underwent a craniectomy.

Derek wrote on Instagram, “At the end of last night’s tour performance in Washington D.C., My wife Hayley became disoriented and was taken to the hospital.” He continued, “She was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel and required an emergency craniotomy. She is in stable condition.”

“Hayley…is now on the long road of recovery”

The next day, Derek posted an Instagram update on Hayley’s condition.

“Haley has always inspired me with her will, her strength and her resilience and no more so than in the last 48 hrs. She is now on the long road of recovery,” he wrote. “Words cannot express how grateful and thankful we are for the support and love that you have given us. The kindness that we’ve been shown in this incredibly unfathomable and life changing time is immeasurable.”

Needless to say, the Symphony of Dance Tour, which had dates scheduled through the end of the month has been postponed.

The couple tied the knot in August

Derek and Haley tied the knot in August in a beautiful ceremony that took place in a Monterey Country California redwood forest.

Days before the marriage ceremony, Derek released a song, “Hold Back Time,” dedicated to Hayley and their life together. “I sat down at the piano, thinking about our relationship and the massive step of committing my life to you,” Derek wrote on Instagram. “The amount of life we have already shared is pretty incredible. This video is a just a tiny snippet of what we’ve already experienced. Life seems to be moving so fast, I want to hold back time as much as I possibly can to savor each and every moment with you. I can’t wait to continue building memories and a beautiful life with you, together.”
