Barbershop Rehab? Just No No No…

I thought you guys would get a kick out of this. It’s the barbershop moms, Maxx Factor, from last night’s The Sing Off.

For the “guilty pleasure” round, they picked “Rehab”.

The Amy Winehouse tune is pretty cool. I don’t know how it’s classified as a “Guilty Pleasure”–a song so uncool you’d be embarrassed to admit liking it. Maybe in their knitting circle, “Rehab” is a No No No…

Anyway, I found their rendition pretty…hilarious. And so did awesome judge, Ben Folds. Check it out after the jump.

Video after the JUMP…

  1. I was thinking the same thing – “Rehab” isn’t a guilty pleasure. If anything, it’s probably going to be one of very songs in this era that becomes a classic. Amy Winehouse Tabloid? That’s another story.

  2. I hated that they got thru, the other group should have. I didnt like their Barbershop singing. I also love Ben Folds, where did he come from? In fact I like all three judges. I think the group from PR, I think thats where they are from will win. I just dont remember the groups names.

  3. Yeah, I found it pretty L.O.L. too!! I really like the Beelzebubs…I hope they win it!!

They’re called Nota, and, ITA, they blow everyone else out of the water.

It was a crime that Max Factor stayed instead of the girls who sang Viva La Vida. Max Factor just isn’t flexible enough with their voices/arrangements to make modern songs enjoyable. Doesn’t Amy Winehouse have enough wrong in her life without also having her songs butchered by a heavy-handed barbershop quartet? But, they’ll probably make it through again tonight, as the token group of grown ups among the kids.

I’m enjoying the show, overall, but then, I’ve always enjoyed cool a capella groups.

  6. Miss Chaos the group was Noteworthy and they were far better than the Sweet Adelines Max Factor. After last night I now totally understand that viewers of “reality” contest shows are at the mercy of producers. It’s never necessarily the best but what they want. In this case quirk over quality. I really feel bad for the Noteworthy gals. I will keep watching though because as a New Englander, I am rooting for the ‘Bubs.

  7. I’ve always wondered if people listen to themselves singing certain songs before they appear on tv. They couldn’t have thought that this sounded good.

  8. They’re called Nota, and, ITA, they blow everyone else out of the water.

I watched last night for the first time, and that’s what I thought too. In fact, I was thinking that clearly they have to be the winner, because most of the other groups kind of suck.

I was surprised that the Rehab ladies stayed as well. I thought that was freakin’ awful.

Also, I love Shawn. I was a pretty big Boyz to Men fan back in the day, but I think this is the first time I’ve ever really heard him speak for any significant amount of time. His judging skills are impressive here.

I need to go to rehab after watching this.

…meet you there…although, after that, we may need reservations.

  10. Ben Folds Five recording of Brick was very, very popular a few years back. Go to youtube but don’t listen more than once or it will haunt you. I am guessing he doesn’t play as the Ben Folds Five anymore but I don’t know, just guessing. And heck, maybe it wasn’t even that popular but I loved it.
‘ She’s a brick and I’m drowning slowly’, really good song.

….MJ, you kill me! I know some of us are more familiar w/ your reprimanding role, but honestly, you had to have been all smiles when you wrote that one.

Ben Folds has been really popular in Australia [ maybe because he married an Australian & lived here for a while – unfortunately he’s no longer married!!]
I just love his style & songs . He started off as Ben Folds 5 but then became solo- so just Ben Folds!!Being a pianist myself I am always partial to singers who play the piano in their songs!!
Have a listen to some of his songs – they are brilliant- he’s a modern day poet like Bob Dylan only Ben sings his songs better than Bob!!

I say good on The Max Factor for having a go. Their main problem I think is that the 2 ladies with the lower voices dominate & the 2 ladies with the higher voices are weaker – it should blend together but it doesn’t!!

  13. Disclaimer- I live north of where the Noteworthy girls are from and my whole family has at least one of our degrees from their university or is currently working on a degree there.

Given that, I told my husband from the beginning that my fear for Noteworthy was that it is hard to have the wide range that an all male group or a mixed group has.

I thought the comments on the first night about it being shrill were dead on, although it was good. The second time they sang was a marked improvement. One very interesting thing I noticed when they sang their 2nd song last night was the depth they have in their singers. They had several girls sing the lead very well. Last night, they were very good, although I have always felt that they would not win.

Nota is fantastic and look like the best choice for winning. Their lead singer is INCREDIBLE, and it is amazing that they can do a variety of songs very well, as well as put their own style in it. The Bubs are very entertaining but their vocal skills are lacking- not horrible, but not great like the Bubs.

It was interesting to me that Socal was VERY pitchy last night and nothing was said about it. Max Factor was all kinds of not right, but glowing remarks were made about them. Give me a break.

I guess I should get used to manipulation in these reality contests, but Noteworthy should not have been sent home last night.

    I haven’t watched tonight’s show yet.

  14. I kinda like the Bubs…. something about them. Although I’m not sure I’m into this kind of singing.

  15. The Bubs are very entertaining but their vocal skills are lacking- not horrible, but not great like the Bubs.

Correcting my post upthread. I meant to say, “not great like Nota”.

  16. I don’t get it either why the commenters are so hard on these women. They do not sound bad. Middle-aged women just get the shaft in our society, especially when three of them are overweight.

It is really hard to sing acapella & stay in tune- let alone harmonise together & these “Mums” do that well!!
I looked at some of the videos & it looks like some groups are sacrificing voice for their movements.
Those that can get both spot on, should be the ones that win!!

I am both FAT and MIDDLE-AGED. Bad singing is bad singing. Period.

  19. No, no, no!!!. Nice ladies and I admire their spunk and their bravery for “Rehab”!!……,But this was just not up to the intent. It was not that relevant to 4 middle lifers. So, yeah, maybe they drink to get up in the courage to put themselves out there…Relevant…OK!! Nota is the best,….. but,I kinda liked Beezelbub( backslider Christians??) Very demonic!!!Hee!

  20. All the groups have been good, including Max Factor. I thought it was cute and brave of them to do Rehab, and their harmonies are lovely but just too old-fashioned. They have guts though to keep trying. Good that they went home last night, it was time.

I don’t like the Lee group, have thought they should go home from the start. Noteworthy was better I thought and shouldn’t have gone home yet.

Clearly it should come down to NOTA and the Bubs, they are by far the best night after night, and NOTA should win imo because they are more commercial and viable as a group. The Bubs are such a large group, very entertaining but how serious are their goals as a singing group after they graduate college? NOTA is hungry, ambitious, ready, and they are so cute and charming, and the best singers/arrangers.

I give all the groups kudos though, including the inner-city urban one the first night that had only been together a few weeks and were so desperate, I hope they don’t give up. The judges are good too, though I fast forward through Nicole more often than not, she’s a mix of Paula and Randy, too many cliches and too much sentimentality. Ben Folds is great, but so is Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men, Folds gets all the press it seems, but Shawn is every bit as good of a judge if not better.

Videos can be seen here http://www.nbc.com/sing-off/ and people can vote until Sunday morning I think. You can vote 10 times per email address online, and also by phone (don’t know how many times). On Monday night’s finale, Boyz II Men will perform, and others, I forget who.

  21. I am both FAT and MIDDLE-AGED. Bad singing is bad singing. Period.

LMAO. I’m a little chubby, and on the fast track to 40, is it okay for me to say that these ladies suck? :)

Also, their outfits are kind of ridiculous. Anyone with a few extra pounds knows that the last thing you want to wear on TV is anything shiny and gold, especially if it’s cut to stop exactly at your gut.

  22. LOL, they look like they should be pointing out the exits and demonstrating the way your seat can act as a floating device.

I caught this show for the first time last night. I liked the Who medley, and Ben Folds admitting he didn’t really give a crap about Michael Jackson’s version of MITM. LMAO.

  23. When listening to MITM last night all I could think was Kris Allen’s versio that he’s performed a couple of times now pwned theirs – like completely.

  24. They did really look too old fashioned to be taken seriously. It reminded me of The Lawrence Welk Show performances.
I also have a question regarding judge Stockman’s comment
about changing their name to ” Cougarville “. Is every
woman over the age of 40 considered a cougar ? I thought that was a derogatory term for older women chasing after younger men, but I keep seeing it referenced otherwise.
