Chris Daughtry is not only a talented singer and musician, but the American Idol season 5 alum is also a gifted artist. His latest work is a variant cover for Marvel’s upcoming Red Goblin: Red Death #1. Chris teamed up artist Ron Garvey, who is a “famous name in Marvel Comics” according to the official announcement.
Garvey is known for his interior and cover at on books including Amazing Spider Man, Daredevil, Captain America and more. He writes comics as well.
Meanwhile, Chris has been “honing his artistic skills for years,” according to the official announcement from Marvel. The lifelong comic book fan cites Stan Lee and Steve Ditko as inspirations. Working on the variant cover for Red Goblin Red Death #1 “fulfills a long-time dream.”
“I grew up watching the Spider-Man and Friends cartoons as a kid and was always drawn to the bright colors of the costumes of Spider-Man and Green Goblin,” Chris said in a the official statement. “It’s beyond a dream come true to be able to collaborate with Marvel and Ron Garney to draw these classic and iconic characters in all their technicolor glory.”
“So pumped to finally share this!!!” Chris wrote on Instagram along with the artwork.”Was so fun to draw these iconic characters in their classic suits and an honor to collaborate with @rongarneyart on this piece!!! Gonna post original pencils soon….”
The wrap-around variant cover, which will be one of several for the single issue–features Spider-Man being chased by the Goblin.
It’s not the first time Chris has written for a major comic book franchise. In 2016 Chris created a Batman vs Superman cover for Batman #50 for DC Comics.
Look for Red Goblin Red Death #1, written by Pat Gleason, Rob Fee, and Sean Ryan with art by Pete Woods and a variant cover by Chris Daughtry and Ron Garney, coming in October.
