An American Idol 13 Hollywood contestant had her day in court yesterday, during a preliminary hearing for Levandis Gray at the Saginaw County Courthouse in Saginaw Michigan. Gray struck 20 year old Sikenya Thompson with his motorcycle during a parade on June 27.
Sikenya cried twice. Once was when a prosecutor asked her to describe the long lasting effects of being struck by a speeding motorcyclist as she danced in a downtown Saginaw parade, and the other was when she saw a graphic video of the crash for the first time.
An 11 year old bystander took the footage on his phone. It is pretty graphic, and shocking. The motorcycle speeds past the group of young women, clocking Sikenya hard. after the motorcycle his Sikenya, it dragged Gray before striking another car and came to a stop, according to an eyewitnesses testifying at the hearing.
Gray is charged with reckless driving causing serious impairment of a body function. Based on testimony from Thompson and the coach of her dance group, the judge, Kyle Higgs Tarrant, ruled probable cause exists for Gray to stand trial on the charge, which is a felony that carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
Sikenya suffered two broken ribs, gashes on her legs, foot and chin, and a chipped tooth. She was hospitalized for five days. She still walks with a limp.
“It’s hard for me to look at myself now, because I feel like I lost confidence in myself,” she said, noting the scars on her body. “The only thing I do is cover up now.”
Sikenya was planning on going to modeling school. “I don’t even get my hair done anymore,” she said. “Even though it looks like I’m OK, I’m not OK.”
The singer was eliminated during the American Idol 13 Hollywood Round. She got a mention in a couple of live blogs from the show HERE and HERE, but we don’t have any video of her at the moment. She got sick at one point, needed a pep talk from judge Harry Connick Jr. Her group had to scramble to find a replacement after she lost her voice.
