American Idol 2018 Hollywood Week kicked off with a bang Monday night (March 26) with a slew of impressive performances. The singers took front and center in the first episode, featured in solos and group performances.

American Idol 2018 Recap – Hollywood Week 1 Live Blog (VIDEOS)

There wasn’t a ton of drama on display. We saw twins Milo and Julian Sposito audition in the same “line of 10” only to have Milo advance and Julian eliminated. That’s a typical Idol Hollywood trope! But the brothers hugged it out, and moved on.  A little later in the group round, Milo displayed some diva tendencies, with a side of stage mom. But his fellow group members handled the situation maturely. The group performs well and everyone moves on.

The episode ended with the show turning the Mean Girl stereotype on its head. When karaoke singer Crystal Alicia struggles to learn her parts, instead of turning on her, the group rally round and help. The moment was ALMOST ruined when judge Katy Perry claimed there were only three spots left. One of the girls would have to volunteer to leave the competition (WHAT?!?). Crystal offers herself as tribute, as the others stand by stoically. I don’t know about you–but in that instance I wouldn’t be throwing my chance of a lifetime away for anything. And it wouldn’t be a selfish thing!

As the girl who struggled, Crystal probably figured it was only fair that she leave. But then Katy’s all HA HA KIDDING YOU’RE ALL GOING THROUGH. Ugh. Katy claims she was testing the group’s “girl power.” But putting them all in an awkward position? OK then. Dumb producer stunts are dumb. In any case, it was a happy ending nevertheless.

There were TOO MANY great performances to count. Singers who didn’t impress me in the audition rounds, finally caught my attention. My favorites: Alyssa Ragu, Noah Davis, Catie Turner, Jurnee, Dennis Lorenzo continued to be great. Newly impressed by Jonny Brenns, Cade Foehner, and Maddie Pope.

It’s gonna be a good season of American Idol. I can feel it. Next week: On Sunday, Hollywood Week ends with more solos before the group is whittled down to 50. On Monday, the remaining contestants perform in the showcase round, and the Top 24 is revealed!  If you love SPOILERS. We got that! But please, keep discussion confined to the links. Some folks love surprises.
