Jaelen Johnston had a success story like no other during Season 27 of The Voice. Despite being eliminated during the Playoffs, Johnston’s sultry country voice lured coach Kelsea Ballerini back in and ultimately wound up taking home the title of runner-up.

7. “What Was I Thinkin'” by Dierks Bentley – Finale

Sure, Johnston had a classic live TV moment during this finale performance, but he made up for it with the rest of this fun country song.

Johnston offered up a different side of his voice for this upbeat country tune, throwing in some scratchy high notes and unexpected falsetto moments.

Johnston almost got a little bluesy with his rendition of “Cold” by Chris Stapleton during the finale, which helped name him the runner-up of Season 27.

Johnston instantly wowed the coaches with his deep twang during his Blind Audition, earning him a chair turn from every coach but John Legend. After being an artist she practically begged for, Johnston inevitably chose Team Kelsea.

There’s something special about Johnston and country ballads, and his Playoffs performance of “If You’re Reading This” by Tim McGraw is another prime example. Somehow, this was the performance that got Johnston initially eliminated.

Johnston’s performance of “I Drive Your Truck” by Lee Brice came from a personal place. Dedicated to the teen cousin he lost in a truck accident, Johnston kept it raw and emotional after being brought back to the competition by his coach. And that final note at the end could have won the entire thing.
