During last night’s (Nov 11) CMA Awards on ABC, the network aired a country themed promo featuring Carrie Underwood and Gabby Barrett. Both singers competed on American Idol, and both were up for CMA awards. The point of the promo? Fifteen years ago, Carrie was a young hopeful, as was Gabby 3 years ago. Now, both are nominated for country music awards! Who will be the next country star to come off of the show?
Carrie won American Idol in 2005, and has since become one of the reigning queens of country music. Gabby finished third in 2018. Her first single, “I Hope,” a song she co-wrote found massive crossover success this year. Unfortunately, neither singer won in their categories last night (Click for a full list of winners). But that doesn’t take the shine off of their successes. Indeed, Carrie already has a shelf full of Grammys, CMAs and ACMs. But finally winning that Entertainer of the Year Award would have been nice!

The clip ends with a glimpse of three hopefuls. The judges, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan recently auditioned singers in several locations in California. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, production couldn’t travel to cities across the country as American Idol has done in the past.
Next up: The Hollywood Round. With a ton of social distancing, of course.
American Idol season 19 (Number 4 on ABC) premieres on Sunday February 15.
