X Factor UK Headlines for 10/22/17

Niall Horan’s solo debut album is out! Five Directions: How One Direction’s Solo Careers Have Successfully Flexed Their Individual Talents. Sharon and Louis sign up for SEASON 15.

Niall Horan, Flicker, review: homespun MOR from One Direction’s dark horse
Now that all the members of One Direction have released solo music, we can start to judge how their post-boyband careers are shaping up. Who among the quintet is destined for Robbie Williams-style superstardom and who will be eating bugs on reality TV in a few years’ time?

Zayn Malik, the first to jump ship, has carved an interesting space in ultra-modern, sexed-up R’n’B. Harry Styles is making matinee idol waves with surprisingly scruffy pop-rock. Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson have ploughed a straighter pop furrow: big beats, catchy choruses and grinning guest stars.

FIRST LISTEN There’s not a Flicker of doubt that former One Direction star Niall Horan has nailed his debut album
Irish musician Niall Horan has naturally moved away from dance music and created a record that is a mature listen with lovely instrumentation and super-smooth vocals.
NIALL HORAN was always the guitar-strumming singer- songwriter of ONE DIRECTION.

So as the boys try to establish themselves after the split – with mixed results musically – Niall has naturally moved as far away from the dance-dominated charts as possible.

While HARRY STYLES went down the sophisticated Bowie-esque rock ’n’ roll route, Irishman Niall, is unashamedly soft rock – think JOHN MAYER crossed with ED SHEERAN.

ON HIS OWN Niall Horan on love and life after One Direction and how he’s finally getting back to basics
As he launches his solo career, the Irish singer reveals why he’s pleased to have left the boyband pressure cooker and what fans can expect from his new album Flicker
Knowing at the age of 24 that there’s a good chance your career has already peaked would be enough to make most people question the point of carrying on.

But not Niall Horan.

In fact, his assertion that nothing can ever come close to what he achieved with One Direction is actually a monumental relief – a licence to get on with the rest of his life and launch a solo career free from the burden of pressure.

“It’s really liberating. We all know that nothing I do will ever be as big as One Direction. But that means there’s no expectation and it’s quite nice to be able to just spread the wings.

While the two head backstage of Horan’s live show and also play a friendly game of golf, there’s one question Langdon poses in particular that is especially striking: “So if 1D came calling tomorrow, you’d drop everything and go back?”

A hesitant-looking Horan replies, “There is obviously unfinished business; we all know that.”

It may have been Harry Styles’ mom’s idea for him to audition for the U.K.’s X Factor, but it was his idea to call the group he was paired up with One Direction.

“I know they’re not here to defend anything else, but it was me,” Styles told CBS Sunday Morning’s Tony Dokoupil in a recent interview, referring to his bandmates Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson.

“I thought it sounded good. We threw around names for a little bit, and I honestly don’t know. I suggested it and everyone was like ‘Yeah we like that’ and then it kind of stuck, and that was what it was,” he explained.

Five Directions: How One Direction’s Solo Careers Have Successfully Flexed Their Individual Talents
At the end of 2015, One Direction fans around the world were feeling sad and uncertain. It was the beginning of One Direction’s hiatus, and while the guys claimed it would only be an 18-month break, Directioners had a sinking feeling that there wasn’t actually a plan for the guys to come back together in the foreseeable future.

Shortly after that, Zayn Malik (who left the group on March 25, 2015) delivered the first of many One Direction solo projects with the sultry and (scandalous) “Pillowtalk” on Jan. 26, 2016. Although he was already not part of the group, it was the first time fans heard a 1Der do his own thing — and it was just the beginning.

A year and a half later, all five One Direction guys (Malik, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne) have released solo material, with Horan becoming the third to release a full-length album, Flicker, this Friday (Oct. 20) — also the same day that Payne released his second official single, “Bedroom Floor.”
