“I never stopped loving you,” Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) says to his ex-wife, Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) during a prison visit, “I tried. It never went away.”

“You miss me?” asks Cookie, with a tinge of sadness. “You always were a ride or die,” says Lucious. “Always.”

And that’s how the brand new Empire season 2 trailer starts off. It’s mother against son, brother against brother this season, as a struggle to control Empire, the company, commences.

“My first order of business,” says Andre (Trai Byers), with a smiling Anika (Grace Gealey) by his side, “Is removing Lucious Lyon as CEO.”

Cut to Lucious, in prison, telling his number one son, Jamal (Jussie Smollett), “It needs to be…handled.” But not so fast! “In 24 hours, we will have our company!” declares Cookie.

The sibling rivalry continues as Jamal warns Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) “I’m going to bury your album.” Little brother ain’t afraid, shooting back, “I’m going to be bigger than you’ll ever be…Bigger than dad, too.”

That mother/son bond is suffering too. “We can be a family again,” pleads Cookie, as Jamal shuts the door in her face…

Lucious and Jamal face off against the rest of the family. Oh, how the family dynamics have changed. Who will come out of the battle victorious? The clip ends with Lucious having the last word, “Game over.”

The clip includes a bonus tease of new character, Mimi Whiteman (Marisa Tomei) telling the board, “Lucious Lyon is Empire. Without him the company is NOTHING.”

Throw in a prison riot, a huge concert with Cookie in a cage, Andre looking like he might be losing it again…who’s looking forward to September 23 when Empire returns to FOX?

As far as the slew of guest stars that have recently been announced (Pitbull was the latest), creator, Lee Daniels told reporters at the TCA press tour on Thursday, “The more celebrities, the more stars we put on this show, the more it takes away from the family.” But not to worry, “If we can dazzle you with a little Denzel, a little Oprah, that’s OK, but I think I got to stick to the family. That’s what the show is about.”
