Goldblum has played piano since he was a child and hosts a weekly jazz variety show, with his longtime band, The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, at Rockwell Table & Stage in Los Angeles.

From UdiscoverMusic:

The Capitol Studio Sessions recreates the atmosphere of those Rockwell shows, with the famed Capitol Studios transformed into a jazz club for the recording, with food and drink served to an invited live audience of Rockwell regulars, friends and family. The Capitol Studio Sessions was produced by the esteemed Larry Klein, widely respected for his work with Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, Madeleine Peyroux and others.

The album, The Capitol Studios Sessions, including the “My Baby Just Cares for Me” with Haley Reinhart is out November 9. Check out the delightful live video below.

  1. Kelly, Adam, Melinda to just name 3. but I don’t think comparisons are necessary! Haley is incredible! She was may fav, her season!

  2. I always thought she should go the Diana Krall route. Pop singers are a dime a dozen, but as a true jazz artist, Haley could have an outstanding career.

  3. Gotta check this out.

I loved the recording though so I’m sure the video will only cement that. :)

  4. I love this. This is the genre where Haley’s vocals just shine, her tone is unmistakeable from the first time she sings the word ?care?, and lets it resonate – and I enjoy her dynamics and phrasing choices; her *jazz stylings* are all supported with technical skills and breath control so smooth she makes it all look effortless.

Atmospheric, bluesy – Blues Club Jazz like this is a lane I very much like to wander down…and this track sounds like very good company. I’m sold. ?

  5. Just an addendum, but the music was also all so very good…and I had to check out the oddly named Mildred Snitzer Orchestra! I felt sure there had to be a story behind the title. Sure enough…the LA Times provided the background behind Jeff Goldblum’s Jazz combo…when not filming, he’s been playing with them since, well – I guess you could say The Turn of the Century! ? http://articles.latimes.com/2000/jul/16/magazine/tm-53663

The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra meets its namesake
    July 16, 2000
“To some good guy,” began the letter to Las Palmas Restaurant. “I hope you will answer this. I have never heard my orchestra. Would you do a cassette (I’ll be glad to pay whatever) so I know how I sound?”

The correspondent: 92-year-old Mildred Snitzer. The intended: the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, a jazz combo whose members–actors Jeff Goldblum and Peter Weller among them–play Monday nights at the Hollywood Boulevard eatery.

The whole Mildred affair started last year when Goldblum and his compatriots, poised to jam at the Playboy Jazz Festival, found themselves pressed for what to call themselves. Goldblum suggested the name of a family friend from his Pittsburgh childhood. So was born the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra.

It’s a funny thing when your name goes off to live a life of its own. Snitzer, who has survived two husbands and is now dating an 88-year-old retired colonel, didn’t hear about the jazz band until a friend sent her a clipping from the San Jose Mercury News.

  6. Any chance that Haley will commit to being a full-time jazz artist? Because that seems to be the genre in which she really shines, that fits her style the best. Yes, she can perform songs in other genres, and I know all the “don’t be stuck in a box” stuff. But I think that if she concentrated on being a jazz artist, she could establish herself as a big star in that format.

Just my opinion, of course. She can and should do whatever she wants to do

  7. Since I first saw Haley on her season of AI, I thought she was a natural performer. She looked like a pro back then.

  8. I enjoyed Haley and Jeff’s interaction in this video. I think it reflects Haley’s comfort as a performer and the comfort Jeff Goldblum reportedly imparts to others in how he interacts with them. They first met two days before this was recorded. Sidenote: Some longtime fans of Haley observed she’s wearing the dress she wore to prom as a sophomore in high school. Makes me think this all came together quickly.

  9. I’m a big fan of both Diana Krall and Haley. Agree with what you said, although her retro pop albums “Listen Up” and “Better” plus her originals on “What’s That Sound” are also proof of her versatility as a songwriter and artist. Jazzy Haley is divine.
