The Voice’s Ryleigh Modig Shares Her Coming Out Story on Ellen (Video)

Ryleigh Modig Ellen Degeneres

Ryleigh Modig, the young singer eliminated from The Voice season 20 at the Playoffs, dropped by the Ellen Degeneres Show to talk about her time on the show. She also performed Olivia Rodrigo’s “Driver’s Licence.”

Although the singer started off on Team Kelly Clarkson, John Legend stole her during the Knockouts. Ryleigh gushed over working with him, calling the coach “literally the most amazing human I’ve ever met in my life.” She added, “I just knew we were going to click from the second we met. We worked together and it was amazing, and everything I ever hoped for.”

Ryleigh also shared about coming out as a lesbian with Ellen, who is also openly gay. “I came out when I was 16. I have always known that I was gay,” she continued, “And so when I was 16 I had this friend and she was out, and we had this mutual attraction for each other and we fell in love.”

When Ryleigh finally shared the news with her mother, her reaction was, “That’s fine. Let’s go get some ice cream,” Ryleigh, calling her mother “amazing” added, “I just want to be open so people know that it’s OK to be exactly who you are.”

Ellen reacted, “It should not be a big deal. It’s just like somebody doesn’t have to go, ‘Mom, I’m straight.'”
