The Voice’s Matthew Schuler Comes Out Gay, Considers it a Sin (Video)

Matthew Schuler, a preacher’s kid, comes out as gay in an emotional Youtube video. The Voice season 5 alum shares how he knew he was attracted to men since the beginning of puberty, and it’s been a struggle ever since.

However, the singer, who considers himself a devout Christian, still believes that homosexuality is a sin and chooses to not to act on his attraction to men. In fact, he hopes to eventually marry a woman and have children some day.

The important thing for Matthew is to not harbor any secrets, thus he eventually came out to his family, and now to the public and his fans. Alongside his Youtube message Matthew wrote:

There’s no easy way to do this but if there’s one thing my Father’s death has taught me it’s that time is short and tomorrow is not promised. Sharing this part of my story with you is the scariest thing I’ll ever do in my life. But I know somewhere out there is a 17 year old christian kid struggling like I was with shame and condemnation about their sexuality. I’m here to say that you are not alone.

My values are centered around the christian faith and I know not everyone will agree with my views on sexuality and we may have different definitions of what sin is, but my goal is to use my story to spark healthy conversation about God and sexuality. There is still such a silence and stigma surrounding this issue in the church so I feel led to bridge the gap with my experience. Pray for me as I look to God’s word for the answers, speaking the truth in love to reach those who are searching.

This comes on the heels of American Idol season 7 alum David Archuleta revealing his struggle between his LDS beliefs and LGBTQIA+ identity.

Matthew competed on Team Christina Aguilera during season 5 in 2013. He finished in the Top 6. Watch his “Cough Syrup” audition below. Tessanne Chin eventually won his season of the show.
