After further investigation, I’m going to qualify what I wrote in yesterday’s ratings update about The Voice not receiving a bump from the Gwen Stefani/Blake Shelton gossip. Taking a glance at season 8 ratings, it appears that the numbers in the 18-49 demo dropped from a 3.2 on the last night of the Knockouts, to a 2.9 the first night of the Playoffs. The numbers fell a little further to a 2.7 on the second night.
Although there was no ratings rise this year, between the Knockouts and the Playoffs, the anticipation of watching new romantic couple, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton interact, may have kept some folks tuned in, or newbies took the place of folks who typically drop out at this stage.
My theory is bolstered by the significant drop back to season 8 levels for the Tuesday night edition of the Live Playoffs. The gossip had an effect, but it was short lived.
The good news is that The Voice ratings continue to (mostly) lead the nights when it airs (Big Bang Mondays is the exception, but they’re back on Thursdays). I haven’t done any crunching, but any ratings drops between season 8 and season 9 will be minimal. That’s in a climate where network ratings continue to fall off.
