The Voice - Season 8

WHOA. Sawyer Fredericks seems to be on the bullet train to the crown. Just two hours after the show ended on the east coast, and his song is already #3. Amazing. Joshua Davis made a major MAJOR comeback this week, with his gorgeous, plaintive rendition of “Fields of Gold.” He’s at #12 now, but the night is young. He’ll make the Top 10 and the 10x voting bonus. He won’t be anywhere near the bottom 3 this week.

After a gap, comes Kimberly Nichole, who gave a little shout out on twitter to American Idol alum, Haley Reinhart, for inspiring her version of the song.  As you know, Haley and Postmodern Jukebox recently uploaded an arrangement of “Creep” that went instantly viral.  I can only imagine how uhm, interesting her twitter mentions turned after that performance–which I found different enough from Haley and PMJ’s, that it didn’t feel like a total ripoff.

Corey Kent White is holding his own, despite Blake forcing him to sing a song he clearly did not like.  That felt a little cruel. Hannah Kirby sang a song that didn’t make my ears bleed, and there she is sitting at the bottom of iTunes. Maybe it was performing first. Or CeeLo’s creepily cheery kid dancers. And what the HELL Koryn Hawthorn? She got the pimp spot. Sure, her performance wasn’t perfect, but it was full of emotion. How could she be dead last on the chart? Maybe she needs a minute to catch up. It looks like Meghan Linsey’s return to ancient adult contemporary hurt her this week. The country blues is working for her. I hope it’s not too late for Blake to get that message.  India Carney went for a “moment” but it wasn’t THE moment of the night.  Will she stay out of the bottom 3?

iTunes Chart Numbers as of 12 am

3. Sawyer Fredericks – Simple Man
12. Joshua Davis – Fields of Gold
23. Kimberly Nichole – Creep
34. Corey Kent White – When I See You Smile
41. India Carney – Over the Rainbow
42. Meghan Linsey – Something
50. Koryn Hawthorn – Girl on Fire
54. Hannah Kirby – We Don’t Need Another Hero

My favorite performances tonight were from Joshua Davis and Koryn Hawthorne. Both singers have wildly different ways of expressing themselves. But what they have in common is the ability to connect deeply to a song. I’ll give Sawyer Fredericks an honorable mention. He belongs in that club too. I probably would have enjoyed his performance more with a band arrangement that didn’t drown him out.

Now it’s YOUR TURN. VOTE for your favorites. Who do YOU think is leaving the competition?
