The Voice 27 Semifinals: Lucia Flores-Wiseman is Bold with “Black Hole Sun”

The Voice Season 27 is finally live after multiple weeks of pre-taped competition. The contestants took the stage after having months off since the Playoffs. One singer boasting a unique tone, Seattle native Lucia Flores-Wiseman from Team Adam Levine, took on a bold ‘90s grunge rock hit with Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun.” At the top of the show, four more contestants were added to the Top 8 as each coach choose wildcards to rejoin the competition to make a Top 12. The day of rehearsals, it’s Lucia’s 23rd birthday. “If I had to wish for something, it would be to spend the day with Adam,” she stated. What she truly wants is to make the finale. Her hometown has been giving her a lot of love, including her mom’s 2nd grade class and Lucia’s pilates class. She chose a Soundgarden song, as they are also from Seattle, and her dad grew up listening to punk music. Adam described her tone as one you can “instantly identify.” He advised her to start acapella with no guitar. She wanted to show “raw emotion.” Adam suggested she add in strings to the arrangement, to make it James Bond-esque.

“The most Adam Levine performance ever”

The staging placed Lucia on top of a platform for the performance. She opened it up in an almost jazzy manner, showcasing her super cool tone–a very effective opening. Some of the lower notes got drowned out by the band, and I could’ve used slightly more power in the belty notes. But she is so versatile and interesting to listen to, even when there is some slight vocal imperfections. She’s one of the more artistic performers that’s graced The Voice stage. She let loose in the latter half, and showed why she would be a worthy finalist or even winner.

Host Carson Daly called it the “most Adam Levine performance ever.” He mentioned that Chris Cornell is one of Adam and Carson’s favorites and that it has been 8 years since we’ve lost him. Kelsea Ballerini stated after her performance, “Whatever you want to do with your voice, the opportunities are endless.” Adam added, “There are people out there who try to be different, and there are people out there who simply are different.”

Lucia was one of the standouts of the night, but Team John Legend’s RENZO also gave a super memorable closing performance with “Dream On” by Aerosmith as he attempted to show off some serious range. Team Legend’s Olivia Kuper Harris continued to showcase the pro she is with Ella Fitzgerald’s “Someone to Watch Over Me” and Team Adam’s Conor James picked a great song, Adele’s “Chasing Pavements.” Team Adam and Team Legend had nearly all the standouts on this Semi-Finals night.
