The episode begins on the Taku tribe. Lindsay is glad tribal council went according to plan. In addition, Maryanne revealed she has an extra vote. Lindsay is unsure about Maryanne having that power, but she hopes that the advantage will be for the tribe. Later they day, the tribe goes hunting for a hidden immunity idol. Maryanne stumbles upon the Beware Advantage. After some hesitancy, she opens it. She learns about the stipulations of the Beware Advantage. The idol she found won’t be activated until one person on each tribe recites a secret phrase. She cannot vote at tribal council until the three-way idol is activated. She shares the Beware Advantage details with her other tribe members too.
At the Vati tribe, Daniel notes that there are three duos: Mike and Jenny, Daniel and Chanelle, and Hai and Lydia. Daniel wanted to reread Mike’s advantage. Mike doesn’t want to pull out the advantage and risk someone else noticing, but Daniel is insistent. Mike reluctantly gives him the Beware Advantage package, and Daniel rereads the details alone. Daniel admits he was contemplating voting out Mike to prevent the idols from being activated.
After rereading the details, Daniel realizes the other idols can still be activated without Mike. Daniel realizes he must keep Mike in the game so their tribe can also have an idol in their possession. Daniel returns the Beware Advantage package to Mike, but Mike notices the idol and one of the pieces of parchments is missing. Mike is chagrined as he and Daniel go searching for the missing idol. Daniel finds the idol on the ground, and he realizes he left a piece of parchment down his underwear too.
The three tribes gather for the immunity challenge. Maryanne recites a secret phrase, but no one on the other tribes does. Mike now knows Maryanne has one of the idols in her possession. However, he chose to stay quiet since no one on the Ika tribe repeated a secret phrase.
For this immunity challenge, tribe members must retrieve a ladder from the bottom of the ocean floor. They will then have to use the ladder to reach a key. This key will unlock a bag of sand bags. They will have to make their way back to shore and toss the sand bags onto five targets. The first two tribes to finish will win immunity and reward. The reward includes a tool kit and a basket of fruit.
The challenge begins. The ocean current is very tough, making today’s challenge very difficult. Jonathan’s height and strength allows him to carry the ladder himself. He is single-handedly putting the Taku tribe in the early lead. Ika is in second place while Vati is struggling in last place. While Ika and Vati are still in the water, Taku manages to get to shore to toss their sand bags largely thanks to Jonathan. Jonathan also lands the sand bags for his tribe. Taku wins immunity!
The water is very turbulent and the castaways still in the water are struggling. Production decides to interrupt the challenge. To avoid risk of drowning, their keys will be provided for them and the challenge will continue on shore. After they get their keys handed to them, Ika and Vati can proceed. It’s Rocksroy vs Mike at the sand bags. They each land four sand bags, but Drea and Chanelle switch out for the last sand bag. Drea lands it for Ika. Ika wins immunity! Vati will go to tribal council tonight. Taku must also choose two people to “go on a journey.” They each must be from a different tribe. They choose Chanelle and Omar.
The Vati tribe returns to camp. Jenny is worried with Chanelle away and Mike being unable to vote. Jenny and Mike talk game, and Jenny hopes Daniel, Chanelle, and herself will vote out Lydia tonight. Meanwhile, Hai, Lydia, and Daniel discuss voting for Jenny tonight. Hai says today’s vote will establish where everyone stands. After Daniel’s discussion with Hai and Lydia, he runs back to Mike and Jenny. He shares with them the details of his conversation with Hai and Lydia. He hopes Lydia is voted out tonight, but he’s concerned how Mike doesn’t have a vote tonight. He says it could all come down to Chanelle.
Meanwhile at the summit, Chanelle and Omar discuss their options. They agree to protect one another and play it safe. The two of them separate, and they are faced with the prisoner’s dilemma. They can risk their vote to win an extra vote, or they can play it safe. Chanelle and Omar both speculate that the other wants to play it safe. They both decide to risk their votes. As a result, they both lose their vote. Now that Chanelle cannot vote, only four people from the Vati tribe will be able to vote at tonight’s tribal council. Chanelle won’t know she lost her vote until she’s about to cast her vote at tribal council.
Back at the Vati tribe, Lydia is hopeful she, Hai, Daniel, and Chanelle will be the majority tonight. She is also aware Mike and Jenny are targeting her. Daniel greets Chanelle when she returns, and she tells him they should vote out Lydia tonight. She also shares that she may not have a vote at tribal council tonight. Chanelle says they need to convince Hai and Lydia to split the votes. Chanelle talks to Hai and Lydia later, and she tells them that the girls should vote for Jenny and the boys should vote for Mike. Hai notices how Chanelle seemed frazzled after her trip back from the summit. In her confessional, Chanelle says she’s confident she can sway the outcome of tonight’s vote without having a vote.
It’s time for tribal council. Hai says they are all struggling, but he’s happy to be here. Chanelle explained her trip to the summit. She says she had a decision to play it safe or to take a risk. She lies and says she played it safe. Mike says he takes everything at face value. He says he believes Chanelle. Hai says tonight will draw tribal lines. He adds that his tribe is his family and he trusts them. Daniel admits he’s paranoid and constantly running numbers. He needs people to calm him down. Jeff asks Daniel who calms him down, and he mentions Mike and Chanelle. Hai notices the omission of his and Lydia’s name. Jenny knows she could be a target since she went to the summit too. She says she told people what happened there when she went, but she is aware people may not believe her. Afterwards, it’s time for the vote.
Mike cannot vote due to the Beware Advantage. Chanelle learns she lost her vote tonight. To keep the twists a secret, they each read a message informing them they cannot vote when they are at the voting booth.
Jeff reads the votes. The first vote is for…
Lydia
Jenny
Lydia
Jenny
It’s a tie. They must vote again. Lydia and Jenny cannot vote. And due to Mike’s Beware Advantage and Chanelle’s risk at the summit, they still cannot vote.
Jeff reads the votes. The first vote is for…
Jenny
Lydia
It’s a tie again. “Where are the votes?” Hai asks. Jeff explains why there were only two votes. He asks for the two people who didn’t vote to reveal themselves. Mike and Chanelle raise their hands. Jeff says that due to the twist of Mike and Chanelle not casting votes, Hai and Daniel must come to an agreement on whom to vote out between Lydia and Jenny. Mike and Chanelle can try to influence them, but they have no say. If Hai and Daniel cannot agree, then Lydia and Jenny will be safe. Hai, Daniel, Mike, and Chanelle will then have to draw rocks to decide who goes home.
The discussion begins with Daniel saying he does not want to draw rocks. Daniel tries to blame tonight’s vote on Chanelle. He repeats to Hai and Lydia that he was instructed to vote for Lydia tonight. Chanelle is stunned that Daniel is placing the blame on her. Daniel asks Chanelle who she wants to vote out tonight, but Chanelle reminds him that she has no vote tonight. Chanelle asks if he wants to go to rocks. Mike and Jenny asks if Hai will switch his vote tonight. Hai says he will not change his vote. He will go to rocks. Daniel asks Hai and Lydia if they will hold tonight’s vote against him. They tell him no, and Lydia tells Daniel she trusted him and wants to work with him. Hai and Lydia asked Daniel why he voted against them, and he again blames it on a group decision. Chanelle quietly calls Daniel a snake. Jenny tells Hai he will be fracturing the tribe since the majority were going to vote out Lydia tonight. However, Hai stands by his vote against Jenny. Jeff asks for the final decision. Hai is keeping his vote on Jenny. Daniel is afraid of a 25% chance of going home by a rock draw. Daniel switches to vote out Jenny.
Jenny is the fourth person voted out of Survivor 42.
