Shania Twain to Mentor American Idol 9

TV Guide is reporting that country music star,   Shania Twain, will be a mentor on American Idol 9.

Shania was one of the better guest judges this year, sitting in during the Chicago auditions over the summer.  I expect she’ll also be a fine mentor.

No word on when she’ll be mentoring, or what the theme will be, but I  think a country theme is a safe bet.

“Shania really enjoyed doing the show, ” says her rep, who wouldn’t confirm her appearance, “She’d love to go back.”

  1. I hope this means she’s putting out an album soon. I’m not a country fan, but I always got a kick out of Shania.

  2. WHOO HOO!!!! I can’t tell you how happy this makes me to read this!! I’ve been saying that Shania should mentor and perform her new song that will be on her new album coming out this year…then finishing my thought with…in my dreams. YES YES YES!!!!

  3. She was a great guest judge, this is cool news. Her ‘bottom end’ joke was so funny and she didn’t even realize it. :)

  4. so much for my Christmas wish that they’d skip country this year. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  5. This means country week for top 7 I guess? It’s great that Shania has accepted to do this.

  6. This is great news, if true. I think Shania will make a fabulous mentor and of course the theme will be Country.

  7. something that makes sense for me this week.

Except that like other, i would have preferred they skip country theme this year.

Why wouldn’t they have an indie theme week? that would be fun and open for surprises

  8. Great news! Shania was a great guest judge, and has years of success and experience to share with the contestants. Hopefully, she can add some credibility despite recent revelations.

  9. Awesome news…Love Shania!

It is amazing she would still want to do it, after so many think Adam Lambert will have tarnished the validity of the mentor role on AI. :)

  10. Wasn’t Shania considered one of the biggest and pioneering Crossover artists back in the day? That was when Nashville was still very insular and kind of looked down their noses at anyone who was popular in both country and pop formats. Was she ever fully embraced by the Country establishment? She paved the way for Carrie, Taylor Swift, etc.

I would love for AI to do a Crossover Theme with Shania, not Country – if that makes any sense. Where the contestants are challenged to take a song from one genre and make it palatable in another, while still retaining the original appeal. That would be so interesting, but way too ambitious for AI probably. Although people like Blake Lewis, David Cook, Adam and Kris, etc. were doing it organically on the show a long time ago.

Although Shania is a huge megastar she’s far from the first country act to cross over. Ladies like Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, and Brenda Lee crossed over way before Shania ever did. They really paved the way and unlike Shania (but like Carrie) they crossed over without remixing their songs.

If Carrie keeps on the way she’s been going she’ll probably end up more accepted by the Nashville establishment because she’s done more to honor traditional country than Shania.

Shania’s definitely a step in the right direction for a mentor choice after the Miley and Adam picks. Can’t argue with her resume.

  12. Windmills, I agree with everything you said, but that was kind of my whole point. The others you mention, and yes, Carrie too, have always been true Country Goddesses, who became so popular that they worked they way into popular culture as well, but still always as Country Icons. My point was that Shania was one of the first true 50/50 Pop/Country artists that I can think of, and probably leaned more towards Pop even. I look at Taylor Swift in the same way. Maybe early KD Lang, Dixie Chicks. I don’t know, just ass-talking. I’m not a huge fan of Shania’s music, but I think that she is great and her success back in the day was HUGE.

  13. Yay! I was so scared that they weren’t going to do a country week (it’s my favorite genre, and I’ve been listening to it since I was born,) and Shania being the mentor is just icing on the cake. :) Bets on showing the “beautiful bottom end” joke?
IGB is Top 7 week, and that’s usually “Insperational Crap” week so probably the week after? I don’t think they’ll have time for mentors top 5/4 unless we get jipped on songs like last season. I hate it when they don’t do country week early. I want to hear a whole bunch of songs, dangit!

  14. I wonder if the theme is going to be just Shania Twain songs. I hope it is just general country themed.

  15. Can she replace Adam next week?! God, I am tempted to not even watch next week. BARF! My question is why has Kelly or Carrie never been asked?

  16. My question is why has Kelly or Carrie never been asked?

How do you know they haven’t been?

  17. Woohoo! First Adam and now Shania! I can’t wait for next week and then whatever week she will be on. Even if its country(blegh!). She was an awesome guest judge. She will be a great mentor.

  18. Dolly Parton, Elvis, Johnny Cash are the biggest crossover country that I can think of.

I want a Dr. Demento week with Weird Al Yankovich as the mentor.

  19. whoopie blehhhhh! She is nice but I want better mentors. This season has no mentors!! The kids that need the most help are getting non!

  20. This season has no mentors!!

I’d have to disagree with you there :( Usher was great at boosting their confidence and getting them to connect to the song. Even Miley had some things about preforming that helped, which is this crop’s biggest issue. Adam will (probably) be a good mentor, just by virtue of him being on the show and knowing exactly what they’re going through. And Shania was one of the best guest judges of this season. In fact, I think the mentors they got this year aremuch better than in years past.

  21. tempted to not even watch next week

Then don’t.I’m pretty sure the ratings won’t suffer too much if one person decides not to watch…

  22. Quite a few said they arent going to watch. Unfortunately there are a lot more that havent watched that said they are going to to watch Adam again. So whatever. I sure as heck am excited to watch, on topic, I love Shania, so it means a country nite. Simon can have his wish about Katie being country. If she is still there I cant wait to hear Simon’s comments to her.

Shania was a rebel, did not want to follow the good ole ways of Nashville for writing/recording songs. She sang show tunes in a resort to support her brothers and sisters after her parents died. She wanted to record rock, but was convinced to go country instead so she is very capable of mentoring multiple genres of music.

  24. That’s great – Shania is at least very qualified to be a mentor having done extremely well in the US , Canada & worldwide .
She also has experience with having success after having a hard life where she was left to look after her siblings when her parents were killed!! Perserverance is the key.She should be able to give great advise to these idols.

  25. The best week this group has had so far has been one without mentors. Lets just get video taped “Good Luck” messages from icons and do away with the photo ops.

  26. She is one of the very few artists who have two diamond albums. Take that, MC and AL.

  27. So, Top 8 will be an still unknown theme with Adam as a mentor, and the Top 7 week will be the one on IGB, right? Probably with “inspirational songs” as a theme again. So probably Shania will be landing as a mentor on Top 6. Unless she is there for IGB.

Somewhere, John Park is shedding a tear…

  28. Now this is one mentor I’m on board with. She was one of my favorite guest judges. I actually think that this group will do pretty good with country, especially if they can put a pop or R&B twist on it.

  29. Now here is a proper mentor, why nobody get excited? only 32 posts so far (33 including mine)? The other thread got 1300+ posts, you know. Sheesh, what’s wrong with you peeps?!

  30. Now here is a proper mentor, why nobody get excited?

A lack of WTH posts isn’t a sign of a lack of excitement.

I have mixed feelings about there being a country music theme. It’s my favorite kind of music and I love that it’s represented on a show like AI. But the theme also gives a lot of people, including and especially Simon Cowell, the opportunity to show a lot of embarrassing ignorance about country music. Past years he’s just been in a bad mood that week and his comments are useless. This year he’s decided Katie Stevens who doesn’t have a country bone in her body should go country and he’s dug in his heels about it.

Shania isn’t known for her deep knowledge of country music but she certainly helped shape it in the 90s and she’s been an influence on the new generation of girls in country no doubt. I’d like to see her shut Simon down when he tries to judge but that won’t happen.

  31. Levine: “Now here is a proper mentor, why nobody get excited? only 32 posts so far (33 including mine)? The other thread got 1300+ posts, you know. Sheesh, what’s wrong with you peeps?!”

Uh, I don’t know … maybe just one more clue as to why Adam was asked?

Well, I am excited! She seemed to really care about the contestants and I think she can provide valuable advice. YAY! However, to ask her to compete with all the posts on Adam? Come on…
