This is our continuation of our preview of possible Season 9 contestants. Remember, that the Hollywood round doesn’t occur until January 9th this year. We don’t know how far any of these contestants might go. And since we never see some of the competition round contestants until the competition starts, we might never see some of these people.

Come on Get Higher
Dead or Alive

Nick Lynch has tried out for American Idol before and made it to Hollywood in Season 8. Anybody remember him? Maybe he didn’t get any air time last year which may not be a good thing (or they were hiding him for this year). Dude can handle “Open Arms” so Clive will probably like him. He participated in some kind of Idol-like bar contest recently, so there are a bunch of decent recordings of him singing (note to Nick: some good and a few not). A lot of those songs are AI standards.

IDK. I bet he wins every karaoke contest he’s in and he’d probably get some panties thrown at him during the tour. He managed to sound pretty current on recent hit song “Come on Get Higher” (not so much on “Viva la Vida”. I guess that song is harder to sing than I thought. Learn from Matt and don’t sing that on the show). But does he bring anything new to the table? Does he need to? He’s probably versatile enough to make it to the 5-8 range if he’s featured enough during the audition/Hollywood week. Although, it probably wouldn’t hurt for him to brush up on those interview skills. Every season needs a Nick-like contestant. Maybe this year will be his turn.

What do you think?

  1. Found some original stuff: http://www.purevolume.com/nicklynch

Not overly impressive. But he may have the combination of looks, personality and enough talent to be more than cannon fodder. His myspace refers to being an AI finalist, but it also hasn’t been updated since 10/2007. Wondering if S9 may be his third Hollywood trip?

  2. The thing is, peeps like this (and the others that have been highlighted so far) are the main reason Idol is losing viewership. Boring. This guy is just the average soft rock peep with a decent voice. I wish they could find a few peeps that could bring a little excitement to both the music (doing something a bit different and preferably contemporary from the idol norm performance wise) and the show (thinking of Allison’s unscripted moment: “it’s not like I’m cutting myself”).

  3. OMG, is this a joke?

Open Arms was a TRAGIC PITCHFEST. I mean, bad. And they are highlighting this guy? Wow, so far from what I have seen, this season is gonna blow.

    edit

  4. Reminder:

This post is NOT about Season 8. Let’s stick to the topic–this particular Idol wannabe and Season 9.

Also, could be avoid stereotyping the “typical Idol viewer”? I don’t want to spend time stamping out fanwars in this thread.

  5. I wish they could find a few peeps that could bring a little excitement to both the music (doing something a bit different and preferably contemporary from the idol norm performance wise)

They likely will find a variety of people. The reason why a lot of talented people (like Amber Riley from Glee) don’t make it on this show is because they have to cast the show. There are people who enjoy soft-rockers like Nick and he could be cast to appeal to that demographic. The years they get into trouble, they cast too many of a similar type (or that appeal to one demographic). The years that tour does better, they tend to cast more variety (or more variety makes it into the final 10).

And they are highlighting this guy?

They didn’t last year when he was on the show and they may not this year either. We are just examining some of the contestants that are rumoured to have made it to Hollywood.

If people were going to cast this show to maximize demographics, what kind of people would you be looking for in the top 12? I think there has to be a viable country artist this year since this demographic was ignored last year (neither Danny nor Michael sold themselves as country artists) and Kristy Lee Cook in S7 didn’t exactly set the world on fire. Heck, you pretty much have to go back to S5 (since Phil wasn’t originally a country artist either in S6). A pop/rock dude or two (this guy could be one of them). A couple of belters. Somebody a little folky. R&B representative (or 3…not a lot of R&B artists in the last couple of years). A girl with red hair. And so on.

  6. I’m willing to root for him for starters because he is from Illinois. (Maybe he can sing a little Dan Fogelberg and bring in the central IL fanbase. If there is such a thing!) I like him fine, he’s cute, he has a decent voice, and coming from Watseka… Yikes. That place is tiny. Not like there’s a whole lot of opportunity there if you want a career in music.

Uncomfortable fact, but absolutely true. I’m not one to call it completely unfair, either, given the business that they’re entering requires something more than a good voice, but it is uncomfortable to note the amount of really good talent that never gets through. Though, honestly, I wouldn’t change it; I have a suspicion of the kind of singers they see an awful lot of (thinking of stage-school type vocalists who would be more attuned to a try-out type format), and if those people completely clogged up airtime, I likely wouldn’t enjoy the show.

Though I wish we could get a diverse Top Whatever (24 this year, right?) without having to stack the deck with a decent amount of cannon fodder, especially thinking of the Amy Davis types of the Idol universe, who were never interesting nor talented.

In regards to this particular guy… well, I think that someone better is bound to audition in his genre. I’d be surprised to see him go anywhere. But who knows?

  8. I could actually see this guy in the top 12. I think he is the kind of uninspiring male contestant they want in the top 12. There is nothing special enough about his looks, voice, or style to push him to the top, but he could belt out enough songs to make top 12-8. I looked at a lot of the youtube videos on idolforums, and I think the depth of talent this year is in R & B singers (some I saw were by FAR the most current and talented R & B artists the show has ever had), Female folk singers, and country artists. I think they want a winner and runner up from those categories.

  9. I could actually see this guy in the top 12. I think he is the kind of uninspiring male contestant they want in the top 12.

Exactly. He appeals to a certain demographic to keep them happy while being no threat to who they really want to win.

I think they want a winner and runner up from those categories.

They generally have back-ups for the people they want to have win. As the back-ups with less talent/push leave the show, the vote coalesces around the person they would like to have win.

I suspect they want a female winner this year, but I wouldn’t count out them also wanting to add a country dude to their collection of Idols.

  10. Dime a dozen! He sounds like hundreds (maybe thousands) of others doing the same type music. I heard nothing that sets him apart.

But there has been more than one AI winner who fit that description.

  11. Meh. He’s got an ok voice, but doesn’t stand out at all. He could make tour, but I don’t know if he would have a real chance to win.

  12. Dime a dozen! He sounds like hundreds (maybe thousands) of others doing the same type music. I heard nothing that sets him apart.

But there has been more than one AI winner who fit that description.

How did they get past the judges, and get all those votes? Tsk.

This guy really is a dime a dozen, he can’t even hit his notes or stay on pitch.

  13. I do agree, he isn’t that good. I say he gets cut in Hollywood again.

  14. What I don’t get is that this guy went for it on Open Arms when he clearly doesn’t have the pipes. Why try a song that is going to so easily showcase your shortcomings?

  15. He is a great singer but he is a copy catter. He didn’t sing any of the songs his own way. That’s a shame. :( He is hot tho. :)

  16. I hope he doesn’t get very far. He wasn’t very good and he came off too important to be there during his interview. Like he really didn’t want to be interviewed…

    BORING

  17. I think he’s ok but I don’t think there is anything really original about him. Very much a “karaoke” singer. I’m interested in seeing if he makes it through and improves.

  18. As a few others have said, he just is too karaoke. He doesn’t really stand out vocally but he is a nice looking guy. I guess we’ll see what happens.

Come On Get Higher is the best I’ve heard so far.
