Sales News – Week Ending – 03/10/16

A rare treat this morning in that the Final sales chart and SPS chart have already arrived.

As expected, critical darling Kendrick Lamar has the top album. But, it really shows how Rap sales have declined. Remember when expected Rap albums regularly put up big numbers? The SPS numbers at 174K are decentish, but the sales numbers are a little low for such a popular guy. Adele is second in sales, but slides to third once Rihanna makes a big jump for singles and streams. Adele isn’t hitting it out of the park this time with follow-up singles and she isn’t into streaming. Justin also rides streaming/downloads to hit 4th on the SPS (12th in sales). Lots of debuts in the top 10 this week – Kenrik (Rap), 2 Chainz (Rap), Ray (Grumpy Eccentric), Ninja Sex Party (Musical Comedy Duo), Granger Smith (Country), Loretta Lynn (Country) and Newsboys (Christian Pop) all debut. Joey and Rory see an increase in sales.

Kelly Clarkson makes a massive leap on the SPS chart from the sales chart. She sold 5110 copies of her album to cling to the bottom of the top 50 sales chart but moves up to 12th on the SPS chart with 27,711 (precisely). Lauren Daigle is 47th on Sales while One Direction is 46th on the SPS.

A couple of interesting articles out of HDD. The first talks about Kayne West’s last minute decision to only offer his latest album on Tidal. While it is his choice to lose money, what about all the others that contributed to the album. Writers and producers are likely to lose revenue based on Kayne’s arbitrary decision. Total has only 1.75% of the market share and streaming doesn’t pay a lot of royalties to writers. Some of those tracks have 12 writers on them further diluting the revenue. Big name producers are often paid up front (and handsomely), but some of those songwriters probably didn’t take much money and just hoped their song would make the track. Kayne usually generates some fairly significant sales and gets airplay. Will this affect who will work with him in the future? Or is getting a credit on anything Kayne works on worth it to your resume?

The next article talks about the morbund format of modern rock. Let’s just say, it’s not very modern. Less than 20% of the songs played on that format are current songs. No, that isn’t a typo. Modern rock is mostly Old Rock and songs stay on the format forever.
