American Idol 15 Top 6 – Take the Polls

AMERICAN IDOL: Top 6: L-R: Contestants Avalon Young and Sonika Vaid perform on AMERICAN IDOL airing Thursday, March 10 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. © 2016 FOX Broadcasting Co. Cr: Ray Mickshaw/ FOX. This image is embargoed until Thursday, March 10,10:00PM PT / 1:00AM ET

Let’s take the pledge! I will no longer allow Bing predictions to color my attempts at prognostication! If I had been choosing from my gut, I would have nailed it.

I’m sorry to see Avalon Young go. American Idol has not had a performer quite like her–a young woman with a hip-hop flair. It’s a genre that doesn’t fly on Idol as it is. Avalon flipped several male songs, which has happened on Idol to be sure, but typically by a female artist trying something a little edgy. Avalon’s boy songs were practically her signature. Really cool and unusual–I’m going to miss her! And to think I had my doubts after her audition.

La’Porsha Renae deserves to win this competition. She’s an impeccable vocalist and compelling performer. Her musical instincts are incredible.  I’m still not convinced she can beat the boys, namely Dalton Rapattoni and MacKenzie Bourg.  If I had choose a favorite boy, I’d go with Trent Harmon. His duet with La’Porsha had me wishing for them to be the last two standing at the finale. Trent’s been handed the growth arc narrative, which bodes well for him. I still think Scott would rather sign Tristan McIntosh or MacKenzie Bourg or even Dalton. The next week or two could be interesting. I’m not ready to call a winner yet.

Next week the judges should bow out of the elimination process and finally allow America to determine which singer moves forward. Remember the good old days, when America made all the decisions when the live shows began? Other than a wildcard or two and the judges save, it was all up to us! One contestant will be eliminated next week and the singer with the lowest votes PERIOD should be heading home.  If the judges are still in the mix, they better pick a song that can save them.

ETA: Out of eight solo songs three were Beatles songs. A testament to the group’s enduring appeal perhaps. And what a coincidence that the group’s iconic producer died this week.
