The Voice 25 Blind Audition: Returning no-chair Serenity Arce Turns 4 Chairs and inspires a Block
Sixteen year-old Serenity Arce performed Sam Fischer’s “This City” for her The Voice Blind Audition and received a 4 chair turn. But oh no. The last The Voice coach with a block–John Legend–used it against new double chair team Dan + Shay.
The new clip from NBC is a preview from Monday’s (March 11) Auditions 5 episode. After Tuesday’s 6th Blind Audition episode, it will be time to move on to the Battles!
The coaches were quick to hit their buttons, but Dan + Shay needed to be quicker. John looked extremely smug as he glanced at the big red BLOCKED lit up in front of the duo’s chairs.
After Serenity delivered an artful and beautifully phrased rendition of the song, the coaches began their fierce pitches, attempting to woo the singer on to their respective teams. The Jupiter, Florida teenager was overcome with emotion after her performance.
Serenity auditioned two years ago age 14
“You look familiar,” John noted. As it turned out, Serenity was a no chair turn two years ago at 14 years old. “I’m so proud of you for coming back here,” John said, adding, “All of us have had people tell us no, and we had to come back and say, we’re going to try again, and that’s how we got to where we are.”
Dan said, “I felt that performance deep down in my soul.” He added, whoever blocked us,…” Shay piped up, “We know who it was! It’s rude and I think it’s mean, but take it as a compliment.”
“That was amazing,” said Chance the Rapper, “A real dedication to giving a great performance.” He added, “You have this amazing use of your head voice and your higher register. But you also have this crazy smooth transition into your chest…it makes me really excited to see the range of songs that you do.” Continuing his persuasive pitch, Chance promised Serenity that he will help her pick songs, while also allowing her to choose what she “wants to show to the world.”
Reba McEntire added, “Wonderful voice, you’re beautiful. I’m one of the country acts here.” She noted that the other country act, Dan + Shay, are blocked. “Being a country act,” Reba continued, “I’ve been in the business a long, long time and I feel like I could steer you in a way to enhance the qualities that you already have.”
“I would have turned for you!” says Chance
“Your voice is so powerful and crisp,” John remarked. “It sounds like it could be on the radio immediately because it has that ability to cut through the music. And it’s also really distinct and cool and doesn’t sound like anybody else.”
The inevitable snark from Chance: “John is covering up that he didn’t turn around for you two years ago. If I was there two years ago, I would have turned.” He has no idea about that. The growth between 14 and 16 years of age can be exponential. Most 14 year olds aren’t ready to compete on a competition show.
