Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Feb 1-7

Six milestones to Monday Morning quarterback this week – let’s hope nobody slouches off in a fit of pique (and that creepy Mountain Dew creature did not haunt your dreams).

ZAYN’s “Pillowtalk” continues to be anything but sleepy. This week, it has the strongest bullet on Pop with a spincreaes of 2086. That’s 500+ more than the next highest bullet. So it is of little surprise that ZAYN leap-frogged over one milestone (Top 40) to get to a second one (Top 30) on Pop. He can’t be anything but happy with this release and I bet the people in charge of the roll-outs for the other One Directioners are pretty excited too.

Another happy team is Fantasia’s. She is rock solid in the UAC format consistently racking up the hits. This time the 3rd Idol Winner is having success with her debut single from her TBA announced album. “No Time for It” goes top 15 on UAC.

Also from Idol, we have Season 10 runner-up Lauren Alaina. Her “Next Boyfriend” is her latest single and it has climbed into the top 50 on Country. Top 50-40 is a danger zone for the Country charts. Many songs stall here (the winner from her season just did and then lost his label), so let’s hope she keeps the forward momentum.

Two Idol auditioners are showing that the judges don’t always necessarily get it right. Lauren Daigle racks up another top 15 song on CAC with “Trust in You” while Tori Kelly debuts her latest single on HAC. “Hollow” is also 22nd on the Pop chart.

Finally, we have synergy between artists from two different reality singing shows. Chris Young won the fourth season of Nashville Star while Cassadee Pope won the third season of The Voice. Chris is now a Country format regular while Cassadee has had some success, but not yet become established. Will this collaboration with Chris be the true break-out she needs? “Think of You” made a big move from 33 to 26 on the chart for top 30.

Billboard tells us that Rihanna’s “Anti” album was the biggest album of the week with 166K in equivalent albums (124K in sales). This is actually not a debut on the chart as it was 27th last week with a bit of a stumble at the release on Tidal. She topped the chart with her last album “Unapologetic” which did 238K in sales its first week. This is the biggest jump to number 1 since Radiohead’s “Rainbow” jumped from 156th to first in 2008. They had charted on street violations.

Kevin Gate’s “Isiah” nabs the second spot on the album with 122K while Adele’s “25” get moved back to 3rd. She’s not crying though because this week helped push her past 8M in sales. Woo! Sia’s “This is Acting” is 4th while Justin Bieber is 5th in his 12th week. Charlie Puth’s first full-length album debuts at 6th. twenty one pilots are 7th, Chris Stapleton 7th, Bryson Tiller 9th and G-Eazy is 10th.

Coldplay got some hot responses from their Super Bowl half-time show lifting their latest single “Adventure of a Lifetime” to number 2 on the iTunes chart. They have 3 songs in the top 10 with the other two being “Viva la Vida” and “Paradise”. Nine of their songs are in the top 70. I find their latest video super creepy, but the song has a good groove.
