Monday Morning Mediabase 01/24/2022

Three milestones this week brought to you by George.

Lauren Spencer-Smith may not have lasted long on American Idol (COVID Home Edition), but she is having a triumphant run on Pop radio. Her single “Fingers Crossed” debuted in the top 40 on Pop last week and has already pulled into the top 30 this week. It takes a lot of spins to make a move like that. She is a social media sensation, but it is not always easy to make that transition to mainstream media. She may be interesting to watch. The demo of the song on TikTok went viral and the song is also having success in the UK and Australia.

Meanwhile, on Country, we have another Idol making a milestone. This time it is Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery. His latest single from “Same Truck” is called “Damn Strait”. The song achieved top 30 on Country this week.

Finally, we have Normani who comes to us from the US franchise of X-Factor. She has been working “Wild Side” featuring Cardi B. since July of 2021 and the song has previously been number on on Urban. This week, it reached the top 5 on Rhythmic.

So, what is the George connection? Scotty McCreery’s song is a tribute to Country legend George Strait. The song references him in the title and refers to many of his hits. Lauren Spencer-Smith lives in Nanaimo on the Strait of Georgia (on Idol, she performed on her deck which overlooking the waterway or one of its offshoots). Finally, Normania is from Georgia which was named after King George II while the Strait of Georgia is named after his grandson, King George III. George Strait is also known as the “King of Country”.

Over on the BB200, we, as usual, see Morgan Wallen with his “Dangerous: The Double Album”. This week, it is number 5 (as it was last week) with 41K in equivalent albums sold (-5% from last week). The album was released on January 8th, 2021 and I don’t think it’s left the top 10 since it’s release).
