Michael Keaton Skits Saturday Night Live - Season 40

Michael Keaton Skits Saturday Night Live

Michael Keaton, fresh off of his triumphant return in the movie “Birdman” was the guest host on last night’s Saturday Night Live, with musical guest Carly Rae Jepsen. I’m a big fan of Michael’s work, but I was a little disappointed. I think the SNL writers weren’t quite sure what to do with the actor’s particular brand of weird.

Check out a few of the skits below:

NCAA Tournament Cold

Ernie Johnson (Beck Bennett), Kenny Smith (Jay Pharoah) and Charles Barkley (Kenan Thompson) discuss Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski’s (Taran Killam) surprising announcement.

Michael Keaton Tribute Monologue

Taran Killam and Bobby Moynihan interrupt Michael Keaton’s monologue to try and convince him to play Batman and Beetlejuice with them. Michael does finally repeat famous catch phrases from both films.

Easter Candy

Michael Keaton shares what’s inside his Easter basket, including a plush bunny, a DVD of the movie Friday and Jordan almonds. THIS skit, which came at the end of the episode like a throwaway, was actually super weird and funny.

Neurotology Music Video

This digital short doesn’t make much sense unless you’ve seen the new HBO documentary on Scientology, “Going Clear,” which I had seen only hours before SNL and HIGHLY recommend (even though it literally gave me nightmares). This short is a take off of a music video released by the group. You could call it a parody, but SNL didn’t have to change much, including pointing out the folks who are missing or currently “imprisoned” by, what really amounts to a cult. According to the film, it was Scientology that came between Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. Higher ups also manipulated Nicole’s kids, creating a wedge between them. That part of her life must seem like a bad dream now that she’s started a new life and family with Keith Urban. I got a little off topic here, but I can’t recommend the doc more highly.

CNN Newsroom

Brooke Baldwin (Cecily Strong) breaks down the Germanwings plane crash, the Iran nuclear weapons deal and Indiana’s religious freedom law with animated graphics, puppet stand-ins and a performance art group (Michael Keaton, Kenan Thompson, Aidy Bryant). At first, I was a little put off, because it seemed too soon after the tragic Germanwings crash to include it in a comedy skit. But it quickly became clear that the skit was mocking the downward spiral of the network into “infotainment.”

Weekend Update: Pete Davidson on The Walking Dead Season Finale (ft. Norman Reedus)

Weekend Update’s resident young person (Pete Davidson) shares his fears about the zombie apocalypse, mainly that he’ll be mistaken for a zombie. Norman Reedus makes a cameo! The skit is an excuse to make pot jokes, more or less.

Weekend Update: Jebidiah Atkinson Reviews Television Shows

Jebidiah Atkinson (Taran Killam) is not impressed with the new seasons of Mad Men and Game of Thrones and he’s not a fan of classic comedies like Seinfeld and I Love Lucy either.

Prom Queen

A popular student (Mike O’Brien) bets that whomever he brings to prom as his date will be named prom queen, even a teacher (Michael Keaton). I have no idea what’s going on here.

Easter Hotline

Sasheer Zamata as a sex hotline lady suggesting you all call your grandparents for Easter. Worth watching for the always great Kate McKinnon.

Smart Home

An inventor (Michael Keaton) and his wife (Cecily Strong) frighten their neighbors (Kate McKinnon, Kyle Mooney, Vanessa Bayer, Beck Bennett) when they start showing off their invasive “smart” products. THE EYEBALLS.

Ad Agency

The CEO of an ad agency (Michael Keaton) joins his staff’s (Cecily Strong, Kenan Thompson, Leslie Jones, Beck Bennett) brainstorming session and changes all of their ideas for the worse. Hm.
