Mariah Carey is set to guest on Season 2 of “Empire,” creator Lee Daniels told a crowd at the singer’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star dedication on Wednesday.
Every day there’s a new announcement regarding a new guest star. Yes, there is such a thing as TOO MUCH of a good thing. Famous guest stars are fun, but stuff a series full of them, and soon the plot is serving the stars, rather than the other way around. See: Glee. The beginning of Glee jumping the shark began with the parade of guest stars and episodes dedicated to music icons. Plots began to suffer.
I’m just hoping the Daniels and his fellow producers can keep focused on what made the show popular in the first place. Fun plots with crazy twists and lots and lots of drama. And don’t forget the good music! Guest stars are nice, but not really required!
Having said that, Daniels HAS worked with Mariah before, directing her in two movies, Precious and The Butler. It’s not odd that he would pull her into the world of Empire.
Add Mimi to the already long list of guest stars including include Marisa Tomei, as Mimi Whiteman, a billionaire venture capitalist who has a taste for fine ladies, and pop singer and former X Factor judge, Kelly Rowland, who will pop in as Lucious’ mom in flashbacks. The Wire‘s Andre Royo has been cast in the recurring role of Thirsty Rawlings, the unethical and shady lawyer who works with the imprisoned Lucious. Rapper, Ludacris, has been tapped to play what appears to be a law enforcement officer. Becky G. and Yani Marin have also been added. Chris Rock, Alicia Keys and Lenny Kravitz are also set to guest star.
Mariah got her star on the Walk of Fame Wednesday. Daniels, BET Programming President Stephen Hill and Epic Records Chairman and CEO L.A. Reid were also in attendance for the ceremony, which took place at The W Hotel.
