Living Room Concerts: Kerry Ellis Sings 'Your Song'

Taped post-AMAs, Bonnie asked Kris what he thought of Adam’s performance on the awards show (“That’s Adam, ” says Kris) and how he balances his young marriage with his equally young music career.

After, Kris and the band performed his single, “Live Like We’re Dying” from Kris’ self-titled post-Idol debut.

Update: Kris also performed a Christmas tune, that will appear on a later broadcast. Watch out for that!

  1. The only problem I have with this song is that once I hear it, I can’t get the Macerania out of my head. Hey! Macerania!

  2. A very sweet interview. He really does have an endless supply of cute and funny faces. I thought he handled the Adam/AMAs question well. And it always makes me happy to hear how supportive his wife is through all of this. I’m sure it’s not easy to be apart so much, but she seems really supportive of his career, which is great for him to have in his life.

  3. Yay! Another solid live performance by the band!Kris holding the last note!!Sounded so good!

LOL @ interview! “You’re confusing me now!!” & “You feel for him…?”
HIIlarious!!So funny! This guy is so calm and cool… ( I should really try and learn from him!).

  4. Very cute interview. I liked his responses to the Adam question. He has good comedic timing. :)

  5. Good grief move on to another song on your album Kris. This one is a bust.

The interview was cute and Kris is a cutie!

  6. Good interview. He’s really getting the hang of this stuff now and he is funny without trying too hard. That was a good response to the question about Adam’s AMA performance — don’t think I need to see Kris trying to repeat it at next year’s awards show though (LOL).

Plaid continues to invade his band — this time bass player Chris was rocking the plaid. I think Andrew (lead guitar) is the only one who hasn’t worn it yet.

  7. SparklesATL Well thanks alot!! I wasn’t a big fan of the song before… now you totally ruined if for me. The Macerania is now on repeat in my head ;)

I loved that Kris glance at the end. Way too funny.

  8. girlygirl Are you sure it just isn’t a few plaids that get moved from one band member to the next? ;) I’m kinda over the plaid thing.. between Kris, his band and Cook. *sigh*

  9. This kid is delightfully evil. Seems like Bonnie was trying to fish for some kind of negative response from him on Adam, and first he goes “oh, not shocked, it’s just Adam,” then he just hops on her leading “Would you…” with “Would I do that?” and grabs control of the direction of the interview from her. Anyone at all thinks she was trying to ask anything even close to what he suggested? :)

  10. smellycat

LLWD is not a bust — it is a Top 20 Hot AC and Top 40 pop hit.

Anyway, he also perfomed a Christmas song, and they tweeted that that performance will be shown on a future episode of the show.

  11. LMAO Love the interviews Kris has been doing lately. It’s like he’s finally relaxed enough to let people see him. If he’d been like this during idol and the summer tour, he could have had amazing press coverage. I don’t know what media training program they put him through, but it was obviously top notch.

  12. Love love love Kris!!! He just keeps getting stronger in these interview situations. And I LOVE LLWD. Its a hard one to perform live but he does an amazing job of it.

  13. I can’t get the Macerania out of my head. Hey! Macerania!

    Macarena.

  14. I think he just said that for fun. Kris will never try to be what he’s not, never.
Kris, you are the real deal and your time will come, just be yourself as always. This performance was really really good and I’m sure by the time he starts touring, they will be amazing!

  15. This was a fabulous, funny, witty interview. Kris definitely seemed to kind of take control – loved the conversation about marriage at the end where he’s all like, now you’re confusing me.

And anyone else notice he’s wearing the Don’t Stop the music shirt from AI under that jacket?

  16. Good grief move on to another song on your album Kris. This one is a bust.

LOL. I’m sure a lot of artists would like to have such a bust! #19 on HAC, #33 on Pop, and still moving up on both charts! #41 on Billboard Hot 100 of songs on all formats (sales and airplay combined).

He’s going to keep performing the single that is out on the radio, and doing well, to help it continue to do well, just as he should.

And, yes, I also noticed the “Don’t Stop the Music” t-shirt on underneath the jacket! I love that shirt!

  17. This was a nice interview and I think he’s just getting more comfortable doing them. I like LLWD but would like to hear something else on these shows.

  18. Please dude. Don’t do an Adam, stick with doing your music instead and not cheap antics.

I haven’t bought Kris’s album… I might if I heard a different song televised. I don’t care for LLWD too much. Won’t buy an album if that is mostly what is on it.

  19. Another great interview! Yes, he just keeps getting more and more comfortable doing them. I think part of the reason is that he’s more relaxed in his life right now. You know, all the stress of touring, wife-separation, writing, recording, album stuff is over, so it’s like a big exhale and he can just be his charming devilish self now. You can really see it in his face. Very nice. Of course, was I the only one who was screaming at the tv when yet another Adam question came up (and NO album questions were asked)? But he handled it well, so all’s good. Happy to hear that we’ll see/hear a Christmas performance later, too.

On a shallow note, Kris looked purdy! :-)

  20. Great charisma and comic timing. Love how he grabbed control of that Adam conversation. It’s no Krim Show, but he was able to make the interview charming, fun, and a little less cookie cutter (for those of us who’ve seen a bazillion of the things).

  21. I haven’t bought Kris’s album’ ¦ I might if I heard a different song televised. I don’t care for LLWD too much. Won’t buy an album if that is mostly what is on it.

Try YouTube. Pretty much all the songs on the album can be found there. Kris is going to continue to sing LLWD because that is the single that is on the radio. That’s what artists do. When he has the opportunity to perform more than one song, he will do other songs from the album (as he did at the Dolphins tailgate and on GMA).

  22. “I haven’t bought Kris’s album’ ¦ I might if I heard a different song televised. I don’t care for LLWD too much. Won’t buy an album if that is mostly what is on it”

Koshka, Kris’ album has an eclectic group of songs. Most of them sound nothing like LLWD…. anyways, no worries, wait a month or two for Kris’ next single . You can buy his album then, no rush.

I’m not invested enough to look for the vid – I confess. Plus, I find that the live performances much better in getting me interested. I heard all the album cuts, but it didn’t strike a cord, which doesn’t mean that it won’t later.

I realize the strategy behind the one song thing. I guess when you just don’t like the ‘one’ song, you are looking to hear something else. I missed his GMA performance.

  24. Kris is going to continue to sing LLWD because that is the single that is on the radio. That’s what artists do. When he has the opportunity to perform more than one song, he will do other songs from the album (as he did at the Dolphins tailgate and on GMA).

Seems like a no-brainer to me. Artists have singles, they go on TV to promote them. They get to sing one song, which song would that be?
I’m surprised this wouldn’t be understood.

  25. Speaking of Kris’s album, from Associated Content:

American Idol Season 8 winner Kris Allen released his self-titled debut album on November 17. In a week when established megastars like John Mayer (whose album, “Battle Studies,” debuted in the No. 1 position), 50 Cent, Leona Lewis, Paul McCartney, Casting Crowns, and Norah Jones also released albums, the American Idol Season 8 winner did well to bow in at #11. In fact, he debuted higher than Leona Lewis (#13) and Paul McCartney (#16).

Six days after Kris Allen dropped his first major label album, Adam Lambert’s much anticipated major label release, “For Your Entertainment,” hit the stores. It is expected to debut high, but at present lags behind the musical phenomenon that is Susan Boyle, another competition reality show runner-up who released her debut album, “I Dreamed A Dream,” the same day.

Kris did better than Paul mCCartney! Wow!

I can’t wait to watch this interview…gotta do it at home though. =(

And, yeah, as for LLWD, I remember when we got sick of Cook’s Light On last year, but they have to promote the current single. Can’t wait for a new single though!!!

  26. koshka, Kris has a bunch of live performances coming up and I’m sure there will be video from all the Jingle Balls and hopefully from the AOL sessions. Perhaps you can check them out and decide if you’d like to buy the album? I bought it and love it. Trust me that there are many other songs that are better than LLWD (altho I do like that song, just don’t luv it)!

  27. What a cute, funny and sweet interview! Kris sure is getting comfortable with interviews and singing LLWD now. Anyone else notice the nice stage they setup for the song with the clock gears or hardwares? Can’t wait to see his christmas tune performance!

Also, I did notice his Don’t Stop the Music shirt under the nice gray jacket!!

  28. That was a good interview:) LLWD isn’t my favorite song from his album but I can understand why that is the one he is singing – since it is his current single.

  29. Kris got marriage advice from “someone” he worked with – Two weeks cut off…. It’s gotta be Chris Daughtry!!

What an awkward, hilarious pause at the end of the interview. Cracked me up!!!

Long live LLWD – this single’s got lotsa spins left in it!

  30. I think we’ll hear LLWD performed on these appearance for many weeks to come, judging by how it keeps moving up in spins and on the charts.

Keith Urban performed “Kiss A Girl” on the AMA’s last week, after performing it on the Idol finale with Kris back in May, so artists continue to play the songs that are still spinning on the radio. I would have liked to hear Keith sing something new, but that’s the way these things go.

  31. Good interview. He’s really loosening up on interviews. Good answers on Adam’s stuff. Cute ending.
Good performance also; I think Chris Torres is backing up more on the chorus than before

  32. I heard LLWD played at Portland OR’s largest brewpub on Fri nite this Thanksgiving weekend. I don’t live in Portland but was in town for the weekend. It gave me a sense of pride and relief.

Kris’s interview with Bonnie reminded me of why I call him Stealth Idol. Snatched the interview re Adam right out from under her nose!

  33. What a cute, funny and sweet interview! Kris sure is getting comfortable with interviews and singing LLWD now. Anyone else notice the nice stage they setup for the song with the clock gears or hardwares? Can’t wait to see his christmas tune performance!

Kris is a funny guy. That just needs to come out a little more often…

  34. Too damb funny. That last look he gave her when they both picked up their cups is LOL hilarious. The ‘would I do that?’ was perfect. He took charge of that line of questioning.

I also wish he could sing more than one song from his album on these shows, but I’m thankful he’s getting the exposure. Would love if they’d talk more about the album.

  35. Yay Kris! You seemed in good spirits and had a friendly rapport with Bonnie.

I guess Bonnie “had” to ask Kris about the AMA fiasco in her show’s interview but I wish when Kris is interviewed, it focused on him and not that other guy. It happened after the Idol show and it’s happening right now while Kris is trying to promote his own debut album.

  36. I think Bonnie could have come up with better questions. I didn’t really glean anything new or insightful from this interview, except perhaps for the word of advice given to Kris about relationships by one of the people he was working with (Chris Daughtry? Haha :D). I thought it was funny when Kris said Bonnie was confusing him with the whole team-individual-marriage series of questions.

Well, it’s a given that Kris will get asked a question pertaining to Adam. That, apparently, is just the way it is. Maybe there was a clause he signed in his contract with 19 that he must answer an Adam Lambert-related question in any interview.

Oh, and I love that jacket he had on. It’s the same one from the “Live Like We’re Dying” video :)

Thought the set was also neat in keeping with the whole time-is-running-out thing. The performance was good, but the lead guitarist Andrew – he was playing a higher key (chord? eh I dunno) than normal, which threw me off a bit. The bassist, Chris Torres, did a good job with the back up vocals. And woohoo! Nice close-ups of Cale at the keyboard!

  37. Loved this! I recorded it, but haven’t seen it yet on my TV. I know it will look/sound even better on TV vs my computer. Kris looked and sounded really relaxed with Bonnie. Kudos to Kris and company!

  38. The song he was practicing in the hallway must of been a Christmas song. Someone mentioned that they taped a Christmas song to be shown later.

Great interview. Never heard about how they cut in line at the auditions before.

  39. @sunny2: I heard a different version of the auditions story. I can’t remember where I read it, but the part about them showing up late was mentioned. I think it was that they showed up and they were the past few people in line and the admissions people were starting to turn people away. Kris, Daniel and Cale had guitars with them and they gave the admissions people some line about how the guitars would get messed up if they were staying out in the sun for long, and so they were let in :D

  40. Here is the audition story as it’s told by Cale: http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1610589/20090504/story.jhtml and by Kris (from the LATimes ultimate interview): “The line was forever long but my brother is the biggest con artist in the world. He went up to one of the security guards and said, ‘Dude, we have these guitars out here. They can’t be out in the heat.’ It was blazing hot outside but the security guard said, ‘No, dude. We can’t do it.’ And Daniel kept trying to convince him and so he ended up letting us cut in line and we went in the arena a lot sooner than we should have. But that was no big deal because we were some of the very last ones to sing. We waited for 14 hours”.

So, I guess we have to thank Daniel for his intention to audition in the first place and for his skills as a con-artist!! Actually Kris himself includes him in his “Thanks” on the CD but says also that he was the reason they were late for the audition, lol.

I loved this interview and I’m really happy his cool personality starts to shine and in interviews shown on TV, because the Krim and the Krezak show are only for the internet fans.
Good performance of LLWD. I’m excited that it’s slowly but steadily climbing the charts and I understand why they keep performing it everywhere. I just hope sometime soon (and not until the 3rd single, (if/when) comes out) the non-fans get to see and hear on TV a version of one of his ballads/ slower songs: BIB, LIR, INTK where he uses his lower register a lot and where he can express his emotions better. As for the fans I guess we will hear one of them in one of the upcoming Jingle Balls (12/1 Sacramento, 12/4 Chicago (esp. in this one which I think is acoustic) etc, right , Kris? So, except from the Christmas songs, which I would love to hear you sing, give us and some new stuff, please, good luck.

  41. [jms] “LMAO Love the interviews Kris has been doing lately. It’s like he’s finally relaxed enough to let people see him. If he’d been like this during idol and the summer tour, he could have had amazing press coverage. I don’t know what media training program they put him through, but it was obviously top notch.”

I feel Kris seeming more “confident” now in interviews has a lot to do with the fact that he is free to speak about everything now, whereas on Idol & the tour he was restricted in what he could say & so tried to choose his words carefully so he wouldn’t give anything away!! [ Must have been frustrating for him!!]
He himself seems like he is enjoying interviews much more now & that shows!! in this interview he actually took control for a while using his dry sense of humour about the AMA’s . We all know he would never put on a show like Adam did at the AMA’s but Kris played on this & just the thought made it funny!!
The performance was great – the band is really coming together !! They really need to keep playing LLWD whilst it is still climbing the charts but when the opportunities arise to sing more songs they will!! [ Look forward to hearing the Christmas song!!]

  42. I’m not invested enough to look for the vid ‘“ I confess.

Well I would recommend the live version of his Can’t Stay Away. I liked it a lot at the Dolphins pre-show thing. I didn’t like it as much on the album, but live I recommend listening to it.

And yeah, I hear ya on LLWD. I don’t like it, haven’t from the beginning and it’s only gotten worse with repeated listenings. Which are my fault as I kept being stubborn and trying to like even a live version of it. But I think there are other songs that are better on the album, or at least want to see live and away from some of the overproduction I feel mars some of Kris’s album.

Anyhew, cute interview. I’ve loved Bonnie for many years now, so seeing them together was great. They have the same sort of vibe, that wry humor, but being/seeming to be nice people. Glad that Kris felt comfortable with Bonnie to let that side of him out. A nice relief from those treacly USA Today and People things.

  43. Kris got marriage advice from ‘someone’ he worked with ‘“ Two weeks cut off’ ¦. It’s gotta be Chris Daughtry!!

That was my thought too – I think most people think that Kris got some good advice from Daughtry regarding marriage and career. Chris Daughtry was admittedly not my favorite on his season but he has shown himslef to be a smart, real and nice guy recently and the fact that he’s seemed to take Kris under his wing to such a large extent (especially since they have the same managers) makes me like him so much more.

  44. I don’t think those expressive eyes can get anymore presh! And love that shirt – my favorite from the season. My only negative is that the band maybe needs to look a little more perky. Sounded great tho. Kris is really getting comfy with that song and the interviewing process. Well done Kris.

  45. I’m not 100% sold on Kris’s back-up band yet. But, he looked and sounded fab. To me, he just comes across really likable during these interviews.

  46. Once again here I am watching Kris in an interview with a silly grin spreading from ear to ear. He’s just cute and so funny! The best thing, to me, is that I don’t think he’s trying to be anything other than what he is in everyday life and it’s just so darn likable!

I thought it was so sweet that BH brought up what his dad was thinking about all of this and just how proud he must be!

I thought they sounded good once again on LLWD, and I still have not grown tired of that song whatsoever.

Also, on the marriage thing I sometimes wonder if Kris is just thinking, this is all I know in my marriage. This hasn’t changed anything because this is what we’ve always had since the beginning.

“Look ‘“ Kris is hanging with President Obama!

    KrisAllen
Look who decided to come to practice and hang’ ¦’ ¦. http://twitpic.com/rnml3 19 minutes ago from Echofon”

It’s good to be a Kris’ follower on twitter. He is just too funny! Plus he doesn’t over tweet at all though there’re times I wish he will tweet a little more…

  48. Can anyone make out what Kris said in response to her first question about “the Adam Lambert performance” – she interrupted what he was saying with “I feel for him”? (I hate when a host asks a question and then doesn’t let the person answer) I’d like to know what he started to say…

I am not surprised she asked Kris about this (her knickers were in quite the twist about it a week ago – she seems to have rethought her position) being that Kris knows Adam and Kris was in the audience.

  49. I love Kris. He’s great. And I love my Kris Allen CD.

Can anyone make out what Kris said in response to her first question about ‘the Adam Lambert performance’ ‘“ she interrupted what he was saying with ‘I feel for him’ ? (I hate when a host asks a question and then doesn’t let the person answer) I’d like to know what he started to say’ ¦

He just said “Adam’s performance”–repeating her. It just wasn’t a big deal to Kris.

  50. A little bit OT:

Does anybody know when the Parade magazine with Kris Allen is going to be ? He is not on this past weekend edition.

  51. Starr

@sunny2: I heard a different version of the auditions story. I can’t remember where I read it, but the part about them showing up late was mentioned. Starr, it was a four part interview from Los Angeles Times online. Part I – Aug 17’09, part II Aug 19, part III Aug 20, Part IV Aug 21.

It was a great interview. Maybe you can search it and make a link.
I would have done it , but I don’t know how to do it. Sorry.

I love the part II interview where it shows how his expectation of going to Idol is not that high at all and yet he won the whole thing.

  52. It’s good to be a Kris’ follower on twitter. He is just too funny! Plus he doesn’t over tweet at all though there’re times I wish he will tweet a little more’ ¦

I’ve become a Kris fan just from following his twitter. He’s got the greatest sense of humor.

I really like his album & am enjoying his interviews. He’s just so damn cute.

  53. Does anybody know when the Parade magazine with Kris Allen is going to be ? He is not on this past weekend edition.

If you mean USA Weekend (similar to Parade), it was this past weekend. Kris looked good on the cover. There was a small article inside, about half a page, with another pic.

  54. phdrmom
“I’ve become a Kris fan just from following his twitter. He’s got the greatest sense of humor.

I really like his album & am enjoying his interviews. He’s just so damn cute.”

WOW that’s refreshing to know! A lot of time I see the non-fans just keeps saying how boring he or his music is. Problem with those people is that they just don’t get him.

And Btw, I’ve joined twitter just to follow Kris otherwise I won’t have never joint.

  55. I’m a long time Clay fan. I haven’t actually watched the show in a couple of years but I’ve always stayed up on all the artists year after year.

I got caught up with following some of the AI 8 singers’ Twitter accounts during the AI Tour though I had not heard any of them sing. I watched youtube videos from the AI tour of several of the idols & I really liked what I saw of Kris. Then he started really showing his personality on his Twitter so I started paying more attention.

I listened to his album when it streamed online & I liked it. The more I listened to it the more I like it. The only song on the album I don’t like is the new version of Heartless. Personally I think the producer screwed that up completely. They should have let him record the acoustic version he did on AI. (Yes, I did find a copy of it after I read about it.)

Kris is the only other artist from AI besides Clay that I’ve actually bought his album at both iTunes & Walmart simply because I wanted the bonus songs.

I think Kris will do well with Radio & will grow his fanbase through lots of touring. I’m looking forward to seeing him perform his own music live.

  56. @ross:
“If you mean USA Weekend (similar to Parade), it was this past weekend. Kris looked good on the cover. There was a small article inside, about half a page, with another pic.”

I know it is too late now, but where does the USA Weekend come with ? What newspaper ? Is it regional ?

  57. Ratna12,
here is what I found on USA Weekend Magazine’s site: Our newspaper partners and links to their Web sites.USA WEEKEND Magazine reaches 47.5 million readers through 600 newspaper partners. Here are the forward-looking publications that distribute 23.3 million copies of our magazine each week. Newspapers by state: http://www.usaweekend.com/partners/partner_links/index.html

    I hope this is helpful.

  58. I just found out on twitter which Christmas song Kris performed on the show:
“He sang “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)” It was great! He totally got into it and rocked it out. 1:38 AM Nov 25th ”

I can’t wait to hear it “allenized”!

  59. @phdrmom: Yay! Welcome to the club! Haha :D It really is nearly impossible to not love Kris when he tweets the most adorkable things!

  60. Kris was so funny in this interview and I love how he took control of parts of the interview. I am also enjoying his CD. I think I listened to it completely about 5 times at work yesterday. I can’t wait to hear his version of the Christmas Song and see what else he comes up with on the Jingle Ball Tours he is about ready to start.

I also like his random tweets. It is funny to see them on the front page of KAO.

  61. I never got around to this past Sunday’s papers (I subscribe to 2) and I’m glad I stopped by this thread. Just rummaged through and found USAWeekend in the LA Daily News.

The full page pic of Kris on the cover is drop dead gorgeous. He’s wearing a very flattering dark green long sleeve shirt cuffed up and his ‘sexy face’. It’s a shame that the article doesn’t mention his album is in stores now.

  62. Um, TwigLA, a scan would be MUCH appreciated!

Internet is always your friend, at least mine since I don’t live in the USA:

Kris performs today at the JingleBall concert in Sacramento and apparently he is rehearsing:
Gigatone:Kris Allen is here rehearsing and I’m reaching for Eric Carmen “Tonight You’re Mine” (Arista, 1980). Killer Track = “It Hurts Too Much”.

  63. phdrmom, Welcome to Kris’ Fan club and thanks for your background story!! :)

‘He sang ‘The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)’ It was great! He totally got into it and rocked it out. 1:38 AM Nov 25th ‘

    Cool and I can’t wait!!!

  65. Thanks everybody for the USA Weekend info.

Oh well, I missed this one , but I’m trying to be positive and I’m sure that Kris will have a long career. I’ll catch him in other magazines.

I can’t wait for the videos of the Jinggleball Sacramento to turn up.

  66. Will the Jinggleball Sacramento be shown on TV? If yes, which channel?

  67. Internet is always your friend, at least mine since I don’t live in the USA:

Hey thanks for this link!! I entered to win the guitar! :D

I’ll bet the Christmas song is beautiful! IIRC it goes down into that lower register. I wonder if this is what he sings at the Disney Christmas parade.

I’m looking forward to this vid and many other from the Jingle Balls!

I too add my welcome tophdrmom . :D
