Amid the excitement of announcing that she was “totally pregnant” at her Piece by Piece concert at the Staples Center Wednesday night, Kelly Clarkson sent a special birthday shoutout to fellow pop star, Demi Lovato, who celebrated her 23rd birthday on Thursday.
“It’s one of my girls’ birthday tomorrow,” explained Kelly. “And when I say girl, I mean Demi Lovato!” Kelly added, “She’s always been such a fan, she’s so supportive and so cool… she’s just killing it. I thought I would, for her birthday, sing her new single, ’Cool For The Summer.’”
Kelly lent her signature soulful style, to the cool pop hit, slowing the tempo, and turning the song into an intoxicating ballad.
The next day, Demi was ecstatic. She gushed on her Instagram:
“If someone would’ve told me when I when I was little that one day @kellyclarkson would one day cover one of MY songs at HER concert for MY BIRTHDAY, I would call you crazy and never believe you again,” Demi wrote, “Well last night THE QUEEN DID and she has no idea what it means to me. Honestly the coolest Bday gift EVER!!!!!! Thank you Kelly!!!!! Love you tons and tons and congrats on baby #2!!!!!!!”
Kelly explained her Demi love to MTV, “We almost got to work together, but I was pregnant and she had asked me to sing. I totally was down, but it just didn’t work out,” Kelly said. “She was touring, I was super pregnant and not feeling well and it didn’t work out this time, but it totally will. … I love her; she’s so sweet. Every time we see each other, she’s always like, ’Kelly Clarkson, she’s so nice, and so awesome, we’re both Texans.’”
