Katy Perry anticipates an emotional goodbye as judges American Idol one last time
The American Idol 2024 finale airs Sunday (May 19) and while the show is all about crowing a winner. it will also be the last time Katy Perry sits on the judges panel.
What will the show do to mark her exit? The judges spoke with ABC news about the pop star leaving American Idol after seven seasons.
“To see her leave is going to be frightening and sad, but at the same time … hang on to your seat! She has a roar, about herself, no pun intended,” said Lionel Richie.
“It’ll be emotional,” said Luke Bryan. “Katy and Lionel and I have developed a close friendship. It will be an emotional night.”
“There will be a moment,” said host Ryan Seacrest. “She’s going to take the stage. It will be especially significant being her last performance.”
“It’s been a fantastic seven years with her, so sad to see her go,” Ryan told Entertainment Tonight at the ABC Upfront presentation earlier this week. “We all know each other very, very well. The judges have such an amazing chemistry but the show, through its existence, has always evolved into the next chapter and we’re gonna do it again.”

“I think I will be crying at anything,” said Katy. ‘It’s been a beautiful journey and I love watching these kids grow and becoming this big beautiful patchwork quilt.” The singer is leaving American Idol to focus on her music and career, including KP6, her rumored upcoming album.
The show has not announced her celebrity replacement.
The three-hour American Idol finale airs on ABC Sunday May 19 at 8 pm EDT. The show will broadcast live coast to coast. The Top 3–Abi Carter, Jack Blocker and Will Moseley–will perform one last time for the crown. Iconic rocker Jon Bon Jovi will mentor the singers and perform. At the end of the night, American Idol will crown the show’s newest winner.
