Katharine McPhee on Meeting Her Musical Icon Celine Dion

Catching Up With Uché on His Idol Time – “I think a lot of people think with these shows that we’re kind of forced to do stuff or the producers have their agenda and honestly I feel so blessed to be on this show at this time because I’ve had so much freedom to do the music that I wanted to do, that I’ve asked to do. They’ve just been there to help us bring that to life as much as they can. They give us the resources to make sure that whatever song we choose to do it’s the best it can be to give us the best chance in the competition. – HoustonPress

Here’s The Performance That Got Lauren Daigle Kicked Off American Idol – Yesterday in Studio C, Lauren Daigle revealed that during her time on American Idol, she felt SO awkward when she had to squeeze into a glittery dress, put on glittery stilettos and sing “Baby Love”. She claims that she went to her mom and said “I hope I get eliminated”. Sure enough for her, she was eliminated following this song. – Read more at Cities97.1

‘We Clearly Have A Problem’: Study Highlights Shortage Of Female Country Artists & Songwriters – Key takeaways include female artists (including solo artists and members of duos and bands) accounting for just 16 percent of the top 500 country songs from 2014-2018 – roughly equivalent to 5 male artists for every 1 female. When it comes to age, the study found that all of the top-performing women were under 40 years old, with Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert the oldest at 35. In contrast 7 of the top 8 males, Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Eric Church, Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney and Dierks Bentley were all aged 40 or over. The sole exception was 29 year-old Thomas Rhett. The average mean age across the country charts for the survey period was 37 for males and 34 for females. – Read more at Billboard.com

  1. That was a great interview with Uché, I did not know he hailed from Houston – but it told me so much about his attitude to continually learn from experiences and improve his skillsets…the kind of backstory that I am really interested to hear about:

”Well, you know I’m in that wedding band, Drywater,” he says of his main gig, though he has performed solo sets at Warehouse Live and at last year’s Madness on Main music festival. “I’ve probably played all the country clubs in Houston and the surrounding areas, all the super-nice hotels, Hotel ZaZa, the new Marriott downtown. Literally every weekend I’m probably at one of those venues doing something. At least in the past.”

  4. That Lauren Daigle performance must have been at HW group round, but that seemed far too elaborate. Where would they have gotten matching costumes?

    What year was that?

  5. Nobody wore matching outfits at this year’s HW group rounds and that was televised.

  6. Hmm.

I don’t remember group performances that far into the process. (Other than the pimp-mercials the finalists did)

    I stand corrected.

  7. 2012 Vegas round (after Hollywood). I remember contestants such as Colton Dixon, Phillip Phillips, etc. all coordinated in outfits. The theme that year was 60s for Vegas so maybe they were thinking coordinating outfits for groups was normal.

  8. That’s terrific news. I’m hoping they will give it a longer season but glad to have it back no matter what.

  9. Yes, more competition rounds would be the only reason for wanting a longer season….enough already with the auditions and artificial gauntlet episodes…but that IF has to do double duty..IF the spoiler site is correct, and IF Idol PTB was seeding for next year in some of these unexplained eliminations, I already know two hopefuls I would like to see back next year…Jackson Gillies and Tiffane LeMay…YMMV.

  10. Hope you get to talk w/him/them a little. I’m sure it won’t be as easy to get to him as it was before QR, but that’s a good thing if it’s crowded. Have fun!

  11. I’d guess that one major change will be different judges. They may keep Lionel but replace Katy and Luke.

  12. Yes, BillBoard…’We Clearly Have A Problem’, where have you been? Not reading your own numbers? That story has not measurably improved in the last five years, and this 2014 post by our own late Deb B, AKA Windmills, (along with the comments) has a statistical back up showing the systemic shutting down of the “tomatoes”. The blog has been reporting this for quite some time. The moves to fix this have so far not been impressive. IMO. And I am not even a country listener…but the imbalance is blatant.

Folks to whom this is news…check it out?

  13. Lots of positive energy in that interview! Too often, we read/hear contestants complain about the Idol experience in progress: “I’m so tired, this is really hard….”

  14. According to The Idol Spoilers site, Idol will be getting renewed (They spoiled it getting renewed last year also).

    http://www.theidolpad.com/2019/04/tip-exclusive-american-idol-season-18.htm

Its not surprising. Remember when it was initially canceled in 2015, it was falling OUT of the top 25 shows in the demo. Ratings have changed in four years where now you are lucky to get above a 1.0 in the demo. Getting below a 1.0 still gets you in the top 25 shows these days. I think they have adjusted expectations accordingly.

  15. It also says to “expect major changes”. I would interpret that to be cost cutting, scaling back of some kind. The show is very expensive to produce.

  16. I want to see at least one music concert this year. So hopefully all goes well! :)

  17. I really like his attitude of not playing it safe and just going for it. It is a great opportunity and platform for him. I wish they would allow the public to vote in maybe 9 then let a few others compete for a wildcard position. Let the judges pick for the final position. My fear is those not voted in with the top 6 will look less than. Some may even have the votes to make it, but being placed in by the judges will make some question if they belong or if they took a spot from a favorite. I sure hope Uche gets in with the votes. But I think the judges will pick him if he does not.

  18. I did get to talk with James and Alex briefly. They both signed my Road Rage CD.
Alex is surprising taller than I thought in person. Always standing next to James in pictures will do that. lol. James actually seemed taller than I remember, and boy let me tell you, that voice in person is soooo much better than I remember. Probably because the last 2 times I’ve seen him live have been at acoustic shows. This was full on, full band, hard rock and it was incredible how he sounded live. Wow!
All I can say is I would hate to be the bands following them this summer at some of these festivals they have coming up. Especialy the ones with older lead singers unable to sing like that anymore. He blows them all off the stage.
    Terrific show. Very cool venue.

  19. The problem is not only with country music. It is a puzzle that the music industry is not more open to all kinds of artists, with the few exceptions. Women in country. Indie artists. LGBT artists. Rock artists. A lot of good music and artists are not getting much or any radio support. Tho, it is very strange that some of the most successful women country artists (award winners and known outside of county with lucrative careers) have a hard time reaching #1 or top 10. But some of these guys, that outside people have hardly heard of, rotate right into a #1 country hit with little problem. I don’t expect to see any changes as that is how the corporations running things want them done.

  20. The Final Curtain on Six years of Kinky Boots on Broadway today has nostalgia/goodbye/HappyTrails posts proliferating on IG and Twitter…? especially from the Playbill account! With four people (Kirstin Maldonado-The Sing-off/David Cook, Todrick Hall-OG Idol/Mark Ballas-DWTS) from shows this blog covers involved with this production over its run, taking notice of the closing in a Headlines post seemed reasonable.

(Todrick is there to be watching in the Alumni section, also word of Kristin, and rumor is that David C was also spotted…no confirmation yet)

  21. Message from David C on Instagram

    davidcookofficial
I took this photo after I had auditioned in November of 2017 for @kinkybootsbway, convinced I had dropped the ball on the audition, and this was as close as I’d get to the show. Little did I know what was on the other side of this picture. From walking into my first day of rehearsal, scared shitless and convinced I was about to show just how much I was in over my head, to being in tears when it was time to leave Price & Son, I cannot thank this show enough for the opportunity to help tell this story and share its message. Happy Closing to my factory family at @kinkybootsbway!

Sweet. Reminds me of an older interview where David was asked how he was so fearless…he said he gets just as scared as anyone else about trying things, but he never lets fear stop him from doing something he wants to do! ?

  22. Yay!! An Australian stadium tour for Queen and Adam.

    https://brianmay.com/queen/queennews/queennewsapr19a.html#13
The soaring success of the film Bohemian Rhapsody, the highest grossing music biopic of all time, has proven that the love for Queen remains as strong as ever. Lifelong Australian fans and new converts will be thrilled with the news that Queen original band members Brian May and Roger Taylor are teaming up once more with longtime frontman Adam Lambert on lead vocals and returning to Australia in February 2020 for 6 giant stadium shows with a brand-new, spectacular production.

Thursday 13 February – BRISBANE – Suncorp Stadium
Saturday 15 February – SYDNEY – ANZ Stadium
Wednesday 19 February – MELBOURNE – AAMI Park
Sunday 23 February – PERTH – Optus Stadium
Wednesday 26 February – ADELAIDE- Adelaide Oval
Saturday 29 February – GOLD COAST – Metricon Stadium

Since Adam Lambert first shared the stage with Queen for the 2009 American Idol final, his dynamic performances have reinvigorated the band and delighted fans worldwide. Since then May and Taylor’s musical fireworks have been matched by Lambert’s vocal prowess and stage presence, making for an explosive combination. Over 180 gigs later, the partnership has proven a commercial and critical triumph, playing to enraptured full houses in every corner of the world.

The Australia dates are expected to be part of a wider tour of the region taking in also several East Asia dates.

  23. They are big venues!!!!!

    Suncorp stadium Brisbane: 52,500
    Anz stadium Sydney: 83,500
    Aami Park Melbourne: 30,050
    Optus stadium Perth: 60,000
    Adelaide Oval: 53,500
    Metricon stadium Gold Coast: 25,000

although I expect they can do smaller configurations too…

  24. They have done stadium size concerts just with QAL before. 30+Poland and Moscow. 45K Korea. 58K Tel Aviv. 75K Estonia etc. I think Barcelona was also really big. And of course several multi-act festivals of 60k to 90K in Brazil, Portugal, UK etc. But they were not all in one place like Australia, so I guess they could config. smaller and expand if needed. Tho, generally they have had several concerts in the same cities in Australia but this time there is only one per city, so maybe it will even out. Very exciting!
