Is Mia Michaels Quitting So You Think You Can Dance?

Ruh Rho. It looks like Mia Michaels is joining that twitter quitter Paula Abdul. Her tweets are vague, but it appears she’s leaving So You Think You Can Dance:

Goodbye Mia? Wow, that’ll be a huge loss. She’s a very popular and talented choreographer, even if her judging is somewhat uneven.

  1. I’m not sure how to feel about it. Great choreographer, generally not particularly fond of her when she talks. . . It seems like an odd time to leave, and I’d imagine the contestants will be a little upset.

  2. Bet you there’s one hell of a back story! This smacks of really bad argument leading to sudden (and also possibly bad) decisions. I wish her well. She’s one helluva choreographer.

  3. I’ll really miss her. She infuriates me at times, but her work is fascinating and provocative. Would sure love to know the backstory on this!

  4. That last one sounds like she’s wants something different. Probably has the urge to build her own dance company. Must be hard to work so closely with the young talent, only to have them leave after a short time.

  5. I think it has to do with the fact she wasn’t given the third judgeing seat.

  6. Hmmm…. I wonder if she’s ill? She showed up in Canada with a shaved head last week. She had a fabulous piece for the Top 3 girls.

Personally, I like Mia’s choreo and judging. But I believe Stacey Tookey is just as good. I’m hoping Stacey does some pieces for the US show again.

  7. Mia leaving — won’t miss her a bit. Maybe someone other than a contemporary dancer can have a chance at winning this now. Soooooo tired of contemporary dance on this show.

  8. Thank goodness she wasn’t given the third judging seat, if that’s what she wanted. Would *so* much rather have Adam. (or several other people, actually). She’s done some great routines for the show, no doubt about it, but, just like there are millions of contemporary dancers in this world, there *are* other contemporary choreographers, too. Might as well give them a shot. Her dance vocabulary isn’t *that* much more interesting. And maybe with other choreographers we can get some music besides Celine!

I think she’s just kissed her national prominence goodbye with this move, though. Sounds kind of ill advised to me.

  9. Nooooo! Half the fun of SYTYCD is trying to figure out what the hell is going on in Mia’s head. As adorable and supportive as Shankers can be, his judging is usually worthless regurgitation and you never have the feeling that he is going to go off script. Damn, that would suck, but maybe creatively she’s burned out. When Wade left for awhile she pretty much had to carry the provocative water cooler convo type of choreo on her shoulders and they really did overuse her.

  10. I have enjoyed most of Mia’s routine’s and I hope illness is not part of her decision. Yes, I agree there is some kind of backstory. I know there are other contemporary choreographers out there who may have new ideas. I also enjoy when former Top 10 dancers return to choreograph dance routines or group numbers.

Ballroom dances still remain my favorites.

  12. Seems kind of funny that she’d leave in the midst of a season. She’s been there in Las Vegas judging the dancers and teaching them choreography … unless there was a fight, or illness, you’d think she’d finish out the season and just not return for future seasons. She also seemed to be very impressed with a lot of these dancers. You’d think she’d want to follow through and see how they did. Wonder what’s really going on?

  13. If illness is her reason for leaving, wouldn’t she quit like a normal person instead of doing it a la Paula, via Twitter?

  14. Wow. My DVR just breathed a sigh of relief. This show has become unwatchable to me unless I record it so I can skip completely through Mia’s segments. She is an obnoxious, self-rightous, pig. From season 1’s Allan Frias debacle to her treatment of Brandon last season – I’m surprised she’s lasted this long. The show will not suffer her loss.

  15. Oh, that will be a shame if she leaves. I mean, she was a guest judge, so she was only on every three or four episodes. At least she was intelligent in her critiques, if not always as unbiased as she could be (e.g., she was really tough on Mark S4 and on Jessica, and I thought this was unfair). But she made thoughtful comments. I wondered, b/c she was extra nice during her choreo session during Vegas week. I hope she just wants to move on and this is not health-related (or Nigel-related). And I hope she still choreographs, b/c her dances are typically my favorites (e.g., The Bench w/ Travis and Heidi).

  16. o no. what happened?. why is she leaving?. can’t be contract negotaitions / money issues can it?. she annoys me sometimes but I still like her on sytucd

  17. Well, it’s official on SYTYCDISM. Mia has resigned. She put forth an official statement (which, oddly, first appeared on Rickey’s’ site!). Too bad. :(
